Long should be glad of the opportunity to start next season as first choice. Not sure Wilder has given him that much encouragement and maybe wants his Npton keeper or a.n.other lad from L1/L2.
In Long's situation he will know Wilder has a view on him, if not first hand then through his Blades contacts. Everybody knows Long has his faults and maybe his whole career depends on how he matures from hereon in. All that's in the lap of the gods or at least in Long's head - can he develop his game to dominate the six yard box and even to the penalty spot for crosses? He's nowhere near as yet, but he's young.
Would you start a promotion season with Long in goal? 50/50 perhaps. Nobody, not even Long is totally sure, but he needs to improve this side of Xmas. That's why he's offered less on his wages.
Such as Adams will be taking nothing for granted on their next contracts, that's for sure, not without a big contribution now, not just on potential, if it's there at all.
I really like the idea - outlined above by 1danewhitehouse - of having a Tracey/Kelly situation (on a lesser level admittedly) on our hands, with two young keepers slugging it out to be number one.
But maybe there is disquiet in the camp about Wilder tampering with previously offered terms and reducing contract offers based on what he thinks players are worth? Maybe George has got the hump? If so, no point George dragging it out - he should just man up & say he's going.
Can't honestly see what's taking so long - he either wants to stay (despite the possible reduction in terms from what that nice Mister Adkins had on the table for him), or the offer's unacceptable to him and he wants to leave.
The last thing we need though is another "disaffected" player hanging around on the margins of the squad.
