i'm still stuck in that 1996 timewarp..was the magical summer i finally left school at 18, A-level revision was never gonna be happening with Euro 96 going on, celebrated my 18th birthday on the night England hammered Holland 4-1...life and football felt good then and riding the waves of Britpop euphoria :D

Twat.
I thought it was in GBC because I'd forgot we had some good players and at least one playing for England. Then I realized we were also crap then and I'm far older than you Roygbiv and my memory is far more likely to be mixed up with fantasy. You just wait Roy. You get even more depressed, laugh loudly at things you shouldn't and show great concern at things you should be laughing at. If your still kicking it just wait till your knee goes and everyone starts holding doors for you. Oh and by that time we still would have won fuck all and no players playing for England and it will be 70 years of hurt.
EDIT: I will now look at your article to see if I can raise a smile.

Good article but for me the 1990 World Cup was the pinnacle - only a kid in 1966 - and THIS is the best England song ever

That plus Nessun Dorma, still get the tingle up the spine.

Italia 90 got me into football but I was a little too young to really know what was happening.Agree with both those songs being better than 3 lions too. I wrote the article simply to try and cash in on the 20th anniversary of Euro 96

I know, didnt mean to highjack it just made me think back to 1990. Was on a golf week for 96 watched the Holland game in a gay bar in Scotland and the Scotland game in a bar which was less friendly than the gay bar, unsurprisingly :)

No idea why some of the grammatical errors were left in. I'm the worst proof reader of my own work in history so was hoping they would iron out my flaws

Not a patch on Pesch's goal at 4:27. Paddy to PP, nine touches and in. Simply the best goal/game/atmosphere I've ever witnessed.
Canadian modal or European modal, Hmm I'll vote European;).

In the twinkle of an eye,30 years of hurt is now 50...
I was a mere 37 years old...where does the time go

Summer of 96, what a time. I was 5 and the only two things I cared about then were football and Oasis. I vividly remember watching England vs. Scotland at the old Wembley in my nannan and grandad's living room. Hard to believe it's been 20 years already.

Danish everywhere, that's all I really remember.

I think Euro 96 is probably my earliest memory of watching football on TV.

I vividly remember playing football in my neighbour's garden in the early evening when my mum and dad shouted over the wall for us to come in because Germany v England was starting.

I didn't really know what was going on and it was pretty late in the game when my dad informed my sister and I that we'd been cheering for the wrong team because England were playing in grey not white.

Little article I wrote reminiscing about the summer of 1996 and the European Championships. Hopefully some of you will find it slightly interesting

Lots of bunking off school that summer. Spent most of it round at my mate Chris' house watching the matches and rehearsing our band. We were shit but I did get to finger this bird called Amy who was quite nice. The Scotland match was class and against Holland was one of the few times in my life and England team has justified the hype.

I remember the night England lost to Germany very clearly. I went to my mate Wilko's house (another lad from the band) and there were a crowd of people there. Wilko had painted a big England flag on a bed sheet but had used orange paint instead of red. At the end of the match I went outside into Wilko's back yard and was smoking and chatting to some people when we heard a scream from inside. We looked back through the window to see that Wilko had set fire to his England flag in a fit of anger, but had done this while still in his living room and the thing had gone up like Roman Candle. He was spinning around in the middle of his living room holding this big burning flag. Some lads chucked a load of water at him and he was alright. It was a sight I'll always remember though.

Meanwhile, just up the road from there at the Old Pond in Cheshunt, a bunch of lads had left the Queen's Head pub and were in the streets singing to passing cars "Toot your horn if you love England". Most did, then some daft sod in a BMW didn't. He got booed as he drove past the crowd then stopped at a set of lights. These lads decided to exact some revenge on his car, went pelting after him, and stared smashing it up (the bloke legged it down a side road). Soon, the BMW was on fire and the cops were called. They had to storm the Queen's Head to get these lads out and the place was completely wrecked. There were still people I knew going through the courts with all that three years later.

Someone once told me that the three worst places for football violence during that tournament were Trafalgar Square, Enfield town centre, and the Old Pond at Cheshunt.

I had more fun the following summer. Did my GCSEs then pissed off to the west of Ireland.
