Enough to be able to marginally beat off competition from the rest of the division, and sign the best among leagues one and two. With the exception of any rare occasion a club offers silly wages we'd also have to be silly to compete with.

That way you're offering that bit more than the rest can, without being stupid with it.

We're the big club, that's how it should be.

OK. I'd like us to predominantly sign younger players from L1 (or L2/Conference if thought good enough), most of whom I'd expect to be under contract so we'd have to pay fees for them.

I'll accept a couple of older ones, particularly in central defence. Similarly, I wouldn't mind if they were dropping down if they still want to give everything and their legs aren't fucked.

All should be paid decent wages for this level but incentivised with promotion bonuses and win bonuses so that they only earn good money if they actually do the business for us.

Seems a pretty reasonable approach to take, especially bearing in mind the Hammond "sting" (on top of all the previous fiascos).

Cheaper players from a lower level, motivated to succeed rather than "has beens" & crocks motivated by the money - sounds very good to me. What many have been calling for for a long time now.

But I doubt folks will be that chuffed if we fuck about all summer long on wild goose chases after players who just won't bend to our wage constraints. Got to hope Wilder's got realistic targets lined up & that he can keep this momentum he's built up going.

I want just one thing. A lot...and I mean a lot...of attacking football. Don't want to be in a state of torpor on leaving the stadium. Do it cheap do it expensive but do it. Goals..and no bullshit interviews.

I didn't agree with either signing. To be fair though it's hard to judge what we're paying them. I've no doubts we won't be getting ripped off on the wages front. I do have doubts about whether we have gone to the other extreme, and whether that'll end up costing us better quality players.

At the time I didn't, no, but then not many will have. And to be fair that didn't stop anyone casting an opinion as to whether they were good signings or not. You can only go on the information you have.

This long overdue approach to player wages has to be praised, although I think it's mainly been driven by Wilder with the board merely belatedly learning from their incredible number of mistakes over a long period of time.

I think it will be obvious if we try and cheapskate our way through the summer too much. In which case questions will rightly be asked if we're short of quality and aren't getting the results.

But I don't think that'll be the case. We'll simply offer players what they're worth, Wilder seemed very straight on that, and I trust him to know what they're worth. This today with Tafazolli appears to be a very obvious case where the club can't be criticised for being cheap. You can't go paying players like him what he's reportedly on at Peterborough when we have so many other positions to strengthen and a few players on big wages limiting our room for manoeuvre.

I'd say it's more a case of "doing it cheaper" than "on the cheap". I'd also argue it's an attempt to do it sensibly.

You are missing the point I feel, your own point, which is not surprising really. You say we should sign the best players from this division and below. We do that and you still don't agree with them? Literally nobody can with with you can they? It's just one, long, massive "look at me" roadshow isn't it?

I think several clubs, such as Burton, have proved that you don't need to simply spend a fortune in order to succeed. On the same token, spending a fortune is no guarantee of success.
I was as pleased as anyone when we appointed Adkins, believing he had a good record and particularly at this level. For whatever reason, it became abundantly clear he was not the right man and now I'm cautiously optimistic about Wilder. He's certainly started on the right footing, but only once the season starts will we really know if he is the right man to get us promoted.

Coaxer - he will only be on the right footing if by Christmas we are five points clear at the top, having lost just two games against our promotion contenders in the half season, still in one or both cups and the team putting in some frankly brilliant performances.

Wilder looks very confident to me. There are a few vultures having to circle around at an unusual distance currently though, just waiting for the first signs of a stumble or a trip, or any sign of wekness. That's the price to pay at a 'big club'.

No justification for it before (how many matches did we miss which caused some sort of fixture pile up or player injuries/matches lost?) and none afterwards (we lost 8 games and drew 4 against winning 11 at home).

Yet people will still blame the shit we bought whilst missing the fucking obvious.
