A good article in Yorkshire Post. If anyone could down load it.
Very interesting.

'People are chucking CHs at us but they are wanting too much money'. Are we aiming too high again or are there some really greedy bastards out there who think they can take the piss out of us after recent times? Lets hope our negotiators have learnt from previous mistakes.

And still Adkins wouldn't have got it. Useless twat.
I thought Edgar and Baptiste were more than adequate signings for league one. If he could have cleared the shite then I think Adkins would've sorted the defence out but that ship has already sailed. Thankfully, for you and many others. :)

Edgar was shite and Baptiste was never going to stay beyond May.

Posted this on the Tafazolli thread, interesting interview...

SHEFFIELD UNITED manager Chris Wilder admits that bringing in some centre halves is ‘a massive priority’ – with the club’s current options being threadbare.

Wilder made his first raid on the transfer market this week, bringing in Burton winger Mark Duffy and Bury left-back Chris Hussey.

But now he is switching his focus to central defence, with Jay McEveley and Neill Collins having left their posts in recent times, leaving current options as minimal.

Wilder said: “It’s a massive priority.

We need players who, first of all, want to defend. We need players who want to get up the pitch as well if we want to press. It is important we have energy and athleticism in the two centre halves as well as being good defenders.

“We haven’t got a (senior) centre half in the football club at the moment.

“We have a young kid who will potentially be a ‘player’ for us from the academy in Callum Semple, but he’s possibly six months away.

“We need tough defenders who are going to stick their heads on the line and do what they need to do to keep the ball out of the net.”

Stressing that he would like to bring in full-time as opposed to loan options in the heart of defence if possible, he added: “We are getting players chucked at us who we cannot get over the line as they are asking for too much money.”

“It has to fit in with the financial aspect of it, but we are working hard, whether season-long loans or permanent. In an ideal world, I’d like permanents.

“But we will look and explore and ideally we’d like everyone back in the building before the 23rd when we start. But there might be a couple who are slow-burners.

“The centre-half position is one we definitely need to change pretty quickly.”

So he wants good defenders first and foremost with energy and athleticism so we can play a higher line.

He's spot on to want permanent signings in a position such as centre half.

And does that last comment mean we're starting our pre season on the 23rd, and that we want most our signings in by then? If so, then great, on both counts.

I'd also be intrigued to know who these players are who want too much money... wouldn't surprise me if one was Kilgallon, maybe Burn too.

I'd say the latter hits the nail on the head

Agents will be trying it on, we're a well known soft touch who pay shocking players big wages.

CH is a weird position for me.
I'd happily accept an older head who's not getting a game any more at a higher club but I'd also be happy with a season long loan of an exciting premiership youngster.
Basically anyone who could hit the ground running and be brilliant for one season rather than buy a player who's going to be OK for 3!

Burn like Hammond was chased and chased last season . Burn does not seem hungry enough to join us , and IMO is tard with the same brush , with the Hammond syndrome .

Kilgallon is past his sell buy date and I feel would not be fit , mental , hungry , focused enough to do a job both Wilder and fans expect .

We need leaders and neither of them players fit the bill . 2no important positions that have to be right first time , with no room for mistakes , manoeuvre , especially even more so if Long is stopping and will be in the net .

UTB

It wants a decent aged (24-27 ish) player with pace, ability and a fair bit of experience alongside a younger type (18-23) with a promising future. Tafazolli and Nelson would be ideal, but we'll probably end up with worse.

There's a lot of decent centre halves in leagues 1 and 2, it shouldn't be a problem now we have a competent manager in charge.

I'd like to see us take a punt in non league. Conference or below. I read an interview with Charlie Austin the other day and he said that its only ever the strikers who get a big chance to move up the leagues from non league, but there's a lot of defenders who are as good as most he's trained with in league football. Barnsley nailed it with Mark Roberts, if we were to sign 4, like we should, I would be happy with one of them being a non league lad with potential. Cheap, and very little risk but a lot to gain.

I think McFadzean and Tafazolli would be a good combination.

I would love Mcfadzean played non league worked his way up to championship level. Played consistently for them.

Tafazoulli has played 2 seasons in league two we can and will do much better.

Like Harry?

Maguire will be leaving Hull, but it won't be on loan and it won't be to League One. A lot of clubs will be interested in him.
I agree.
Although, is a player who was constantly sub for a 4th place championship side that much above dropping to a league 1 (future)champions team?

Big praise for young Callum Semple.

What a fantastic chance to bring in 2 or 3 proper centre backs to not only push the first team on but to genuinely show a young lad what it's all about to play first team football.

My only worry is can we attract 3 new centre backs? Any new signing in that position will demand a starting place each week ....

Looks like the lad Callum is replacing MCgaey in the young c back berth ... I would imagine with a huge saving on salary to boot.

I would go for Greer, taziolli

Based on his comments about energy and athleticism it wouldn't surprise me if Wilder tries to sign Aaron Pierre, especially if we don't sign Tafazolli as he's also left footed.

I am genuinely excited about how the squad will take shape......
Greer for me gives out and out experience. Even for one season. That is important for me.

There's a question mark I guess on where Wilder sees Basham's future – if it's at CB then perhaps we'll only bring in two powerful types.

Very encouraged to see Semple mentioned – for me he was the best we had in the Charlton playoff final. Admittedly the only time I've seen him, but he looked very strong and had decent positional sense.

Semple is very highly rated. My friend's son went to the same school and played football for the same team. Both parents also speak very highly of him as a person. He will have his chance in pre-season to impress Wilder more than he already has.

Perhaps Semple will be that fourth CB?
Hate to say it but Bash can cover at a push...

I think like some hae mentioned we will have Semple as a peripheral backup. If so I'd hope we signed 3 players to compete for the 2 slots.

Any 3 of Ryan Tafazolli, Aaron Pierre, John Egan, Curtis Nelson or Kyle McFadzean would enthuse and impress me.

After the cb's we have (or haven't) had over the last few years, that's the best list and wouldn't be unhappy with any of them.
