Long's new deal 'almost wrapped up'

No point comparing him to the outfield players as they're not goalkeepers. He is still silent and does not command his area. He still looks a disaster waiting to happen.

I agree he has weaknesses he needs to work on. That's why I'd like an experienced GK to come in and mentor him but I think there's plenty of potential there.

I would like CW to bring in Simon Tracey, He was the better communicator than Kelly, which is probably the main thing he needs to work on.

My only problem with Tracey was that he looked pissed. My brother used to work in Napoleons and Tracey was apparently always in there, boozing, smoking, gambling etc.

You're right re the first statement, mine was really tongue in cheek.

I'm good with banter to, as long as you are prepared to say it face to face if you get the opportunity.
I have no idea what you're on about. There was no banter intended in my post.

I've been around the loop on several occasions about being prepared to repeat whatever I say face to face. Rest assured I am, but I'm not sure why your feathers are ruffled here.

6-4 and can't deal with routine crosses. Drops the ball with alarming regularity. No sense of command or authority. No communication with the back four. Inability to hold onto the ball when stopping run of the mill shots, often blocking the ball back into the danger zone. Beaten on his near post and/or from distance far too often.

What's not to like?....

He would definitely benefit from having a good experienced keeper on the books who is available for free and likely keen enough at this stage of their career to be an understudy. Paddy Kenny surely a great solution, Pinchy?

That's fair enough mate but for me, he is just naturally quiet and to have that as a keeper doesn't fit for me.

Shit gambler though! Might lead him into dubious habits. Kelly didn't need to communicate. He was just "there" and his defence knew he was just "there".

Who performed well?
Long. Had a poor start but improved (as you say) as the season went on. Can't have been easy with the tactical nightmare going on in front of him, but he managed to get better and better as the season went on. Whereas a significant number of others started the season poorly and reliably stuck there.

Surprised at some of the negativity about Long. I'd have him as first choice again this season personally. But wouldn't risk having another young 'un as number 2.

I think we run the risk of "he's dropped another cross" - "he should have come for that one" - "the defenders had no idea where he was" - "beaten again from 20 yards". He was the most improved player last year and I would keep him as a alright number 2 but that's it.

I think it would help him if we got a settled defence so he could get to know them not just as footballers but as men. Playing behind different strangers every week (especially when they're experienced players like Edgar, Baptiste etc.) probably makes a young GK more reluctant to take charge, tell them what to do, bollock them when they don't etc. I'd like to see a few mainstays in defence that he can develop a rapport with like Paddy/Morgs/Jags/Kozzy/GearyPage etc.

...only Blades could be slagging off retaining young talent at the club...

Hope Long signs and that we get some decent competition in for him...an experienced keeper who preferably isn't going blind...

P.S- can't really comment on Ramsdsle, seeing only bits, but I'd guess he's not quite ready as yet..?

Doesn't matter when you can save EVERYTHING which Alan pretty much could.

Would you care to have a look at post #27 and tell us which bits are incorrect? You might then be a little less surprised....

I don't think anyone is slagging off signing up young talent, more questioning if this really qualifies as "young talent".

He's okay, and improving. He's not a promotion chasing keeper, but in our aim to find one we'd no doubt squander half a million quid and re sign Steve Sommonson, so overall I don't care too much either way about this one.
