George long

An experienced keeper. Like Wigan signing jussi jaaskelainen. Someone who has a calming effect on the defence and us fans. Just like the others out of contract George long has had his chance here and has been responsible for the recent years of decline.

Whilst I would agree with a Jaaskelainen type signing, you really can't say a young lad is responsible for our decline. A young lad shouldn't have made it into our first team so easily.

I would like to see him leave ,and a bigger more experienced keeper come in so we can rebuild from the back.

I would like to see him leave or be understudy to a experienced , well respected goalkeeper who doesn't take any shit and has the know how , to organise a defence . I have always said a goalkeeper can save you a minimum of 12 points .

Joe Lewis for me. Will be out of contract at Cardiff. 28 years old, 6 foot 5, needs to start playing regularly.

Anyone know about the compensation for Long if he leaves? Because he's been here a long time and played a lot of games could that drive the fee up? I hope so, because we'll be in a no lose situation.

Good shout, decent keeper. If there is a bit in the budget (or if Wilder knows of a release clause, you know one of the daft ones we always let get put in our player contracts) I wouldn't mind Smith from Northampton looks a prospect and will have re-sale value, which would keep Mcabe happy

I think you are letting an awful lot of mediocre players off the hook by pinning "years of decline" on George Long

Swap deal for Myhill & Brunt.

They'll have two England quality goalkeepers on their books.

(What a day to find Jose's last stash)

Two English One Welsh if it happens:D Ever since The Odemwingie pay structure revision, we now try to pay decent wages and low transfer fees. I think both Myhill and Brunt are pushing £60kpw combined.

Certainly will be, when we signed Lindegaard it was for £750k-£1.25m range it depends on firstly it happening and then what the tribunal sets. I think it will be slightly higher then that

Not meaning to pin it all on George obviously just trying to make the point he's been as responsible as the rest of them. Too many mediocre players to name but of the current ones left he shouldn't escape blame simply because of his age or the fact he's one of our own. He should never have been thrown in so early in his career, the Exeter home game springs to mind which cost us 2 crucial points. We can and must do better in my opinion.

How many points a season does Long cost us?! He is a very limited goalkeeper and that's being kind!

You can't possibly know, he never managed to play in front of a stable defence.

He's part of that problem IMO, he instills zero confidence in the defence, doesn't command or communicate well

No. He shouldn't have been playing for us, he should still be on loan. It's because Howard is so pants that Long has played.

I think we'll see in the future that Long is a much better keeper than people are giving him credit for.

He's improved a lot this season. If he keeps improving I can see him playing at a much higher level.

I hope so, but next season is huge for him. He's stepped up this season, but he's still not yet good enough to take us forward (if indeed we ever do go forward). If he improves his handling and gains confidence from playing behind a proper back 4, then we'll have a real player.

But it's all ifs at the moment. He's got to do it.

I think George has the ability to be a top class keeper. I think his problems are mental. He needs a manager who will instil confidence in him and he's been stuck behind poor defences the last two seasons.

Honestly can't believe some of stick Long is getting, he's 22 ffs and has bags of potential, yes he's been bang average this year but it can't be easy when you've got morons like Collins in front of you, we should definitely keep him IMO.

Agreed! Since he returned to the team he's been outstanding, kept us in a lot of games and I can't recall many errors either. In fact as the season progressed he seemed to win people over.

Northampton fans see their mistake-addled keeper as a superb asset. Same goes for Southend fans with their version.

Meanwhile we rip apart one of the very few shining lights for us this last season.

In Bladesland: we've had a shitter than shit season, so everything has to now be destroyed...

I think Long is decent at this level, and improving all the time. A bit more command of his area (which i'm sure he's aware of) and we'll be complaining when we sell him.

How many has he earnt us?

I can remember a few away games this season where people came back saying if it wasn't for him the opposition would have got a hatful.

West Brom have offered George Long a contract. Don't think he'd get anywhere near their first team if he went mind.

The Yang to SunJihi's Yin returns with 'info'. Brilliant stuff, it's truly close season now. Just need a kit thread and entrance music thread for a full house.

No he hasn't, there have been lots of other players on higher wages, having more experience and performing much worse whohave been much more responsible for our decline than young George.

Young George, bless. He's made his fair share of mistakes regardless of his age or wage they cost us points. We can do better.

I agree we can do better but we could also do a lot worse. As for him being responsible for where we are; he wasn't involved in the team that relegated us (cameo nothwithstanding). He only played 2 games in the season Simmo was terrible. The season after he was good for a lot of it and we had one of the tightest defences in the country. Then he was poor for the first half of the Clough/Weir season but certainly wasn't alone. Last season he hardly played. This season again, in a team littered with substandard performances he was one of the few positives. There is no way he should shoulder the same burden as some of the others forvwhere we find ourselves.

As for the sarcy "ah Bless" he is 22. Young for an outfield player but positively embryo like for a 'keeper so the point definitely stands. Yes he still has stuff to learn but he has certainly shown improvement this season and the things that he needs to improve on most, his communication and decision making, are exactly the things that will come with experience. I would like a new number one with him as back up but we need to prioritise spending resources on other areas of more urgent need initially.
