CONFIRMED Zach Giggs

Irrespective of the ‘debate about ‘papa’ Giggs there’s a likelihood that Manure didn’t keep the bairn on because of the negative publicity he would attract as / when / if he progressed to(wards) 1st team
That could / would also allow Giggs Jnr to pursue a career without the same level of scrutiny / publicity / baggage

Equally he might not be very good - thinks Cofie; Notman; Twiss ….

Well hopefully he'll become the next Tonge or Jagielka as those were picked up after being rejected by bigger clubs. There are many examples of good players that have initially suffered some rejection and then gone on to have good careers. Norwood started on Man Utd's books.

GLTTL!
There's no reason why he can't go on to have a good career if he listens and takes on his coaching advice.

We are a great choice for players looking to have a career. Even if he moves on to another club.
Players who have come through our academy (off top of head) in last 10 years. And gone on to have a decent level career.b(top 4 leagues)
Sharp
Naughton
Walker
Reed
Brookes
Ndiaye
Whitehouse
Whiteman
Ramsdale
Forte
Macfadzen
Maguire
Liban Abdi

Quite impressive when you think about it.

I can almost categorically state that it's nearly 100% the latter and very little of the former. Almost none of the players in Newton Heath's academy will make it into their first team, there's no disgrace in not making it at the elite level and we've a history of picking up those not quite good enough and turning them into decent professionals. 20 years ago, Michael Tonge and Phil Jagielka came from Man U; more recently David Brooks came from City.

The players in our team who came through the English system almost entirely came through academies at Cat 1. The notable exceptions are Jack O'Connell who joined Blackburn at 16; George Baldock who came through the cat 3 academy at MK Dons and Billy Sharp who came through at United before the EPPP system recategorised the academies.

Wes Foderingham: Fulham (1)
Adam Davies: Everton (1)
George Baldock: MK Dons (3)
Chris Basham: Newcastle United (1)
John Egan: Sunderland (1)
Jack Robinson: Liverpool (1)
Jack O'Connell: REYMCA United (non-cat) to U16 then Blackburn (1)
Ciaran Clark: Aston Villa (1)
Max Lowe: Derby County (1)
Jayden Bogle: Reading (1) to U14 then Swindon (3) for U15 then Derby (1)
Oli Norwood: Manchester United (1)
Ben Osborn: Forest (1)
Oli McBurnie: Leeds (1) to U14 then Bradford (3)
Rhian Brewster: Chelsea (1) to U14 then Liverpool (1)
Billy Sharp*: United (2)

Think jags came from Everton. Also don't forget Monty, who came from Leeds, where he chose to model his game on David Batty, rather than say Gordon Strachan.

You're right, I'm confusing myself because Jagielka is a Man U fan, I think, or at least is a Mancunian. He also joined was also over 25 years ago so he's probably not the best example anyway :)

To add a bit of balance here - whilst acknowledging Zach should be judged by Zach (not his dad) - Zach's dad has not as yet been convicted of any of the alleged offenses made against him. Whilst these allegations are disturbing, Ryan Giggs is yet to be found guilty of them. Additional to this fact, Ryan has also been an activist in support of Unicef - so the guy does have some humanity.
and there's high profile football players have great PR teams - water is wet!

Can anyone who watches the u21's give a update? Any chance he will be ripping up the left side of the pitch next season like his dad did?

He's still only 17 and mainly been playing for the 18s, don't recall him playing much for the u21s at all other than the odd sub appearance. So you'd think it's highly unlikely he'll be anywhere near the first team next season, will likely follow the usual route of u18s, u21s, then a couple of loans to various levels. - There are of course exceptions to that when players are exceptionally talented but it's rare.

Phil Jagielka, released by Everton and joined our academy before making his debut at 17.

Nick Montgomery, released by Leeds and joined our academy before making his debut at 18.

Michael Tonge, released by Man Utd and joined our academy before making his debut at 17/18?

David Brooks, released by Man City and joined our academy in 2014 before making his debut in 2016.

Stephen Quinn, signed from the Irish league and joined our academy in 2005, then went out on loan to Rotherham and MK Dons before making his debut in 2006.

None of these are really our "academy players" as none of them spent more than two years with our academy. Brooks spent part of that time on loan. Even Ramsdale was only with us for four years before being sold.

Kyle Naughton, Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker though, that's a different story. They were with our academy for a significantly longer period, since childhood.

I don’t get this self-imposed cut off point with academy/non academy players. Why are we saying two years for them to be classed as an academy player?

If they’d been here 23 months, does that have less merit than if they’d been here for 25 months?

Don’t forget Ndiaye. We’re very good at polishing and finishing excellent talent as well as developing players

Again though, not a product of our academy. We bought him in 2019, sent him out on loan for a season, then he spent one season with the development team before making his debut the following season. One season in the academy does not make him a product of our academy. Our academy often gets way too much credit for other people's work. I'm not disputing that we didn't help Ndiaye, but how much did he really learn in one year that he didn't already know playing for Boreham Wood? We just fine tuned what was already there.

Yes that was my point, we’ve done well to identify talent, bring them in and make huge sums of money from them because they came into our academy

I'm not disputing that, it just annoys me when I hear our fans calling them our academy players when they're not.

To our credit we have done well with this over the years.

I'm not sure it's such an issue as they pass out from our academy and into tour first team, so they're effectively graduates of the Sheffield United Academy, not anywhere else. But however it is viewed, as you say, its a credit to the club for doing that.

DCL ??

How's he been progressing?
It's a bit odd to describe..The U21s look set to win their league comfortably. The "better' players are either with the first team squad most of the time, dropping down only occasionally. Or they are out on loan for the next stage of their development. In recent weeks, the U21s have struggled to get anything going in games. Looking a bit disjointed, with players isolated.

Although they are getting results, few of the "still here and getting games" rump make you stand up and take notice. Maybe Jamal Baptiste. Maybe Jevan Beattie.

There's a - much of a muchness - quality about a lot of them. Good players. Certainly not awful. But don't particularly stand out. Giggs is one of those.

And on the one hand, you could call him versatile, as they use him in different positions. But on the other hand you could say they don't seem to know what to do with him.

They desperately need to be playing against better players, week in, week out.
