They both came for the briefest of loan spells with us and are now flourishing. I know its not immediately relevant as those making the decisions about their future probably have left SUFC, but in both these cases it can be said we missed a bit of a trick.

We'll never know if they'd signed permanently for us whether they would have progressed the way they have, I'm sure we have better systems of judgement in place now.

How many other young players have we had on loan who have really progressed recently? Matt Phillips has gone the furthest IMO if you exclude Kyle Walker, of course there was Connor Coady as well.

On the other hand look where John Cofie is, on loan at Chorley :P probably the worst off youth loan player we've had.

Hopefully we can pick up some gems next season, with it being much easier in the league above should we get there!

Bunn had a loan spell at PNE too. It seems he didn't develop into a real player until he hit his twenties.

Credit to him for getting it together after he looked to be drifting downwards.

On this note I've just read the Star article where Wilder seems to allude to us signing Joe Riley on a permanent next season.hopefully should we go up Chapman may also be doable.have to see I guess

John Egan played 1 game and was terrible. Harry Bunn made 2 sub appearances and was forgettable at best. Neither of them did anything worthy of note for the next 2 seasons. There was nothing in their performance that suggested they'd be any good. How did we "miss a trick"?

And i think the key here is that if we're in the Championship, the younger players like Riley and Chapman may see us as a stepping stone back to the Premier League without sacrificing much. Wages would be better in Championship and if they do well then either they will get promoted with the Championship side or get signed by another Premier League side because they have proved themselves in a very tough division

Spotting talent in a players young and old seems to be very subjective, Look at how when Dean Hammond was coming in we were all very optimistic and thinking he could do a good job, then you look at Coutts, only a few on here saw that he could be what he currently is and could play at a higher level, then clubs take a punt of people like Jordan Slew, Blackburn must have seen something, did not work out very well for him or the club really, we ended up the winners.

Didn't we also have Danny Baath the season we went down? Then he went to the Pigs the season after and was arguably one of the best centre halves in the league, and we'd pissed him off the season before playing Nyron Nosworthy and Shane Lowry ahead of him!

Got a hat trick for Oldham when they beat us 5-0 here, Billy McEwan's last game in charge..

He scored twice.

He holds one notable record: most goals in a league Cup game. He got 6 when Oldham beat Scarborough 7-0 in the early 1990s.

I walked out of the ground after Bunn chipped the 5th goal over Leaning at the Kop End

That remains the worst I've ever seen us play.

It's up there in my top 5. I'd driven 7 hours from Troon and still pissed up from a Scottish New Year.

You'd have to chuck in at home to Port Vale under Heath, QPR at home under Blackwell and probably Scunny at home under Adkins, for the complete absence of any effort at all. There were probably others under Adkins, but my brain is protecting my heart by blocking them out.

Then of course we had Arsenal Youth Team at home (Robson, FLC) where an old bloke with a limp crawled past the stewards to chuck his season ticket book at Robson.

I'll give it some thought. There was also some real tripe under Basset in early 88, Thompson in 98, Robson in 08 and Weir in 13.

Shrews at home under Adkins?

Southend at home this season?

Fleetwood at home or Crewe away under Clough?

Villa away under Warnock in the Prem?

Stoke at home under Robson?

I agree that we didn't miss a trick as such, but to be fair to the players, it's a very small sample and Egan's game in particular was a disaster situation for any young player given the circumstances.

Harry Bunn is a make shift squad player at Huddersfield. What trick have we missed there then ??

Egan has just been called up to the ROI squad, at this rate its not inconceivable he'll be at the next World Cup.

Its in the past, and yes he did only play one game, but having trained with the rest of the squad for several weeks its a shame he wasn't assessed properly, or perhaps he didn't show what he could do.

I've seen for the under 23's we are taking many youth players on trial and studying them in detail, so things clearly seem to be moving in the right direction.

Well aren't we lucky now to have Egan! :)
