Your memories going to BDTBL when a kid

1966 used to catch the bus (buses) from Darton, north of Barnsley and slightly closer to Leeds than BDTBL. All my relatives were Leeds, I was born in Leeds, but I hated them with a vengeance. Remember a Friday night match against L'pool, 1966/67 and I got threatened with a bottle on Shoreham street after the match.
Never ever went by car, we weren't posh enough. Used to love the atmosphere on the kop. We nearly always came out second best against Leeds apart from when Hodgy got substituted through injury and Mick Hill scored the winner. Although attending matches was risky due to all the trouble I preferred it to the sanitised contrived match day experience you get today. A person dressed as a pirate, music when a goal is scored, all seating, stand up at your peril. Too twee these days

You guys should look on the "Sheffield United images through the years" page on Facebook.

My problem is whenever I look at that I usually spend ages working out what game it is, and memories come flooding back. It's too easy to get lost down memory Lane.

I lost a full afternoon to Sharrowblade excellent flickr site a few weeks back as well

As a nipper, on my own, I'd get the tram from Darnall into Fitzallen Square and then walk down and then along Shoreham Street, always arriving just as the turnstiles were about to open. Once inside the ground, I'd walk round in front the cricket pavillion, and wait to see which way we were kicking, and then go and stand behind the opposition's goal. At halftime, along with many others, we'd "change ends", always having a friendly chat as we passed opposition fans going the other way. How different the atmosphere was in the 1950s? This all stopped when they decided to build the "new" stand.

In early 1960s, we were "re-housed" onto the Gleadless Valley, and I could walk to and from every game.

Nowadays, living in Lincoln, a visit to a game is effectively a full day's job, always taking in a visit to my Mother-in-Law with the wife.

I have been trying to find more info about highlights of Blades matches shown on ATV before YTV started in 1968. There were only two that I know of, they were Wendy 2 Blades 2 in Sept 1966 and Blades 1 L**ds 0 in Sept 1967 (Woody played in goal for 81 mins). Now you saying that the Blades v L**ds game in Feb 1966 was shown on ATV is new to me and I find that interesting, Maybe one day footage for these games will be found?

Silent can you get the Wendy v Blades match 2-2 draw anywhere ? One of only 2 matches my father took me to see.
He died in 1992.

This thread is amazing, the stories from the different generations are great to read. Thanks for the pictures and shared memories.
One common thing on here, and it applied to me too when I was young, is the excitement arriving at Bramall Lane pre-match kick off, the noise and atmosphere was truly special.
I also as a kid used to visit Hillsborough with wendy mates when United were away, and in complete honesty the atmosphere at Bramall Lane was far superior and as a kid that is what kept me going back to the Lane.

Random childhood memory of Bramall Lane… Wondering why blokes would lose their rag, stand up, and accuse opponents of being a "currant". Baffled for years.

Really.

Brings to mind a game I was at many moons ago and the chant "The Referee's a wanker" went up. Little kid in front asks his Dad "What are they signing Dad?". Dad thinks on his feet and replies "The Referee's a slanter - he's slant his decisions in favour of the other team"

On topic, August 1978 - Sheffield United 1 Liverpool 0. I wrote about it in a Flashing Blade once....

P.S - Great pics Walth.

Alright KentBlade, long time and all that, hope you're well.

Recently moved house, just round the corner near Bishops House, so not far away.
I recall you sent me a picture of Bishop's House so you are not far away.
Hope your youngster growing up now.
Still ok here but getting older as the years move on.
Have a good 2014.

I live slightly closer to bishops house at the bottom of Warminster Rd, the house wouldn't have been here when you lived up this way.

2 kids now, a 4yr old boy and 2 yr old girl, she's a hand full even at that age :-)

I'm just old enough to remember going to games on the kop and John St when they were standing. I can barely remember the games as I was only a nipper but I remember being amazed at how many people were there, the atmosphere got me hooked straight off.

The first game I have better memories of was aginst Oldham in the Zenith Data Cup. I got there with my dad a bit late, he'd been ill and we were looking for the Westfield Health enclosure, we bumped into my dads hero Tony Currie in the car park and asked him for directions, he walked us round and showed us to our seats then spent the 10 minutes talking to my dad, what a legend! We ended up winning 7-2 I think. Brilliant memory to have as one of my first games.

Me and the wife, our young sons first visit to Bramall Lane 1992, a family pitch invasion with my Dad taking the picture on one of our trips to Sheffield. The corner of the old Kop remains left of the picture.
His first match at the Lane was when we beat Forest 1:0 and Fjortoft scored (1997?)

It was 13th Sept 1997. Taylor got the goal.

looks like Keith Waugh the keeper? was it against Oxford?

Looking at it again, I think it is definitely the 3-2 one - the United player on the far left looks like Morris and the defender 2 to the left of Waugh looks like Gary West.

From left to right, I reckon the players are: Morris, Young, Curran, Garner, West, Trusson, Edwards, Waugh, Kenworthy. Henderson and Charles are missing.
