Makes sense. A few months pommpey alluded to the fact that Berts faculties were going......
Bert's memory failed to recall the game as it didn't happen in the time frame that was suggested and it wasn't 3-0.
However Bert's faculties will be departing tomorrow to foreign parts..... but he will be going with them.
He will be missing the Derby at The Lane for the first time since the 60's.

Stoke 3rd round 1983. They were first division. Obviously, we weren't. Held them to a draw at home I think and lost the replay. We were OK at home but dire away that season. The following season we played Everton and again got a replay which I understand we were quite unlucky to lose. The pig apparently put in a good performance and we were able to offload him to them. Which was nice.

I think the Everton game was in the League Cup (Milk Cup) circa Sep 1984. If memory serves we drew 2-2 at the Lane and lost 4-0 at Goodison, but I can't remember if it was a replay or a 2 legged match. We weren't disgraced as they were one of the best teams on the country at the time. Curran had already joined Everton in 1983, not long after the Stoke replay.

Mine was a 1-0 defeat at home to Derby. Either 85-86 or 86-87. Remember the scorer for Derby was the late Ross MacClaren and Derby bring loads, don’t think I had ever seen as many away supporters at the Lane and we could well have been out numbered that day. I wouldn’t be surprised if there hasn’t been a bigger away followIng at the Lane since.

Brownie Jnrs first game was Fulham in the 13-14 cup run. A 1-1 draw on a day that it absolutely pissed it down. Just a shame that he was maybe a year or two, too young to fully appreciate the cup run that season.
4th round January 1986

you sure, not many replays happen on a Saturday.
Yes, positive. The replay scheduled for midweek got postponed and then it was re-arranged for the same day as the 4th round.

It was a very cold afternoon and during half time I was telling Shred that I was amazed that he wasnt wearing a coat at all, he pointed to my woolly gloves and laughed at them! I miss him!

My first FA Cup game was a 1st round replay v Stockport at the Lane on 25 Nov 1980. We were shit, they were worse, it was fucking freezing and of course it went to extra time. We won in the end 3-2 with an own goal, Steve Charles and a Tony Kenworthy winner.

I think this was after we'd beaten the Inter Cities Fairs Cup winners, Newcastle United in the previous round. This was probably my first giant killing experience by the Blades. A great night as we kept the ariel threat of Wyn Davies quiet.

United had this tendency of beating clubs unexpectedly, building up our hopes and then crash out in the next round.

West Ham away, 1968 in the 5th round, couple of Phil Cliff goals and I could see the twin towers in the distance. Next round we lose to Leeds at Elland Road.

Liverpool at home, 1978 in the league cup. 1-0 Gary Hamson. Next round lose to Leeds (again) 4-1 at the Lane. (Return of TC)

As mentioned earlier. 1970 beat Everton 2-1 and then lose to Derby 3-0 at the Baseball ground.

One thing, we have always been consistent at being inconsistent.

That Leeds defeat was actually unlucky, they were riding high in the League, and we were struggling, relegated that season, not a nice place for an away fan Leeds, never liked them

I wen to the first leg, been working nights, no sleep and off to Edgeley Park. Slept all the way back on the train. I know a bloke, lives in Sheffield who is still a season ticket holder at Stockport..

2nd January 1993 against Burnley with my dad, he must’ve thought I was a lucky charm because I then went to Hartlepool, man united and Blackburn all at the Lane but he didn’t take me to Wembley the F****** W******

Barnsley FA cup 5th round 1990. Drew 2-2 . then 2 replays at Oakwell before winning 1-0 Agana pen .
That was mine as well - in fact only my second game at the Lane - first season I really followed the results religiously as a 10 year old. My Dad, not normally one for such gestures, bought tickets on the Saturday afternoon and hid them under my dinner plate that night to surprise me. Sat on the old John Street Upper, great memory of it

That was a great Cup run - Burnley were in the old 4th Division but still brought about eight thousand with them. Bassett said afterwards that the game very nearly got abandoned in the first half due to the frozen pitch - ref said ‘let’s give it ten minutes’ during which time Burnley scored at least once and their manager suddenly wanted to play on!

Remember going to laser quest after as well, not the worst day

I can't remember going to the 1980-81 Cup games, so I think my first was the 2-2 home draw to non league Altrincham. We lost the replay 3-0, the last time we lost to a non league team.
I have happier memories of my first league Cup game, we beat Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a Bobby Hatton goal.

My first was the semi final v Newcastle, 98.

Unfortunately missed out on the QF that year as my dad was working away at the time, during the week.

Pompey 2 Blades 0 on 2nd January 1971. Went on the train special that went straight to Portsmouth (no changing at London and I remember my dad saying that we were on the line that bypassed London and I would be interested to know what the route was, which stations we went through etc).

Looking at the match programme, my dad pointed out Mike Trebilcock to me and he was telling me that Mike scored two goals in Everton's 3-2 win against Wendy in the 1966 FA Cup final We had won 5-1 in the last two visits at Fratton Park so I was confident of us winning there again but goals from Ray Hiron and Trebilcock ended our dreams! After the match my dad said that being knocked out of the FA Cup would help our promotion chances.

On returning to the Midland station we heard news of the Ibrox disaster

Just off the top of my head your train journey would propobly been via the Birmingham area then to Reading, Basingstoke, Winchester, Eastleigh and Portsmouth.
Alternatively, it could have been down the Midland Main Line, the usual route to London, turning off at Cricklewood and taking part of the West London Line to maybe Willesden Junction then to Clapham Junction and down the main line from there to Portsmouth. There are many goods only lines which it could have taken some of which are now closed.
I’m guessing the train dropped you off at Fratton rather than going into the city centre.

My first cup game was against Everton, 1970 I think. From memory, Alan Ball scored first from a penalty but two second half goals from Reece and Addison gave us a very unexpected victory.
My cup dreams were dashed in round 4, we lost 3 - 0 at Derby.

My first Blades fa cup game was a 2-0 win v Bristol City on 4th January 1975.
I think Bristol were in the 2nd division then and we were in the 1st division.
I went to Altrincham for the 0-3 loss in the replay also.

Think it was the West London Line as my dad said we were going round outside West London. Not sure if we got off at Fratton station, when my dad and I went there in April 1990 we were trying to recall what it was like in 1971 and we remembered walking on a bridge between the station and the ground as we had lost each other in the crowd there for about 5 minutes in 1971

Will Berts faculties be drinking Mojitos with a black panther in deepest Holguin City

The Dudding Hill Line?

The Dudding Hill Line?

Yes, I would say so although it all gets a bit complicated as there are so many junctions and alternative routes, probably even more so in 1971 in that area of London. I would suggest the train crossed the river at Battersea, can’t think of the name of the bridge but it would be on the line which runs down the back of the stand at Stamford Bridge and then into Clapham Junction.

24.11.79 v Burscough, who up to that time I had never heard of and I don't think I've heard of them since.

December 1983 a replay at home to Lincoln City. Stan scored a late winner from a corner, as we were expecting extra time & stressing about the last bus back to Beighton. The other thing that sticks in the mind was the racist chanting to John Fashanu and that him & Mick Henderson kicked the crap out of each other all night.

My first FA Cup game: United v New Brighton on 8th January 1949
We won 5 - 2 with goals from Jones (3), Hagan and Warhurst. The attendance was 28,097
I'd only been going to BDTBL for a few weeks, but had already enjoyed my first Christmas Day game.
My dad bought me a red and white rosette for this match, which I thought brought the team good luck.
However, they were relegated that season so I later chucked the rosette on the fire. I was 9 years old at the time.
