Young Centre Backs

I was just thinking - when did we have 2 young centre backs like Egan and JOC, perfectly balanced left and right, a real rarety.

Then I thought back to the 2011 Youth Cup side with Harry and Tel Kennedy in it. I always thought Tel was a better footballer than Harry - and look where Harry is now.

I reckon if Tel hadn’t been injury prone and developed alongside Harry they could both be in the England team now. Stones always strikes me as having more confidence than intelligence, that’s OK for a striker but not at the back!

It just makes you realise why lads like Harry and Brooksy have to take their chance when it arises, even if staying with us for another year might have been better for their game (certainly in Harry’s case as he lost a year under potato head). One big injury and they’re forgotten - outside Guiseley!

Anyway, magic days for us at the back, and I hope things are going OK these days for the ginger John Terry!

I wouldn't call them perfectly balanced, considering how wide O'Connell plays in comparison to Egan.

Egan is also 26, so he's not that young.

Quality young centre backs have been the new strikers for a whle now: rare and increasingly valuable.I disagree on Maguire: he was ready to step up after his first full season, but should have gone up one division instead of two. He was treading water at United for much of his time in the first team, playing below his level. I found it astonishing that he was so underrated by our fans, particularly in light of the way the game was going in terms of ball playing defenders.The wider world seemed to misapprehend him as a big lump before having ever analysed his game.Tel Kennedy was massively ahead of his age range which is why he could still do a job in the first team, despite missing loads of football over many years. He would've had an excellent career.

What excellent international careers Ironside, McFadzean, De Juve, Whitehouse, Little Louis Vanarama, Long, Ramsdale and many other legends would have had if they had been injured like England Tel, eh?

Likewise Whiteman. But neither he nor Reed would have progressed playing for our u23s and they were never going to usurp Fleck and Coutts. It’s only by playing regularly in proper men’s football that they’ve developed.

I thought Ramsdale looked good for Wimbledon, he’s progressing.
