Being in league 1 finally kicked in yesterday when approaching the ground - a tiny stadium with an open standing terrace for us fans. Tho as we all know, standing in a terrace is the way football should be watched. What was funny was when the Yeovil fans started chanting "sit down shut up".....
The first half began with the blades bossing possession. It was calm and we were making it look easy as we strung pass after pass together. It looked good. It looked pretty. But, more importantly it lacked penetration. The passing was done predominantly in our half and the middle third of the pitch but when it came to making that pass in the final third, we were found wanting. Yeovil lived on the odd venture forward creating a couple of half chances through counter attacks but our defence never looked in trouble and Simmo was pretty much a spectator throughout the entire half. There was an incident reletively early on when a cross came in and Mcguire clearly handled the ball in the area so we were lucky to get away with that. As for the blades, we kept patient and passed it around with one decisive pass falling to Porter in the area but his first touch resembled that of a baby elephant and the chance went. The ball found its way into the net when Lowton converted from a Quinn free kick but joy was short lived as the ref gave a foul - not sure what for as it was at the opposite end to us. Shortly after, the Blades got their reward when Cresswells persistence paid off as Porter bundled the ball in.....I think. There was a moment of uncertainty before the ref gave it and the fans celebrated. There was no way anyone at our end could see whether or not the ball had crossed the line but the ref gave it and that's all that counts. Half time blades 1 up, and looking at the stats showed us having 61% possession.
Then came the muppets serving burgers at half time! There was ONE burger fan for the entire away support, no ale, no pies. And the two guys serving were the slowest pair of dumb asses I've ever encountered. I got there just before half time, was 3rd in the queue and was standing there for 10 minutes. Anyone else who stood in that queue will empathise.
Anyway, back to the game:
The 2nd half was shocking. It was like a different team showed up, albeit Yeovil stepped up a gear and began to press whilst the smooth passing was gone and we were struggling to put 3 passes together. Monty went off injured and we feared the worse as was clearly in some pain - I think Wilson said it's probably just a sprain but it now means we have 3 central midfielders on the treatment table. McCallister came on and offered little as we began losing the midfield battle - losing Monty was key to this. Our forwards had to live on scraps and there was no creativity whatsoever. Quinn tried and looked energetic, having a one on one with their keeper but, and this happened later in the game when he had a chance, he would not shoot on his right foot. There were a couple of decent moves that brought applause from the away fans - one inparticular involving Lescinel bursinig forward but was caught offside when it mattered. Yeovil continued to press and Simmo made a couple of very good saves to keep our lead in tact. You felt an equaliser was coming but United kept throwing bodies in the way and defended well - Collins, Mcguire and Simmo looking solid. They had a man sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence as the blades held on for a scrappy win. But a win's a win.

It was difficult to pick out a man of the match as there were no majorly outstanding performances. That said, I thought Collins was very solid so would probably give it to him. Mcguire also looked good and Simmo made a couple of crucial saves when called upon. Quinn was energetic and was our most attack minded midfielder always trying to get forward. The goal apart, Porter was ineffective and offered nothing. Flynn was terrible - I'm not sure what he offers the team - he certainly didn't want to know when the going got tough. Mendez Liang replaced him with 10 minutes remaining and I know it's only 10 minutes but he looked lost and confused, even running away from the ball one time when it was launched down the right! Jury is still out on Doyle, Cressy puts in a shift, Lescinel looked to be the weak link at the back misplacing passes every now and again, getting caught in possession and lacks pace, Lowton didn't do too much and was given a torrid time by their left winger in the 2nd half. Monty won battles in the first half and I don't think it was any coincidence that Yeovil starting bossing the midfield after he went off. McCallister offered little. Slew had a few long balls to chance but didn't really get the service.
It's 3 points and a clean sheet away from home so that is pleasing, and the fact that despite being under the cosh in the 2nd half, when Simmo had the ball he still insisted on rolling it out and playing football form the back. I like this philosophy and I think we will only get better at it - bearing in mind Adams' hoofball was only 3 months ago. What we are lacking though is some creativity in the final third, maybe McDonald and Willo could be the difference. Quinn seemed to be the only player trying to force the issue in the final third.
5 games in, 13 out of 15 points taken, unbeaten and a clear passing philosophy taking shape. It's not going to be perfect all the time straight away but we're getting there lads! Wizards.

Cheers for match report mucker.

Sounds a lot like the Tranmere match, except we held on this time. Excellent away result and a solid performance (by the sounds of it).

The positives seem to be Collins and Maguire's partnership and Simmo looking solid. Also, so far we have defended well as a unit and are well oraganised. Wilson has got them fit and well drilled. 13 out of 15 points is a dream start and we should not be complaining. We have not got out of 2nd gear and are doing very well so far. A glass half empty person may say we are riding our luck. Despite crisp passing, we have struggled to create things in the last third. That said, we do have quality (in Quinn, McDonald, Williamson, Lowton etc) and have been clinical when we had chances.

Brave header from Porter to score. Excellent chest down by Cresswell, after a lovely pass from Lowton. Decent enough move (though slightly suspect defending).

Agree with your comments re Flynn, looks useless and lightweight - get rid, we can't afford people who are nesh in this division, there are bigger and harder sides to come. Lescinel I'd disagree I like him he may not have been at his best yesterday but in general has been sound, I also think Lowton is a good player but is still learning. Mendez-Laing, think he needs to stop spending so much time on twitter and concentrate on his game, he clearly has the pace but reminds me of John Francis in the sense that he doesn't take the ball with him. The defence in general looks better than last year probably down to fact it's not been chopped and changed.

Highly likely Quinny and Monty will go this week so we'll need some new players we also need another striker, porter looks poor to me.

That said 13 points from 15 with a side in transition is fantastic, I think September will be tougher than August in terms of teams we play we never get owt at Scunny, Huddersfield and a trip to Wycombe.

Maybe be the better teams will bring better proformances from our players. But i'll be a happier blade once the transfer window closes and we still have our squad in tact as it is now.

13 from 15 is a great start the fixtures listas been good to us the way it came out but we still had to win these games which we have done in 4 of them.As all the pundits say if you can win when your not playing well that got to be good news for Blades bad news for the rest.

Spot on summary Thatcham. I thought we were actually outplayed in pretty much every department yesterday and were very lucky to come away with 3 points. The performance probably warranted a 3-1 defeat to be honest with only really Collins (MOM again) and Quinn looking any better than a 6/10.
We're in a false position right now and should in reality be 6 points worse off in yesterday and the Walsall game.

Can't agree that we were outplayed in every department - not by a long way.

We had the better of it until we scored, then sat back too much and didn't look dangerous enough on the counter-attack. When you're away from home you have to expect to soak up some pressure. Being in League One doesn't alter that.

As an away performance, it was competent. We didn't set the world alight, but we got the goal, then restricted them to a couple of chances for the remainder of the game. There were no late scares either - in fact in the last few minutes Yeovil barely touched the ball in our half.

I can't say it would have been unfair if Yeovil had taken a point, but they'd have been lucky to take all three.

Scoring just before half time

We've scored just before half time on two occassions and it seems to have had an adverse effect on our performances. At Tranmere we probably edged the first half, looking good on the ball and passing well, but not creating many chances. We were more clinical than Tranmere and went in with a lead. Second half we sat back and invited pressure. We looked very solid, but the passing and composure had gone. Whereas we defended solidly and looked well oragnised we could not string any passes together and had no outlet. We conceded late on against Tranmere. Yeovil seems to be pretty much the same, except we picked up a point. The difference between Yeovil and Tranmere? I'd say a bit of luck (they missed a sitter - the header wide after SS' parry), excellent defending and a lack of quality (Tranmere slightly better than Yeovil).

In the games where we have gone in 0-0 at half time we have had a different dynamic in the second half. We have come out and played and beaten teams relatively easily. I wonder how much of this is down to the Wilson's team talk at half time and what the result is. Scoring at any point is a good thing, but just before half time seems to have adversely effected. Be interesting to see if the pattern continues.

Watching the highlights on Blades Player we seemed to ride our luck in the second half. They had an excellent chances when Simmo parried a fierce shot and their striker headed wide. It was a glaring miss. He had time and how he did not hit the target. Maybe 1-1 would have been a fair result, but when your luck is in. That said, I thought the disallowed goal was harsh. Just a case of keepers being overprotected. We had a man on the keeper, but he stood his ground and did not raise his arms. I thought the keeper was stranded and was lucky to get the foul.

Agree with the comments re Flynn, he could be a home player when we have more of the ball he might be a little more effective. I like Lescienel, he gives us a lot more going forward than other left backs have in the past. The thing with the defence is it has been the same 4 and keeper for 5 games now which is always a bonus. I thought Maguire looked a little sloppy in the first half and was caught out a few times, however DW must have given him a kick up the arse as he came out looking up for the battle and determined to get us the three points.

Hope Quinny and Monty stay, if they don't and they leave on the last day it could be disaterous, especially how weak we looked without Monty in the middle in the second half. One thing I noticed was Quinny's passion after the whistle and it is something I have been keeping an eye on this season. He looks like he is here for the battle and wants to get this club back to the Championship, I for one hope and think he will stay but you can never rule anything out in this funny old game.

The player with the header was flagged off side, so it made no difference.

And it was an absolutely fantastic save by Simonsen either way. Ehmer didn't miss the target with the rebound.

I feel the main reason we struggled to create anything clear-cut is the two playing in central midfield. It's obvious with Doyle and Montgomery in the middle we're going to create less. We were missing our two most creative midfielders in McDonald and Williamson, so we couldn't control the game in the middle of the park and keep possession whilst making progress offensively. Because of that, Quinn kept coming inside to try and do that but because he'd drifted inside his only real options were Flynn, Cresswell and Porter.

Flynn is doing well tracking back and helping out the defence, but I'm yet to see him really cause trouble the other way yet. I'd like to see him play a few home games where he gets a real chance to attack. And unfortunately we had no pace up front to really cause them trouble with balls in behind, so it was easier for them to defend. You always cause alot more problems when you get the opposition facing their own goal.

Fingers crossed we can get a bit more creativity in the middle and use a bit more pace in our front line to get defenders turning. Even if they're not the greatest of players, pace will cause no end of problems against teams in this league.

Ah ok. I didn't realise. It was not clear from the (crap) commentry. In that case, it seems it was a solid performance and Yeovil did not seem to create any clear cut chances.

It seems that Wilson got this right (as he did against Oldham). He played two defensive central midfielders and obviously wanted to protect the back 4 and try to nullify their midfield. His game plan seemed to be that if we kept it tight and were patient, then we might nick one. We have good attacking options with the full backs getting forward and Quinn is creative. Plus, give Cressy half a chance and (at the moment) he will put it away. Wilson gambled a little bit on us having enough quality to nick a goal and then being solid enought to keep them out. I am sure he will alter his game plan for Saturday when we host Bury. I would expect Williamson or McDonald to feature and Flynn (or Mendez-Liang) to be given more of a chance to attack (and not be too worried about tracking back).

I completely agree. What I said wasn't a criticism, just an explanation for the lack of chances we're creating away from home at the minute. We weren't great yesterday by any means but we got a solid 1-0 away win, so no complaints from me.

Our line-up all depends if Williamson or McDonald are fit for the weekend. McAllister will surely come in to the 11 if not?

I'm quite looking forward to the game on Saturday, because I'm under the impression that Bury will be a completely different test to what we've faced so far. They'll look to get the ball down and play football rather than try and kick us off the park like a few teams have done recently.

At the end of the day,we were poor.yeovil were very poor, other than us goin 1 up,the highlights were the blades taking the piss out of the stewards haircuts,so that gives you a clue to the amount going on the pitch that was worth shouting about. leaving the ground after the final whistle,i overheard a female yeovil fan saying to her hubbie " SHEFF UTD wernt as good as i was expecting ? " Hmmmmmmm. that about summed up our performance. but the 3 points are ours, so onward forward and upward, bye the way, just back, GREAT WEEKEND.

Was not a criticism Daz owd mucker. I'd start McAllister and Harriot on Wednesday and say 'you've got a great chance of starting on Saturday if you play well tonight'. Saturday will be interesting. We have momentum, so let's hope we keep up the winning ways/unbeaten streak.

yeah, bless em, they seemed to enjoy themselves, they obviously dont have much footie to enjoy ! i laughed when the younger one came back, and blades were sayin he had been for shit ! the lad was in stiches.
