There can't be much undeserved criticism there. You've 90% agreed with me for a start. All you've done is point out his ability to be sub-standard in more than one position.

What I've said is nothing like that. Basham is not the best central defender on the books (I'd go with O'Connell or Wright for that); nor is he the worst. He's not the best central midfielder (Fleck and Coutts are better IMHO); neither is he the worst (he's better than Reed and provides a safer option than Scougall). What playing Basham does do is allow us to change from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 (diamond) to 4-3-3 like we did on Boxing Day without having to make a substitution and that has been key in a number of games when Plan A hasn't worked.

His contract is up at the end of the season and any extension would be as a backup at best but until then he'll provide us with options that nobody else in the squad does. He's in Wilder's first team for a reason, even if some can't see it.

As much as I appreciate what basham can bring he doesn't for me bring any physical presence in midfield or at the back, and I really do not see how the midfield is better with him in the mix, last season for instance we were continually steamrollered in midfield when he was a regular player, not having a go just my opinion.

Point taken mate, but he's not the only one forgiven for last season's sins though is he?

I really can't see any worth in having Basham in a starting line-up. He's a weak liability in a defensive position, prone to getting bullied and outmuscled, and his success rate in tackling is mixed at best.
In midfield he tends to kill all forward momentum when on the ball.

Wright is simply the best defender we have.
He runs about as much as Done.

Its a nice situation compared to the last 2 seasons... Collins, Jay Mc, Magahey etc.

Yes when you put it like that then its a no brainer !!! Plodding Collins, Calamity Mceveley and no brain Magahey -aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhggggggg get me out of here !

Ive picked Wright.

But while Basham has the place and is playing pretty good i don't see Wilder changing it for the sake of it,it will change either by form drop, suspension or Basham is needed elsewhere in the team as is what happened in the last part of the game against Oldham.

Basham is a great assett to have around the team, but when all players are fully fit and firing on all cylinders the back three has to be Ethan,Jake and Jack and the middle three Mark,Paul and John,so that leaves Basham to warm the bench.

Wright for away/tougher games (Bolton/Bradford/Millwall) and Basham for home games where we are unlikely to have to defend as much.

Wright had an injury recently but it looks as though all the back 3 (not just basham) are keeping him out on form, how it should be.

No brainer, Wright is the glue that holds the defence together, like lock tight naturally. EEL then matches up against one of the oppo centre halves, where he looks more comfortable than when he's the spare man.

Basham is doing fine at what he should be doing, filling in for suspensions and injuries. Once the main men are back, for me Wilder should be putting him back on the bench. Not the biggest of Basham's fans, but he's excellent to have as a utility player at league 1 level.

Basham has been decent but when Wright plays O'connell and EEL look so much better and more confident, Bash doesn't seem to organise them properly Wright does.

Individually Basham might just edge Wright
But got to agree with the above

When Wright is playing as support centre back, EEL and JOC are simply superb.
So for me.....play Wright instead of Basham.

JOC is the only unstoppable defender we have imo. I even include EEL in that.

Really interesting result to the poll - although to be fair, the result is only a wish list for forum members.

Would be interested to know what forum members would do if the question was:

Based on what you know about CW - WHO will he start - Basham or Wright?

There really is only one answer - and that is why we should go top of the league on Saturday.

Basham, not that I think he's the better option. But he doesn't warrant dropping.

I agree with you.

Basham has issues, but in this team he fits nicely.

For all the fans that actually want Wright I wonder if you have noticed how CW often uses Basham in a game.

How many noticed on Boxing day (and it has happened before) that the TEAM went to 4 at the back, 5 minutes before half time with Bash moving into a centre midfield role. The team switched back to 3 at the back at the start of the 2nd half.

It seems that Bash is the ONLY player who can play this role - CW & AK use this tactic during games to alter the style and formation so as to try and cause the opposition issues.

Only Basham can play this role - and it gives us so much flexibility to change the team during matches.

The other thing with Basham - CW made, Billy, Bash and Brayford his "senior" players in the squad and it is no surprise that Basham is re-instated somewhere in the team after being out. He also appears to have cleaned up his act in daft and stupid tackles and tends to stay on his feet all the time now.

I appreciate some (as the pole suggests) want Wright back - but Bash is probably 2nd on the present team sheet after Billy.

Surprised by this. Basham is decent centre back who can easily cover for the midfield as per Boxing Day.

He's played virtually throughout the good run. The last goal he could be culpable for was the Chezzy goal I thunk

Not his biggest fan but thought this would be closer.

Basham for me as he's the man in the winning team

106 to 16, didn't see that coming!!

Another good performance from him today (as well as EEL and O'Connell I may add) tackled when he had to and carried the ball put to add some impotence to our attacks which was much needed second half. One wobble in first half with the ball scared me but no way should wright come back into a side that has conceded just 2 goals in last 7 league games one of which being that freak deflected goal at Coventry.

He brought the ball out of defence superbly every single time he had it. Showed a lot of composure and a good first touch on a number of occasions.

It's obvious why he's in the team.

I think Wright makes EEL and JOC better. He is a very calming influence, however Basham offers versatility in formations.

Horses for courses

Could've badly cost us twice early on with his trademark errors. If he was 'good' today then 'poor' would be terrifying.

I have been critical of Basham in defence but th fact is we haven't let more than 1 goal in in a league game since Bradford in October

He did start badly TD but improved hugely from 10 minutes in and was pretty solid from then on.

Credit where it's due and all that. :)
