Speaking exclusively with Football League World, we asked Sky Sports pundit and former player Lee Hendrie: 'Do you think Sheffield United have a squad strong enough right now to compete in the Premier League if they go up? Or would they need to strengthen considerably?'

Fitness is the key difference. We took the lead a lot towards the end of last season and Southampton currently take the lead more often than you think. Prem clubs don’t mind going behind against us and Soton, as they know they have 5 subs and 8-12 mins added on at the end if they need it. Fitness is everything in a prem that’s now devoid of proper footballers, and full of machines. I understand what Kompany was trying with not having a pre season, our players should be tasked with doing extremely intense running for 2 hour spells, as that’s what’s necessary at a minimum.

This interview with Dwight Gayle is interesting, from 1:13 he compares Steve Bruce and Eddie Howe. It suggests that players are important but coaching is probably the key.

That is an issue when you come up. The level and intensity of coaching needs as much of a critical examination and upgrade as the squad but the management/fitness teams that got you promoted and usually untouchable.
