How many World Cup winning players have played at Bramall Lane?
They must have won their medal before playing at Bramall Lane....
and who did they play for?

An easy start, Martin Peters, Sheffield United and West Ham United(?)
England 1966.

There's a few from last season - Martinez, McAllister, Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Garnacho.

Cesc Fabregas as a sub, in the first half he had a lovely pitch side view on Christian Nade's goal.

Oliver Giroud (also as a sub) when we beat Chelsea 3-0 in 2020. Alphonse Areola (West Ham, Jan 2024) was also in that World Cup winning French squad but didn't play in any of the matches or the final.

Martin Peters played at Bramall Lane for West Ham in 1965 before he won his WC winning medal.

Couple from the French 2018 squad:

Raphael Varane played 6 minutes for Manchester United as they stole a 2-1 win against us in 2023/24.
N'Golo Kanté played 15 minutes for Chelsea as they beat us 2-1 in 2020/21

Olivier Giroud played for Chelsea here after winning the World Cup in 2018. No fans of course, as it was Covid. Kante also played in the second of the Covid home games.

From the 1966-67 season.

Jimmy Greaves - Tottenham Hotspur (2-1)
Greaves scored a penalty.

Ray Wilson & Alan Ball - Everton (0-0)

Bobby Moore, Martin Peters & Geoff Hurst - West Ham United (3-1)

All of the 11 in the final played for their clubs at the Lane the following season apart from Stiles and Cohen..
Banks - Leicester 26/11
Wilson, Ball - Everton 10/9
J. Charlton - Leeds 27/3
Moore, Peters, Hurst - West Ham 29/10
Hunt - Liverpool 28/4
R. Charlton- Man Utd 26/12

Garnacho was not in the World Cup squad - he didn't even make his Argentina debut until June 2023. The other four all did though. Also from that Argentina squad, Sergio Romero (Spurs) and Gonzalo Montiel (Forest) played at the Lane last season.

A couple of questions.

What was the capacity of Bramall Lane in 1966? Still a three-sided stadium?
Did England winning the World Cup that year have a positive effect on attendances?
not sure but our biggest home attendance in 65-66 was 35.682 v Leeds (lowest was 12,479 against Newcastle)
the following season after World Cup 66-67 was 43,490 v Wednesday (lowest was 15,008 v Fulham)

Cohen played in the FA Cup replay in March 1967.

Stiles played for Man U when they beat us 3-0 at Bramall Lane in October 1967. You can see him in the background below. I saw Stiles play for Man U reserves at the Lane in Sept 1970. After the game he told Paddy Crerand off for shouting at me!
