First of all, not here to gloat or anything, but just wanted to give a Wolves perspective on events tonight.
I was sat close to your support and it seemed very subdued right from the start, Impressive turnout for an away game on tv, but didn't really offer any vocal support for the team which I thought was surprising. As for events on the pitch, that was our best performance of this season (and many other seasons) by miles and you were very unlucky to catch us in that mood today. We would have beaten anyone today and you should see the Blades' performance in that context.
I was very impressed with Holmes. I don't know much about him but he covered a lot of ground and looked your most dangerous outlet and was always trying to get forward. Similarly I thought Baldock played well and put in some good challenges. No surprise that they both went off as both put in a proper shift. Your interpassing from midfield and the back was fine and you had a lot more possession in the first half than a lot of teams that we have faced at home. I thought where you struggled was by not getting tight on our three forwards who were able to turn and run at you at will and also by not cutting out the long diagonal balls to the wingbacks which allowed them to get dangerous crosses in. Also there seemed to be a lack of penetration up front - I didn't see Wilson touch the ball and Clarke didn't really bring your midfield into the game.
One other comment, no yellow cards for either side and it was good to see you trying to play football. A lot of teams have set out to just kick us this season and Wilder can take credit for setting you out to play in a hard, but fair way. Game over, just move on. I saw a couple of comments from other posters who said keep doing what you are doing and just tweak it a little. Spot on I would say. This league is a marathon and you are still very much in it. Good luck for the rest of season. .
Fair assessment and us Blades fans need to take account of what you're saying there. Wolves have spent huge sums of money, are by a long way the best team in the division AND that was, according to Jonathan, the best they've played in a long time. Whilst we know we have some issues within our team, a 3-0 defeat at Wolves in the current situation is no need for panic. Most of our rivals will still have to face them and will, in all likelihood, get a similar result to us.
I didn't head down to Molineux but the level of vocal support from the Blades was probably not helped by the fifth minute worldie into the top corner of our net. As soon as that happened, I was subdued at home - couldn't see a situation where we could (a) keep Wolves out for the remaining 85 minutes and (b) nick a goal of our own - whilst the game wasn't over, it felt like it was going to be a long night. Once it went to 2-0, I was only half-watching the match as it was all over and I suspect the United fans struggled to keep positive after that. United actually deserve a lot of credit for keeping the score down. After 2-0, we got into the game a little and got some control of the ball, there wasn't much in the game - granted, Wolves maybe sat back content to wait for the counter opportunity - but we never looked like pulling one back. The third, unlucky deflection, and then we stood firm with a man less and kept it at 3-0. It's never nice to lose or to lose by 3 but you can forgive the team this one considering the opposition performance.
Sad thing for me is the number of negative posters who want to jump on little faults and slag the team off once again. We are not supposed to be in contention for the Play Offs, we're struggling a little at the moment but we're well ahead of expectations. I know that many will have got giddy when we were top of the league in October but it's reality that our budget has proved our Achilles heel. If Wolves' star midfielder was injured, they probably have a 90% quality replacement. We replaced Coutts with Lundstram and now we're trying to settle a League 1 midfielder or Wolves' reserve midfielder (who had been playing in League 1) into his place instead. Anybody that honestly expects us to compete against the finances of Wolves, Aston Villa - even Boro' and Wednesday, Leeds and Fulham - needs to take a reality check. We can't. That's a question for our owners but it should not be used to criticise Wilder and his team. We can hope to compete with these teams - and indeed, we are doing for the majority - but we cannot expect to. We're shopping in Aldi, Villa are shopping in Waitrose and Wolves are shopping in Harrods - eventually, you're going to be able to tell the difference.
It's clear that we need to upgrade the quality of our team but that, in our financial situation, will take time. We need to nurture the likes of Brooks, find unpolished diamonds - as the likes of O'Connell, Fleck and Baldock are proving to be - and spend what money we have on quality where possible. Our big summer signing was Richard Stearman - let go by Wolves and now Fulham in recent years. We are challenging these teams but we are taking players they have deemed not quite good enough for them. I'm still hopeful that the Prince might prove to be capable of providing a little more investment but if he doesn't, we're kind of in Ipswich territory where we need to keep blooding and nurturing our own youngsters, pick up bargains and hope that our manager can make up the shortfall to hang on to contending at the top end. To get to a point where we expect to challenge and compete, it's going to take investment from somewhere - or a Wilder miracle.
We are what we are until the summer. We're punching above our weight, we've got a chance to get back in contention over the next month or so and we've got to back them. Yes, Moore and Blackman probably need upgrading to push for promotion, yes we need a dominant central defender, yes we need some quality at the top end of the pitch but we have got what we have got for the next four months. Criticism of players - undeserved in many situations considering their part in getting us up and getting us in contention in the first place - is not going to help. We have a unity about the club right now and hammering the players will damage that.
