"Average distance from the pitch" is meaningless though. Even the fattest of us only occupy one seat so I'm only interested in what the view is like from mine.
In large stadiums you can see fuck all from up on high. The first time I went to Valencia's Mestalla the game below was like subutteo and planes coming in to land at the airport five miles away were closer to the action. The next time I didn't make that mistake, got a better seat and the whole experience in a real old-school ground was fantastic.
So, by all means build a ground that gets more people in, then give the extra punters binoculars. Though, as West Ham have found, increasing the crowd size hasn't increased the revenue.
