By appointing Morgan til the end of the season, the board have effectively written this season off.

I'm now thinking we may even struggle to reach the playoffs

Interestingly United have never been promoted under a manager in his first managerial job. The usual pattern is that promotion happens with a manager with some lower league managerial experience where United is his first biggish job (Bassett a partial exception):

1939: Teddy Davision (ex Chesterfield)
1953: Reg Freeman (ex Rotherham)
1961, 1971 John Harris (ex Chester)
1982, 1984 Ian Porterfield (ex Rotherham)
1989, 1990 Dave Bassety (ex Watford and Wimbledon)
2006: Neil Warnock (ex Bury and numerous others)

I said yesterday before this farce that I don't think we'll win again this season, and I stand by that. I would be surprised if we don't draw a couple of games though.

How many points did you think we were getting with Wilson?

Well we were getting draws, and the odd win. If we'd kept Wilson in I think we'd have been good for at least the playoffs.

That's far from certain now

and for the record, I am lumping straight on auto £££. Apparently your mean't to back the new manager no matter what. It's what people on here were telling me I should do with Wilson

Realistically, we only need 5 points to secure a play off place - MKD would have to win all 4 of their remaining games to overhaul that, which I don't see them doing.

Surely we can scrape a win and 2 draws from 5 games?

Yes I reckon we need about 5 points for the playoffs.

The earliest we are ruled out of automatic promotion is next Tuesday if we lose both of the next 2 games.

It was still all to play for under Wilson, nothing changes for Morgan.

It's football, no one knows what's going to happen. I have to begrudgingly acknowledge this is one of the reasons I like the game.

If I had control of events, I'd promote United straight to the PL ......

yeah i can nothing has changed for me i'd say 9 or 10 points then its playoff lottery time.

i think we'll make the playoffs i just think the board have done what they were going to do in May because they know we will not go up via playoffs. Give morgs 5 games plus playoffs see what he can do before looking for a new man after playoff misery.

I know this is a triumph of hope over experience, but if we do end up in the play offs, you never know. We must be due a win there - surely?????

Well one things for sure it will be the worst club we have ever played.

If Morgan didn`t get a single point he would actually be worse that Adams in his first 5 games...

Manager PPG after 5 Points in first 5 Total if replicated
Warnock 2.60 13.00 83.00
Wilson 2.60 13.00 83.00
Spackman 2.20 11.00 81.00
Speed 1.80 9.00 79.00
Blackwell 1.60 8.00 78.00
Porterfield 1.40 7.00 77.00
McKewan 1.40 7.00 77.00
Thompson 1.40 7.00 77.00

So Warnock started better than Wilson, had more promotions than wilson and yet someone said Wilson was better.

The same as Wilson, Wilson is only below him on Alphabetical order...
...although correct on the promotions.

No. As you know Darren we have only ever been promoted under play off conditions under a Liberal Government (22nd April 1893). Reckon it might be light years away that one. We have had a 120 year wait already!

Though because of the Con-Lib Coalition and thus partial Liberal involvement I expect more drama, perhaps the last time a goal that crossed the line (scored by Flynn) was not allowed before goal line technology was introduced at Wembley (next season) or a Clive Thomas moment of it being 0-0, Porter's header crosses the line but the ref blows up in the 93rd minute saying it's extra time as the ball was in mid flight thus had not crossed the line and in extra time we then go onto lose.

After all we did spoon penalty number 11 (was it) somewhere into deepest Harrow despite being 1-0 after 3 penalties or whatever it was.

Actually, the Liberals being in government is good for us. As you say,we were promoted in 1893 under a Liberal government and won the FA Cup in 1915 under a Liberal government and had never been relegated when the Liberals were in government until 2011...oh...bugger!

How about this:

The leader of the opposito sits for a South Yorkshire constituency (Doncaster North)
As does the deputy prime minister (Sheffield Hallam)
And the foreign secretary is from South Yorkshire (William Hague)

When was the last time all 3 parties had a leading figure with string South Yorkshire connections? That has to be an omen. Or something.
