Will the real Matty Done

scored a cracker at Oldham, but yes, not in the same form as last season.

I think, he's not a very good winger. Barnsley fans thought he was gash. He was OK in League 2 for Rochdale but that's about it until they tried him up front and suddenly, wow, what a player.

He came back and did well in his first couple of games then dropped off. He looks to me like a player who has played all his career up front being asked to play on the wing rather than the other way round.

.... Please stand up !!

Time to show us some of that previous form when defenders where shit scared of you.

Indeed, and some of us are asking the question as to why we are trying to accomodate him into the team and alterting the formation.

He either has to perform or go to he bench.

Just think Adkins has run out of initial patience with Done and we will be back to 2 up front instead of this fancy stuff just to fit done in.

It's a tricky one with Done, I think he wants to play as a striker in a 4-4-2 alongside a big man. Sadly with Sharp being our top scorer that's not an option. Agree that the 4-3-3 attempts to fit him in have not worked out so far.

It seems simple really, he's a striker and not a left winger. He could play him in a 442 with Sharp up front but that would be to the detriment of Adams because he's not that effective on the left wing, because he's a striker too.

The squad is very unbalanced still. I think it's unfair to judge Done on his performances from the wing, it isn't his best position. If we put Sharp on the left wing he'd look the same too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a team without Sharp in just to see if there's a better balance to it. I'm not knocking Sharp as his all round play has been good, however his finishing, despite being our top scorer, hasn't been up to scratch. He's missed a lot of guilt-edged chances. I'd feel more confident that Done would put away those chances.

Played right he'll get us 20 goals plus, play him out of position and ask the Barnsley fans what they thought of him.

Lets try and remember hes been injured hes still getting back up to speed , match fit
strikers get fitter when they put in one or two and speed up again

Starting to think he had an out of character purple patch that he doesn't have the talent to re-gain.

He runs about a lot, often to no effect, but other than that he's largely a waste of space.

When he's played on the wing he can't do his harrying of defenders and closing down because the team would lose shape and he'd leave gaps for the other team to exploit. That is a big part of his game, he seems to feed off the energy it creates and the response from the crowd.

Play him upfront and he'd be given more license to do so and his performances would also improve.

I'd really like to see him played upfront again to see what he can do.

Can see him leaving for that reason. He wants to play down the middle but Adkins won't play him in front of Sharp.
Adkins has to address this. He's set his stall out to play 442 and that means leaving some of our 'better' players out. The best compromise is to alternate between Sharp and Done, like Warnock did with Webber and Kabba for a while.
I think by McNulty going out on loan he's sent a message to Done; you're still in my plans. Whether that's strong enough remains to be seen.

Thought that at Fleetwood. Done was 1 of best performers last season you could visibly see the difference If he came off bench. But he was anonymous on Tuesday. But as most have said above he has fell to same curse that 90% strikers have at utd. Bought as a atriker scoring for fun. So what do we do stick him on the wing. Just look at Murphy which is huge regret of his time at us. That he never got a proper chance through middle to get best out of him

He has rare streaks of quality, stick him up front and see what he can do. He has a touch of Keith Edwards about him.

They used to put Keith on the left wing didn't they? Are all football people idiots? I was thinking aloud, I already know the answer.

He has a certain nuisance factor about him. Up front that sort of energy and pressing is useful, out on the wing it's a bit of a waste. If a genuine 4-3-3 in an advanced forward position, it should in truth be something he has enough about him to adapt to. If it's between him and Adams for a role up front, I'd prefer Adams out wide. I thought against Rochdale that approach worked well.

I mean rare for us...go for it He looks like he knows where the back of the net is.

F++k knows we've had plenty of strikers who don't.

I think the real Matty Done will re-appear in the New Year....

....when he is playing for Wigan.

He played up front at Fleetwood and was pants. Looked to have lost a bit of pace, made very few runs other than to chase, and poor first touch. If we can't get last season's player back he shouldn't start.

He clearly knows where the back of the net is, but, maybe like McNulty there isn't enough to his all round game. As Bergen Blade pointed out he, rather than the scapegoat hate-figures Collins or McEveley, has been at fault for two or three goals we conceded.

I hope we can find a system that accentuates the substantial positives he offers, but it - and he - would have to eliminate the negative.

Done is most impressive busting a gut trying to get on the end of things in the box, arriving late, arriving on the back stick, being a mobile target in the box that so many teams lack. That's how he scores a lot of goals. He loses half, or maybe more, of his game by playing on the wing.

I'd give Done a chance upfront with Sammon to give Billy a kick up the arse he needs, Billy needs those finishing boots back.

Yeah, I'd bench Billy for a game or two.

And have JCR-Done-Adams up front. Very mobile: JCR & Adams switching wings; Adams & Done switching from central striker to wing.

In saying that, Billy's vital to us generally. I just want to see Matty Done's season kick-started somehow.
