Wilder's new approach to contracts

Makes interesting reading Sothall, and it's refreshing to see that Wilder is attempting to simplify the player's agreements to ensure that we don't end up with a contractual situation that has the potential to create a topsy-turvy payment system.

I imagine that Wilder must love the fact that he can affect the recruitment of players at the club he loves. Being this concerned illustrates that what lies at the root of today's SUFC is an attitude that will hold us in good shape for years to come.

Love the idea that playing so many games automatically trigger an extension. Almost too simple and sensible!

I'm not sure I like the sound of this if I'm honest .

Whilst i understand CW's understandable reluctance to see players available on free transfers at the end of their current contracts , Is the best way to prevent this happening by adding appearance conditions which automatically trigger contract extensions ?

What if we deem the player surplus to requirements and want to release on a free when their contracts up ?

Isn't this ' Hammondesque ' in principal ??

I read it as it triggers the option for us not automatically extends the contract

Sounds ok, as long as it doesn't stop us bringing in players who say, fuck off I'm not having that, when of course we are in the championship

New approach to contracts is surely not to give players with an injury record a deal where they have the option to extend it regardless of how often they have played.

Yeah , I've just re - read the article and that does appear to be what he's saying .

Fair play CW . Whilst contract negotiations with new players may be become very convoluted and potentially very time consuming , the moves do benefit the club .

They aren't without difficulties though . Imagine the scene towards the end of the season when CW lines Sharp , Coutts , Basham , Freeman and Done up and asks all of those there to step forward if they are staying at the club for another 3 years . All step forward and CW says " oi done , what thar doin " :D:D

I wantthe best players, sometimes we cannont dictate this is what you will get accept it or you will not play for us, i understand London your thinking, but if that stops us progressing next season and thereafter than so be it.

Good. No worries about losing Coutts then.

As long as contracts are always in the club's control, and as long as there are no ridiculous clauses, that's OK.

Also a good idea to put promotion bonuses in them, as I believe we have.

It's about attitude isn't it. Train well, have the right attitude, get in the team, play well stay in the team and there is bread on the table..

Suck your lollipop, prance about on West St, toss about on a Segway, not bother trying after your loan spell, get out on the ale and be a disruption will mean the new Porsche may have to wait a while...

A means to get the attitude right and it seems to be playing a part in making a team that's bothered..

Good one Chris!

I'm missing what CW's new approach is. Done/Sharp/Coutts et al. were signed before he arrived so extra years based on games played isn't Wilders idea. To me it read as if he doesn't like having convoluted contracts and wants to get rid of all the 'optional extras' and simplify everything down to a basic contract.

We all know the Board make all the decisions and do all the deals - don't we??;)

So as effective as he is, the reason Done keeps getting a game is because of a clause in his contract!?

This doesn't seem like the strangest move by a shrewd manager walking into a club with a recent history of the most confusing and poorly designed contractual clauses of all time.

"I’m never going to leave anybody out, unless it’s a ridiculous contract that hurts the club financially.”

That suggests to me that wilder would leave someone out not to trigger their clause if he didn't feel the were worth it, I can't see him being held to ransom on anyone's contract

And this is why CW needed time when he was getting criticised by some at the beginning of the season.

He isn't here to just change the team. He's here to change the whole ethos of the club and everyone surely appreciates this cannot be done overnight

He's here, he's sorting the squad, training, tactics, attitude, mentality

Behind the scenes, he's sorting the clubs approach, train of thought and at the same time I assume sticking within budget, thus helping to maintain the club on a fairly sound financial footing.

Let's hope he, his staff, the players, the club and us fans get our just reward come the end of the season

The way i read this is that the appearance related contract extensions are in facour of the players in question and not the club. The contract will state that if x player make y appearances during season z, then another year contract option is triggered. It is addes security for the player and will have been used as a carrot by the club when the players were signed initially.

CW was basically stating that he would not not pick a player even if it meant triggering said option, unless it was financially a killer for the club to have x player having another year on probably the same existing terms / decent contract with probably a percentage increase built in. He was stating that he expects all first team players to be challenging for a first team place and not have them almost 'rewarded' for basically doing their job i.e. playing well enough to get themselves picked. They get paid very well to do that anyway.

Hes trying to strip out the silly clauses in players contracts so that the club has a clearer picture at any one time of who is here next season (barring unforseen circumstances) and who isnt.

The appearances triggering extensions deal in facour of the players isnt ideal for the club as potentially (and im not saying any players are doing this) you could get a player playing out of his skin first half of this season to trigger the extension as hes getting picked, before he then thinks 'fuk it im on easy street now and isnt quite as intense in his performances'. Anyone who thinks some players arent like that...i present you with 'Ryan Flynn'. The perfect example of someone who played like a demon to win himself a contract, then went shit for the next 18 months thereafter.
