He does say he’d rather not have had to work through the divisions and suffer the shit experiences of selling houses and not having enough money, so it’s hardly a massive stretch of a headline to say he’s jealous.
They also included his positive comments on Lampard too, so it’s not taking comments out of context in order to credit a controversial article.
It’s just a throw away few words to fill a column and cover off a match they aren’t really overly interested in, and wouldn’t be at all if Lampard wasn’t in one of the dugouts.

Football is meritocratic, if you’re a shit manager, if you’re not competent, you don’t last very long. And before anyone starts listing managers they think are shit, you’re mistaking ‘averageness’ with shitness. There are plenty of competent but mediocre managers around but the industry is far too competitive for incapable managers to survive long. Not even if you’re called ‘Gary Neville’.

Guardiola’s job is to manage highly talented and extremely wealthy individuals with big egos, he does that as well as anyone on the planet, whether he could manage a bunch of journeyman doesn’t matter at all.

Not exactly true. Guardiola spent virtually all of his life as a footballer at Barcelona, he played the Oliver Norwood role - and then started off by coaching their "B" team, in his first year they won their League. He was groomed to that position and took his coaching badges at an early age.

If I were him I probably would be. It's alright seeing a long trail of cause and effect leading to his current position, but I'll bet he believes he's always had it in him and he will have personal belief that had he been parachuted in to a top job with some money to spend, he could have been successful without having to gain experience doing all the shitty jobs along the way. He will look at them as years of his life he could have been doing something better - particularly if it was a difficult and unpleasant time.

I agree, but I know from personal experience that it isn't always much consolation to hear "all those years of shit paid off eventually". Especially when you see someone else getting the good stuff without it.

And even if that wasn’t the case, so what? The hypothetical theory that he couldn’t manage a lower league club doesn’t detract from what he’s actually achieved.

Football is meritocratic, if you’re a shit manager, if you’re not competent, you don’t last very long. And before anyone starts listing managers they think are shit, you’re mistaking ‘averageness’ with shitness. There are plenty of competent but mediocre managers around but the industry is far too competitive for incapable managers to survive long. Not even if you’re called ‘Gary Neville’.

Guardiola’s job is to manage highly talented and extremely wealthy individuals with big egos, he does that as well as anyone on the planet, whether he could manage a bunch of journeyman doesn’t matter at all.

Football is one of the least meritocratic professions in existence, it's nepotistic in the extreme.

His job is to motivate the players and keep their egos in check. He surrounds himself with a back room team to work out the nitty gritty, and he sprinkles sugar on it to make it acceptable to the players. He's never been in a position to be really tested, and has had the comfort of either world class players or billions of pounds to act as a safety net for any shortcomings.

He should be described as a very good 'big club manager', as opposed to the best manager in the world.

He does say he’d rather not have had to work through the divisions and suffer the shit experiences of selling houses and not having enough money, so it’s hardly a massive stretch of a headline to say he’s jealous.
They also included his positive comments on Lampard too, so it’s not taking comments out of context in order to credit a controversial article.
It’s just a throw away few words to fill a column and cover off a match they aren’t really overly interested in, and wouldn’t be at all if Lampard wasn’t in one of the dugouts.

Not exactly true. Guardiola spent virtually all of his life as a footballer at Barcelona, he played the Oliver Norwood role - and then started off by coaching their "B" team, in his first year they won their League. He was groomed to that position and took his coaching badges at an early age.
