McCabe "Look lads we can't pay you any more in wages but would you accept a box of half and half scarfs instead?"

Can't view embedded tweets at work, what's he saying?

The tweets are:
  • Clean bill of health for Villa game
  • The contract talks which have been spoken about recently are now with players / player reps and the board (the way Giddings words this makes it seem as though Wilder is a bit p*ssed off about this and he's just left it to them to sort out, but definitely doesn't sound the case)

Random question for the day. In the SUFC company org chart, who is the first person who reports to both McCabe and the Andrex merchant?

That’s a job I’d really not fancy.

Nothing, again, on the future of Coutts.

Bearing in mind it’s February, not looking promising :(.

Chap sits next to me in the Westfield said that he heard Coutts deal wasn't being renewed/extended and he will leave in the Summer..

Coutts' name was conspicuous by its absence when Wilder was talking about contacts at the end. He's clearly not at the same level are his injury and that's a real shame. However, there are 16 games to go for him to show he deserves a new deal so I very much doubt any decision has been taken yet.

16 ‘Cup finals’ though, to use a tired cliche. Our midfield will be Norwood, Fleck and Duffy, with Dowell contributing. Unless Norwood gets injured or needs resting his opportunities will be very limited.

His best bet is Norwood serving a ban for 10 yellows which is quite likely, he's a couple away and gets booked quite regularly.

When Coutts got injured last November, I was surprised to the extent we missed him. This wasn't a slight on him, the opposite, it was testament to what a crucial player he was. Fast forward a year and his staggered comeback had little to no impact due to the signing of Norwood, and it would seem, the overall development of the team as a whole. So is it that we are much stronger and left Coutts behind, is he not the player that he once was or simply a combination of the two. Regardless, it does indicate the speed with which Wilder is moving this squad on and the progress made, just a shame Coutts is unlikely to figure as a pivotal figure again.

This. 100% this. Wilder's always said there's no place for sentiment, so I'd assume he won't offer Couttsy a new deal for what he once brought to the club, unless he feels he can be part of the squad's progression going forward. He'll get the fondest of farewells if he does go, but there isn't any room for passengers.

Another excellent interview with CW.

Although there was no mention of Coutts, I'd say it was no more complicated than the journalist didn't ask about the player, so Wilder didn't feel the need to comment, period. Whatever the future holds, Wilder will know what a fit and in-form Coutts means to this club, so I doubt he's making any decisions just yet, at least not until CW is sure in his own mind that Coutts can/cannot bring something worthwhile to Wilder's team. All I'd add is that supporter's should resist the temptation from writing Coutts off just yet. All will become clear as the season draws to an end.

As I've come to expect from CW, he offers concise and straightforward replies to whatever he's asked by any journalist. We're in good shape, and Friday's game is just another in the latest step towards securing promotion. Every one of the players selected will know what they have to do, so here's to a good performance and three more points in the bank. UTMB!

Makes sense, do you think it's more the squad getting better or Coutts not as good as before; or an even mix of both?

Would you take a point now?

I think it’s a bit of both. When he’s at the races, Norwood is untouchable, perhaps the best in the Championship. Couttsy’s cameos this season have shown that he’s a) not nearly at the level he was pre-injury (completely understandable) and b) not nearly at the level we’ve come to expect from Norwood. I would have liked to see Coutts loaned out in January to get him up to speed, and take it from there. Perhaps Wilder sees him as still having a role to play here this season though.

I don't get at least not putting a year with possible extension on the table, unless I'm mistaken he's still everybody's favourite to come in should one of the midfielders get injured or suspended and Dowell even if he were to stay beyond the end of the season has yet to prove himself.

I was on holiday in Rhodes when we played them at The Lane and I asked a lass wearing a Villa shirt the same question.

She said "no way, we should wipe the floor with you lot"

That turned out well for her didn't it :)

I can see Coutts being offered a 1 year deal at the end of the season if we stay in the Championship but not if promoted. Seemingly, there hasn’t been a decision to make yet as no club appears to have enquired about him, so I don’t see why we’d offer a new deal at the moment. Such a shame for Coutts, but that’s unfortunately the risk with football.

Seems Mr Coutts may be under contract till June 2020 :)

Can anybody confirm ???

I thought so too but I can't confirm.

Bearing in mind he's yet to prove himself again after injury, if he does have another year left after this season, why would you offer an extension at this point anyway.

Nah, it’s up this summer. Signed the same length as Sharp & Basham, and you would imagine no automatic extension of a year has been triggered as he hasn’t played the 23 games required for that to activate. Freeman the only one of these to sign a 3 year deal, as indicated by the jazzier pen.
