Disagree that Adkins spoke well, he hardly said anything interesting despite going on for ever, seemingly very afraid to reveal things about his philosophy. Clough may have sounded dour, but I enjoyed a lot of his interviews. There were things said between the lines which revealed stuff, although interviewers often didn't pick up on it. Despite some real weaknesses, Clough was and is a real football man, whereas Adkins was more like an average motivational speaker. Wilder is a straight talker, willing to share things, showing confidence in his philosophy. Compared to Clough he seems to think a more attack-minded approach can be used, and he's more clear on which player types are needed to get the balance right for his sides.
Agreed, Adkins interviews were turgid, and Clough much more honest. However, in perspective, one damaged your ears for a few minutes a week, the other the finances of the club for years to come.

Clough always sounded (to me) like he was 5 minutes away from a nervous breakdown. On the other hand Adkins spouted the kind of middle management bollocks i've heard throughout my career; it just goes in one ear and out of the other.

Agreed. However, of 17 players released / listed, 2 of them are Adkins' players. The damage done by Clough is in a different league.

It goes without saying as Adkins didn't bring many in (and even the lamentable Sammon wasn't his doing). Whatever people think about Adkins the manager, he was working with his hands tied behind his back given the bloated squad of crap he inherited.

Wants to get Brayford back to his level while on loan.

Which was - what - 24-26 months ago? (The memorable Charlton match was Mar. 9, 2014). So it's becoming apparent that CW, while performing as a successful manager elsewhere, constantly had/has his ear to the ground. Adkins, on the other hand, suffered from being out of the loop for a few months, lost contacts etc. Everything about CW so far is good news. Even...
Pretty easy to be decisive when a lot of the squad are out of contract. Adkins did a fair job at offloading a lot players last season even if they did end up going out on loan.

Just because he has stuck a couple of extra players on the transfer list doesn't mean they will leave any quicker.

'A couple of extra players?' CW joined us on 12 May. Eight days later, three players - Edgar, Sammon and Baptiste had left the club following their loan deals.

Ten players - Mark Howard, Bob Harris, Callum McFadzean, Terry Kennedy, Harrison McGahey, Jay McEveley, Florent Cuvelier, Ryan Flynn, Jose Baxter and Jamal Campbell-Ryce - had been released.

And seven players - Kieron Freeman, Kieran Wallace, James Wallace, Dean Hammond, Paul Coutts, Martyn Woolford and Diego De Girolamo - had been transfer-listed. Link

He's also signed two new players. That's 'hitting the ground running'. He's only been here three weeks! None of the Adkins' 'clean sheet' bollocks.

Few snippets so far:

Said he has loved it so far and thankful for all comments. Says he has met the Prince. Says impression he has of the Prince and McCabe (and his sons) are together. Said he was not sure from bits he had seen/heard but he has met them both together and was very impressed

Understands pressures and what it comes with from his SUFC connections but proud of his work in football but says he know the club inside and out and knew most of staff

Says he likes forward players we have. Mentioned Done, Adams, Sharp (best striker in the division he says), McNulty, Scougall (not sure why he mentioned him as a forward) but says one thing they are missing is a physical presence and someone they can hit if a defence goes deep....says he is moving ahead with such a player and has spoken to two players

Says Adams can play down middle sometimes and then wide left or right. A lot of work to be done with him but feels he can be taken to next level but needs to work hard

Says previous managed wanted to list Scougall and McNulty but he wants a look at them

Given Long till after the weekend - spoke to him yesterday. Contract offer there. Says he is speaking to parents/family. Inference is that CW is already looking elsewhere but says he wants to keep him. I am guessing Long may be leaving from Wilder's comments today as discussed money/contracts etc. Could be wrong. Wilder says he had a back up plan if he goes

Asked about Northampton players and any he may take. Says will look and identify players and knows a couple from them having worked with them but says he is looking at a load of players and a lot of work ongoing

Says he needs to change his number as he has been bombarded with calls from agents/clubs since he became SUFC manager

In process of appointing a chief scout to help him

Surprised at Hammond contract - heavily weighted in players favour - says he wants situation resolved sooner and looking at potential resolution and it could be that he is either paid up or loaned out for the remainder of his contract. He says his style does not suit way CW wants to play. Says he wants players to press and go and be high up the field. Praised Hammond for his career but says he is not his style of player.

Wants to play in a way that gets supporters off the feet and alluded to positive, forward thinking and winning football. Talked about both boxes but also how he wants to press teams and go after teams. Kept saying going after teams and getting them under pressure.

The new WHF al la Wilder

Like the look of Mcdonald. Tall, the right age and a pretty good recent goalscoring record for a centre back !!!

Mentioned this guy before. Tufty will be looking for a left sided CB like McDonald. Unfortunately will cost though so that might bring Pierre into play from Wycombe who is also left footed

Really feel the need to ask pinchy a couple of things here, I would usually just skim over his trolling bait posts but...

could you point out the posts on here that say they don't want us to play football? I can't recall having ever actually read any. The constant, bizarre berating of people who liked Bassett is just really odd, you are the only one talking about him.

Bergen's posts are 1million percent more interesting than your dribble, strange you want managers to play football but then you don't believe in tactics, sending players out and telling them to "just play football" I'd surely a recipe for kick and rush, long ball desperation, the kind you apparently hate.

Pierre has got another year on his contract and Wycombe were looking for £350k.

Hang on, this goes against your use of the ignore button all last season!

Just you and a couple of others but a clean sheet since the end of the season and I reckon you are "in a better place" these days.:). Time is at a premium so there has to be some filtering surely.

New managers always talk a good game and it's a honeymoon period. Actions speak louder than words but Wilder talks loads and loads of common sense and that's a rare commodity. Every aspect of this interview is covered with believable answers and logical, realistic answers from a man who has done his trips round the block for years and years; he knows players and he knows the game.

Good post Bergen and well put. Adkins would have never got it right , and McCabe let him go to mitigate risk and further damage IMO . Adkins interviews were poor and it seemed to me on the same level as the MD of BHS taking over the NHS , knowing nothing about business and / or patient care .

Adkins communication was very poor , so we can only speculate what it was actually like with the players . Adkins did not appear to know what he was doing and even at the level of a shyster .

Clough was open and perhaps too open with the comments he made about certain players , which on hindsight is all justified . The bloke perhaps did know what he was doing but a bolshy twat.

Wilder explains in simple terms his vision , tactics and that awful word pathway .

We have a breath of fresh air with Wilder and to me his aim is winning football , whichever way we do it and will change tactics / formation depending who we are playing and how the game is going .

We have to embrace this bloke , as finally we have someone who understands what you need and what you have to do to get out of league 1 .

Also I understand and up to press agree with everything he says .

You've never understood a word of them, so how the hell would you know?

Unlike you I've been very positive about Wilder's appointment from day one. Finally we have a manager looking to play modern, effective, attacking and entertaining football. From researching and reading about his merits and listening to his interviews his football philosophy seems to be similar to what I'd like to see. I've agreed with and praised pretty much all his decisions so far.

Terminology isn't that important. I don't want any Blades players to be poor at something either. It's a huge advantage if they are complete players. Sometimes you have to make compromises, and sometimes certain roles will be restricted if it helps a team achieve the optimal balance. N'Golo Kante had a fantastic season at Leicester, but he scored only once and didn't bomb into the opposition box as often as a lot of other midfielders. He has been rightly compared to Claudio Makelele, the Sergio Busquet has scored twice in 83 apps for Spain. He has scored 6 goals in 247 Barcelona appearances. This is a worse scoring record than Nick Montgomery's for us. He does not go forward a lot. This shows that what is popularly called "holding"/"defensive" midfielders do exist and they can be a part of successful sides.

In today's interview Wilder's quote on central midfielders was:

Looking at how Northampton played last season, it was 4-2-3-1 most of the time. When I watched them their two central midfielders were competitive and hard working, yet useful on the ball. It is no surprise to me that the likes of Hammond, Baxter, Coutts are unwanted as they aren't suited to Wilder's philosophy of a energetic high pressing game. Adkins didn't realise this and foolishly even played them all at the same time. It will be different under Wilder. Basham, for his fitness and energy, may be kept around, but long term I don't expect him to remain a first choice, as he's rather limited in possession. Whiteman may have a chance, but I expect a couple of midfield signings to arrive before the season starts.

Loving the heaps of Scandanavian Scorn, so eloquently delivered. :D

Perversely, I quite enjoy Pinchers antagonistic prods, on the whole, but he seems to be cranking it up a level at the moment and I am not surprised that the latest tirade of trash got the full, unadulterated thrashing it deserved.

the difference is one knows what he's talking about the other thinks he knows what he's talking about.

One of those blokes who is never wrong, I've met quite a few like that in my time, usually a stubborn old bastard who was possibly once well respected but is now sat in the corner of a pub with half a bitter spouting irrelevant shite about bill shankly

If he's scoring at that rate from CH, then a small fee shouldn't but a problem

2 quotes there that for me, sum up a lot of what is wrong at our club. We change manager every year and with that, we change chief scout and the type of players we want to build a team around. Meanwhile we are left with contracted professionals that whilst doing well elsewhere, don't fit into the manager's plans. We need to do one of the following to resolve this

1. Keep managers in post for a sufficient period that most of their players don't outstay them.
2. Create a recrtuitment strategy independent from the manager. This means having people on the board and scouting staff in place identify style of play, attributes required to fulfil that style etc. making the manager job more of a head-coach role.
3. (the one we're doing)- keep chopping and changing and just hope we luckily stumble on a players/manager combo that gets us up.

Who at the club is capable of implementing either strategy? Which is the crux of the problem.

Been saying this for ages. You make your own 'luck'. Which is why it's so fucking frustrating when our board members talk about how unlucky we've been.

Who at the club is capable of implementing either strategy? Which is the crux of the problem.

Well, I'm not on the board so my advice would be; get qualified as a surveyor, get a job with one of KM's property companies and work your way up. If you can demonstrate you can put together an asset management plan and carry out a development appraisal on an out of town industrial estate, the job's yours.

I see. That seems quite a bit of work actually.

Instead, I'll send an e-mail mentioning that I'm quite good on Football Manager and after deciding to leave my researcher role I'm looking for a new challenge... then wait for my imminent job offer.

I have bought a season ticket that will go unused mate. I'm a Blade of over 50 years long-suffering and they can gladly have the dosh but I won't be participating in the one season under Wilder any more than I would under another Bladey favourite like Morgan. I saw Wilder's Oxford team a few times. They were functional at best without any style or flair. He was on the verge of the sack there on a number of occasions and his departure was not mourned by anyone. They now play far better football. Appleton IN! No doubt Wilder had a good season with Northampton but it's been a fucking long time coming and its Division Four, for Pele's sake. From what I've seen of them, there ain't much football there, either. You can say it's been effective but one season does not make a manager and his overall record is completely underwhelming. He's no young up and comer as some people kid themselves, but rather a seasoned mediocrity who has had more than long enough to prove where he belongs. He has and it's Non-League and Division Four.

Adkins has had a very poor season. His CV suggests, however, that he would have turned it round next year. This policy of giving managers one shot or you're out is football lunacy. It's crazy, costs a fortune and is self-perpetuating.

I see nothing whatsoever in Wilder to give me any confidence that my time won't be better spent bringing down my handicap. It's a cheap option, entirely lacking in ambition and calculated to appease the simple-minded section of our support to whom "He's a Blade" is more important than ability and achievement. Remember Quickfix Micky Adams?

It's an appalling appointment, made for all the wrong reasons, and I want nothing to do with it. I'm sure you can all manage without me for a year...:)

Thank you for taking the trouble to compile that.

I very much like what I'm hearing about the need for a physical striker and the peremptory dismissal of the 'defensive midfielder'. Funnily enough, two things I've argued consistently. Nice to know that our splendid new manager agrees with me rather more than most on here...

Bergen Blade, Bergen Blade, are you listening...your tactical theories took a hell of a beating...:)

So you now agree that slagging off managers just because they have previous connections to United and/or Bassett is pretty chuffing stupid?

No. I subject all opinions, including my own, to critical analysis and continuing review. I don't accept that Tufty has a good record in management. Overall, It looks decidedly mediocre to me. However, his work at Northampton over the last two seasons is greatly to his credit. What has impressed me is what he's done since his arrival. I don't hold previous connections with us against him. I simply say, and will always say, that it's not a bonus. It doesn't gain you a single point. Ask Quickfix Mickey. Some people would appoint managers solely on sentiment. There have been plenty of calls for Morgan and Deane in the past on that basis alone. It certainly can't be because of any aptitude for management.

I would still very much prefer that he didn't consult old Diplodocus Dave, but that's his call. If he takes DD's advice on technical or stylistic matters, as opposed to more general issues, he will fail.

Yes, I have noticed how often your simplistic opinions have had to change once subjected to critical analysis and continuing review.
