S2 Born & Bred...
Just reading about the final days as Keegan in club management.
Those who remember his time at Newcastle United remember a man who was believed would bring the good times back, a gaffer with excellent man management skills, who wasn't afraid to call the shots and make changes to get what he wanted. Although not a Geordie, he had worn the black & white, and was thought to be one of their own by fans who though he could walk on water - or at least part the Tyne to cross it.
And to an extent - it worked. Promotion from 3rd to top level, the big 4 being turned over in fine style, and and producing gung-ho swashbuckling performances which delighted the fans and saw them become possible contenders. However, as the pressures got to him, performances suffered, fans turned and his reputation slipped. A 20 point lead surrendered when the Premiership was there for the taking, the meltdown on live tv as Fergie's mind games worked, and then when it got to the point where he felt he couldn't do much more... he walked away, falling on his own sword.
20 plus years later, there are certain similarities with our own Chris Wilder and the position he finds himself in now. But will our Chris fall on his own blade, or wait for it to be applied by those in higher authority? The next few weeks or so are set to be very interesting to say the least.
