They're in free fall not guaranteed to be straight back up. Parachute payments will have finished now won't they? Totally different scenario to wolves a few years back. More similar to the Portsmouth relegation to this league.

We've dropped a bollock missing out on O'Donnell. Wigan are nailed-on to go straight back up.

Depends on there back four . Howard i believe , would have given the same return in clean sheets , as ODonnell last season , if we had one.

Not too fussed. Now if it was a CB they had just signed , that is a different matter , and would be 1-0 to Wigan . At the moment its 0-0.

O'Donnell is the best Goalie in the division. I'd rather have the best than ok or pretty good.

I disagree about Wigan, I think they'll comfortably win this league.

Rooky new chairman , Rooky new manager . No experience . On Free Fall . Championship / Premiership a dream .

They will walk this league:D

Care to have a bet? Wigan go up through autos and you donate £10 to a local charity. They don't, and then I will?

Couldn't agree more with the original post. Wigan sure have got their priorities right and Gary Caldwell's only just become a manager late last season.

Very strongly disagree with OP.

We do not need a new (first choice) keeper. Buying one would be a total waste of our limited money.

We have finite resources and we should allocate them where our needs are greatest.

He was free

"I'm delighted Richard has agreed to join us. He was definitely one of the best keepers in League One last season,"

Doing a Wolves. Sign the division's best players, win the league and leave the sidewards moving 5th year losers behind.

Wigan will struggle to get in the play offs IMO ,never mind get in the auto spots .

Robbie , i cannot see Wigan making it . Wolves bought there way out of League 1. They may underestimate how hard it is to get out of this league . The gates will be low and no real income coming into the club. It depends how much Dave Whelan Bank rolls them .

Play offs at the best for Wigan.

The surprise packages will be the teams up from league 2.

Preston will be a force if they don't make it today , but Grayson may call it a day and move on.

Our first mistake was not sacking Clough before the players had got off the pitch at Swindon.

ps, I don't think our extensive scouting network has reached much further south than Derby yet.

A new first choice keeper is vital. I will be absolutely gutted if we start next season with Howard in the net.
He was suffering a bad back injury which limited his mobility.
Why didn't Clough address this I haven't got the answer.
He did well last season and up to the injury
Clough will monitor pre season then make the decision

It is hard to criticize him in someways. The problem hasn't been massive howlers, it is that, for me anyway, he is consistently average. How many high-looping shots has he missed? How many placed wide shots has he not collected?

You see a bending shot sail past his hand into the corner toward the end of a game and chalk up another loss, a different keeper you'd maybe say "very unlucky, on a different day the keeper would have got his hand on that and kept us in the game", but it feels like Howard never does! (and at this moment in time, it feels like he'll always be a finger-tip away from saving those shots!). These are not bread and butter shots, they are difficult saves (I do appreciate that), and of course, if he was saving them all he'd be playing for Man City or Chelsea (etc) not keeping net for a Division 3 team, but, you expect your keeper to occasionally pull off a great save and be the difference maker.

Penalties aside (credit where its due, he does get his hand on a fair share of penalties), he never seems to pull off the spectacular. I know some of this comes down to form and also luck, and I'd love to be sat here in a year's time eating my words. I just think the sample size is now big enough where we have to say that it's time to take a chance on someone else starting between the sticks.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's unlucky in a sense because goalie has probably been our most consistent position over the years (and even decades) and anyone who doesn't come in and hit the ground running is going to get stick. For what its worth, I'm not blaming him for this season. It isn't personal. I think as a number 2 he'd be a good servant to the club (and okay backup). As a number one? not for me.

the 3 relegated from the championship last season Barnsley Doncaster and Yeovil didnt set league one on fire finishing 11th 14th and 24th
and you could argue the 3 thats come down this time arent as good

Even if this is true, there's a difference between we *could* do with a better player in any given position and we *should* allocate a significant proportion of our limited resources to that position.

We can improve in every position but imo there are much higher priorities.

For me far and away the best way to improve the keeper is to support him as fans and as a club To be fair to Clough he's done that.

If anything, Howard takes too much blame. At least twice in the run in he's "held his hands up" and apologised for a goal that I'm not.totally convinced was his fault. That comes across to me as a worrying lack of self-confidence.

We can improve the keeper without spending any money.

I know what you're saying let's see how we go pre season then the injury will have panned out take it from there if it dos'nt work out then I'm in your corner

No Brayford til the new year
Baxter on a ban until Christmas
Wallace still has grommets in his ears and legs
Howard's got a bad back - does that really clear up?
Done may not be fit for the new season either
Higdon - is he still breathing?
Scougs hardly played last and screwed a hammy penultimate game.
McEvely signed for another year

That's 8 doubts already.

If Nigel doesn't strengthen the centre back situation as a priority (and I'm not taking Shaun Barker) add a strong centre mid who can run all day and head the ball and tackle and pass it and if he doesn't get in another CF (would prefer Davies to COG) in time for a good pre season then nothing will have been learned from this one just gone.

However, I have every confidence he'll sort it and we will steam roller this division next season. I think

Maybe

We'll see.......

It might happen

Yeah, I think having an ok keeper who can't kick, dodgy on crosses, doesn't command his area, doesn't talk enough, but who might improve in the pre-season is much better than signing the best keeper in the league for free....
