It is hard to criticize him in someways. The problem hasn't been massive howlers, it is that, for me anyway, he is consistently average. How many high-looping shots has he missed? How many placed wide shots has he not collected?
You see a bending shot sail past his hand into the corner toward the end of a game and chalk up another loss, a different keeper you'd maybe say "very unlucky, on a different day the keeper would have got his hand on that and kept us in the game", but it feels like Howard never does! (and at this moment in time, it feels like he'll always be a finger-tip away from saving those shots!). These are not bread and butter shots, they are difficult saves (I do appreciate that), and of course, if he was saving them all he'd be playing for Man City or Chelsea (etc) not keeping net for a Division 3 team, but, you expect your keeper to occasionally pull off a great save and be the difference maker.
Penalties aside (credit where its due, he does get his hand on a fair share of penalties), he never seems to pull off the spectacular. I know some of this comes down to form and also luck, and I'd love to be sat here in a year's time eating my words. I just think the sample size is now big enough where we have to say that it's time to take a chance on someone else starting between the sticks.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's unlucky in a sense because goalie has probably been our most consistent position over the years (and even decades) and anyone who doesn't come in and hit the ground running is going to get stick. For what its worth, I'm not blaming him for this season. It isn't personal. I think as a number 2 he'd be a good servant to the club (and okay backup). As a number one? not for me.
