Thread title is an open goal for the haters but anyway...

Adkins has persisted with Jay and strongly supported him in public very recently.

From this it might be a surprise to see him subbed due to a lack of form or supposed lack of ability.

It may be that Adkins thought McEveley was having a poor game.

(Fwiw as always, for me, McEveley was a mixture of good and bad: the foul for the booking was unnecessary and almost desperate, but there were the usual decent forward passes, and I even saw him encouraging team-mates.)

Otoh the substitution may have been for a different reason eg Alcock, who played very well when he came on imo, is better suited to the LB role in a 4-3-3.

Or injury. Was McEveley on the bench second half?

Maybe Adkins is reconsidering Jay's role, or maybe it was tactical, or maybe it was injury.

Down to the booking I reckon and I assume he will be back in the first team at the weekend.

Sheffield United: Adkins warns defence - Tighten up or I’ll replace you!
“We’ve got to cut down on the number of goals we are letting in, that’s for sure,” Adkins said. “It’s too many, simple. We’ll keep working hard with the players we’ve got and, if we can’t improve it in-house, then we’ll have to go out-of-house as it were."

We have virtually the worst defensive record in the division, it can't continue, it's a warning to all of them. And quite right too, he's had enough given the last three performances.

Adkins and us supporters should expect some improvement for the Doncaster game (they have scored 4 all season). If not some are for the chop.

On a booking, up against a tricky winger...surely a no-brainer?!

But he was booked very early on. At the time I wondered if he would last the first half as it was a waste of a booking.

May have been the reason. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if it was fresh legs for the 4-3-3.

Nige says it was tactical.

Yep, he was quick to get that point in before even being asked about it too. I was surprised, but pleased.

Given Alcock put in a good shift on Saturday (and at Fulham) what would McEveley critics say to keeping Alcock & Freeman as the full-backs for Saturday?

Was this in the FH interview?

To me it was definitely tactical , no other reason . We could finish up playing to the strengths we have , and play a differant formation and players , home and away. Nothing to lose and everything to gain after 1 point from 9.

Alcock and Freeman for me Saturday .

Doncaster will not be a walkover on Saturday and could be a cagy game against two average sides.

I thought we were getting someone in anyway?

I said at the time that it would have been the booking but if Nige says tactical then I'll go with that. Thought Alcock was excellent as were all the subs.
As for it being McEv's performance I hardly think I'll make any friends by saying what I believe which is that I'd have taken Freeman off before McEv. Freeman didn't get involved enough to get booked or misplace a pass but people seem to love him, although defensively I can't see why.

So that just shows he needs to use what we've got, what's makes anyone think they will just improve? The players aren't good enough simple as. Oh and as for we'll have to go out of house, not going to happen unless there are good defenders on a free that want to play for free.

Anyone heard from Jim lately he's a bit quiet.

I thought Sammon changed the game just as much as Baxter did.
Maybe Jay did get taken off to suit a 4-3-3, I'm glad Mcnulty got a start but the ball just wasn't sticking up top and with the wingers playing far too narrow we just didn't have an out ball. Sammon has had a few off games and he's never getting you 15-20 goals a season but he's a handful and will be the perfect spearhead of a front three.

Surprised that Adkins said the change was tactical. I presumed it was because he had been booked and looked certain to be sent off. Be great to see Kennedy involved on Saturday.

Tbf Roy, i'd say that is part of the tactical department in footballing terms, that's how i took it anyway :)

This, IMO, is one of the reasons I believe we're seemingly struggling at present. Other than the obvious centre half problem, we have problems at full back (both sides). McEveley is second choice left back (after whispering Bob of course, and another reason I can't understand why Jay was made club captain). The current argument is that we should be replacing our current second choice left back with our 3rd choice... That in itself is an issue.

The other side to be fair ain't doing too bad! The Beard is going to have to play out of his skin to get his place back from Freeman IMO. I wasn't overly impressed with his initial signing, but he has been our most consistent & one of the more impressive performers of the season. I'm not a fan of Brayford a centre half & feel he's much better utilised at right back, but that'll be a nice headache to have once he's back fit! Also throw Flynn into the mix who was very good when asked to play there last season & I think that once everyone is fit, we'll be fine!

I thought the club had said we were reinvesting the Murphy money

The Club (Jimbo) said "100% of the money is available"

We just need 50lbs of Gelignite to get it out of McCabes grasp ..............

I personally think it is in Nigeria now
