Why So Negative

'Walk round the lump'! I've not heard that phrase for a long time. Curious. Is it a metaphor or in my case an area of grass land in an housing estate where I used to live.

I have used it as reference to a walk round block as you say old saying, I only use now and then

I think the worst times in the past 50 years have been our two spells in the 3rd division (recently called League 1).

In the first of those we filled our team with 3rd division players to save money. And we ended up with has beens and journeymen who took us to the depths.

In the second of those we gave the job to a succession of clueless managers, many of whom had never managed before, and expected them to have the guile to get us out of that mess.

I enjoyed the old 4th division immensely. A good manager in Porterfield who was given funds and allowed to assemble a very enterprising attacking football team and got hold of the division by the scruff of the neck.

There’s a moral to this story.

An excellent post oh yes we had some reight journeymen one last pay day, Porterfield was okay bless him RIP I remember being stood on kop as Givens took pen against Walsall their GK had time to go for a shit, shave, and a haircut bump 4th division here we come. Like you I was probably one of the poor souls that was on kop for us v Port Vale under Heath truly shocking football, I've been in Lane when 49k there and 6.5k-7.5k for league game sure you will have too Pete.

Maidenhead have never been in the league but they have already won at Stockport and Torquay this season and drawn at home with Chesterfield and lost to Hartlepool.

That's four ex league teams in their first four games which seems bizarre to me having seen them play the likes of Hampton and Richmond, Bromley, Basingstoke etc whilst in a lower league than Slough and their big local rivals Marlow

I'm thinking Maidstone. Cheers

As a younger fan than many (I'm 33) I've often felt in the last few years that lots of older blades have the idea of us as a "muck and nettles, working class, agricultural, plucky, hard-working (insert other such descriptions here)" team ingrained in their identity as fans.

That's fine, and it certainly describes how we have been for many years.

But times change. Football has changed, and we have finally changed with it. I've seen lows in my 25 years at the lane. I've been to all the playoff finals, cup semi finals and crushing relegation matches. I sat through the misery of 6 years in league 1. Now though, I am absolutely elated with where we are and how we've got here.

We will take some hammerings this season. Liverpool and Man City terrify me, regardless of how good we are. But we will also cause some shocks, and I'm convinced we will stay up relatively comfortably.

There is nothing to be negative about right now. We've evolved into something far greater than our historical image, and have the potential to keep evolving into something greater than we have ever been.

Feel nostalgic for how it used to be if you want to. There's nothing wrong with that at all. But also just enjoy where we are now, and where we may be going.

I was first taken to the Lane in 1971 by my dad when I three years old, so was spoilt right from the off with the manager and team.

I was there on boxing day and behind the net when Givens missed that penalty.

So have seen the lows and highs with Bassett and Warnock, now fast forward to the present day and there is just something different about today's team and management that I feel we haven't seen before.

There is a sense of confidence, you feel that CW and AK will always try to do the right thing and should we play badly or loose, you just know they will learn from any mistakes.

Long may it continue.

Ah. Where I lived there was an open green area in the estate. That was our 'lump'.
I recall my Dad directing me to take the Dog round the lump as a quick walk rather than a long one to the park.
I've walked round the lump many times!

Feel nostalgic for how it used to be if you want to. There's nothing wrong with that at all. But also just enjoy where we are now, and where we may be going.

That is absolutely fine also looking back is good as it reminds us just how far we've come, and yes we have to enjoy the here and now. I loved then team of early 70's and they were brilliant but, this team we are building has the potential to be better, I really hope we can push onwards and upwards.
