Why getting it wrong with Wilson and Clough shouldn’t save Adkins

I am someone who doesn't call for managers to be sacked. I don't know why, exactly. Probably a rarity in football fans. I think I see it as such a huge upheaval it is better to persist and give a manager more time, because the chances are he'll pull it round quicker than it would take for a new manager to get to grips with things - or just that the risk is too high that the new manager is worse. Either way, he's usually gone before I get that hacked off with someone I want him sacked.
It doesn't mean I think a manager's doing well. I can separate the two things. So I'm not calling for Adkins to be sacked, but I have to say I have never been less impressed. Even Robson didn't make me feel this pessimistic about the future. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there it is.
Same as the last several seasons, I have nothing but admiration for those who buy season tickets and go and watch the team every second week.

I think my biggest fears regarding any change in manager are a) yet another round of paying people off and b) my biggest fear of the two, the "everyone starts with a clean sheet" syndrome.

Whether it's Adkins or someone else, there needs to be big changes amongst the squad this summer.

Why - in an age where everything is videoed from every angle - does a manager give everyone a "clean slate"? You want a manager to hit the ground running, he should know which players aren't up for it, he should sit through every match video from the previous season, talk to the backroom staff, etc etc.
To be fair to Adkins, he was taking over a team that had done "reasonably" well the season before, but still, after a player has made a mess of his time at the club, why does he get a second chance to mess it up under a new manager?

I agree, I can only speculate and say it's some sort of code for "it's too expensive to get rid"?

You kidding? Travis Binnion is more suitable

It's not a hard question. But I can see I'm not going to get an answer. So be it.

You could just say 'I don't know'. Don't worry, nobody will hold it against you.

All kinds of stuff.

He made McNulty train with a jumper around his shoulders.

He insisted Scougall dressed as a schoolboy and made everyone call him Angus.

Diego kept finding his Range Rover on bricks every time Adkins' family came to visit.

He supplied Baxter with all his drugs.

He strapped Higdon to a table and force fed him like a veal calf.

He refused to be called Gaffer and insisted on being called Sir Nigel of Adkins.

Every Friday he came in wearing a wig and a false tache and would only respond to any question by saying 'di do dough, don't di dough'.

He made Reed and Whiteman train with the u-21s.

And he signed Hammond.

As I've said before, I don't doubt that NA would have sought the opinions of the backroom staff. The Clough fan club - the ones Clough used to build his dynasty - would have been pissed off with their benefactor being sacked. However, Morgs was still around. If he was asked about the setup, fitness levels and tactics he would probably have said to NA 'Absolutely fine, boss. Everything's in place.'

However, if he'd told the truth, Adkins would have been entitled to respond with 'So why the fuck didn't you say anything to Clough?'

He probably thought it better to keep schtum and slide off to Chesterfield. But this doesn't excuse Adkins' total unpreparedness when he first took over. You're right - it's all on video, fitness levels are monitored, stats are readily available (graphs are out there:D and, yes, he could have learned quite a bit by looking at this forum and the comments of those who pay good money to go home and away. Surely better than seeking advice from the very people who've got us in this shit in the first place?), so this 'everybody starts with a clean slate' is, basically, bollocks and has resulted in the utter waste of this season. It's the last refuge of the waffler, as are NA's interviews. He was appointed on June 2, 2015 and the first game/debacle was at Gillingham on 8th August. That's nine weeks with no forward planning or preparation done and the 4-0 result showed that. He 'hit the ground sinking'.

Will NA have learned and take a new change of approach into 2016-17? I see absolutely no signs that he will.

True, which really does make it incredibly frustrating.

If he had any idea at all he wouldn't have made McEveley captain for example.

You cant make 16 players leave who are almost all on the best screw of their careers. That's not to mention other outward loans which are being heavily subsidised..

Not sure Division 3 games are videoed from more than one angle except for when they're on the telly. (Are they?)

Imo Adkins did exactly the right thing for any number of reasons in assessing the squad. Can't believe it's even a discussion.

we haven't come from behind in one game to win
says everything you need to know.

Go on then. I am more than likely on ignore but please let me know maybe 5 of the any number of reasons to assess the squad.

1 no one wanted them
2 he didnt have any money to bring anyone in
3 its like watching an episode of faulty towers it makes you cringe and you beg for it to stop but you watch it over and over hoping for a different outcome
4 i fucking hate cats
5 tits

actually history shows after 6 years in the wilderness 79 to 85 we moved up back to the championship

I was quite clearly referring to the current board, what is the point in using an example from that far back in history to say it has any bearing on the shortcomings of our current board's managerial appointments?

I remember fans calling for warnocks head before he won promotion. It takes time. Weve had 5 years in this league, only one under Adkins lets give him some time ffs

i'd be sympathetic to Adkins but i don't trust his judgement.. mceveley captain?? obsession with hammond?? bringing billy off at OT?

Sack him and see how it turns out.

We have been sacking managers since we got relegated from the Premier League and its going well for us so far.

It's such a tempting job for a new manager to take on at the moment:

  • You will have little money to spend apart from perhaps a few loan deals as your predecessors spunked most of the money away
  • You will lose your best player if there is one in the squad
  • You will have to make do with the rest of the spineless twats that are here whether you like them or not
  • You won't have money to cancel the contracts early of the players you don't like
  • You can attempt to sell or loan out the players you don't want but you will be lucky to get any takers
  • You will have to put up with players doing a line of chop on a night out or getting their jaw broken in a nightclub
  • You will have to make sure your players don't end up on a night out in Rhyl
  • You may lose some players due to an FA ban or because they are going to prison
  • You can bring through youth players but it's hit or miss if they are ready
  • You will work under two owners who have different ways of thinking with regards to how the club is run
  • You will have one chairman that talks about being unlucky all of the time and won't accept responsiblity for their own poor decisions
  • You can't be too positive in interviews as that just doesn't wash with some people regardless of results
  • You must be promoted in your first season
  • You will not get chance to build a structure at the club for the future
