Has anyone else noticed this? We were potless in the days of NW as well and seldom spent a decent sum of money on a player in those days but when he fancied a particular player, he just went and signed the twat - rather than declaring interest and dithering on it like the current gaffer does.

I am not by any means 'anti-blackwell' but under his management we seem to spend a lot of time being linked with players and him confirming an interest but then never actually signing them. I hate speculation anyway but he does seem to daudle a lot. It may well be a sign of the times financially but its been like this for a couple of years. When NW was in charge we had no money but he seemed to snap players up out of the blue.

Differing styles maybe - but its frustrating to say the least.

No time for the man football wise but I think you're being harsh here.

He's got bugger all control of any purse strings and I would think any negotiations are done "above his head" somewhere. There may be a number of players that all of a sudden become out of our reach as soon as a wage is mentioned.
Besides he has to feed the Radio Sheffield Mole a constant stream if dis-information in order to maintain that vital 1% edge.

I just think the media are on top of everything these days and it's much harder to keep anything quiet.

In KB's case, information has only really come out from him when it was already common knowledge and to be fair, a fair proportion of his signings have come in 'under the radar'.

I love it when KB comes out and states that he doesn't want to mention targets, so as not to make others aware bla bla bla.

But then openly admits who they are looking to sign.

Over the last couple of years, most rumours have come from a player being on trial, he (or his agent) openly telling everyone, or the local media have got wind of something. I'm struggling to think of a potential signing KB has mentioned that has come as news.

we very rarely sign someone at the beginning of transfer windows. We inevitably wait until the end till other clubs have done their business then declare 'we had one or two irons in the fire but couldn't sort them out in time - then I lost X player just before midnight'

I'm fully expecting this to happen :p

Mark Yeates? Brian Howard? Ched Evans? David Cotterill?

All players that KB openly admitted he wanted to sign.

I don't remember KB mentioning Yeates before the news broke and Cotts was hardly a shock given he'd been playing for us. As I recall, the other two were both common knowledge in the media before KB confirmed it. Maybe he shouldn't confirm anything but it gets to the stage these days were there's no point in denying some things or he'd get accused of lying, wouldn't he ;)

KB stated that Yeates would be having a medical in the afternoon.
Cotts, I can possibly accept.

Howard and Evans were in the media, but so are a lot of speculation.

What I am saying is, don't try saying the line that you don't wish to talk about targets in public if you're going to go ahead and do it.

I'm happy for him not to mention any names at all.`

I agree but in this day and age that's impossible.

Re Yeates, Strachan had already said on the Friday that he wasn't in the squad as he was signing for us. At the end of the day, there's a big difference between a deal almost being done i.e. Yeates and the fiasco that was Leroy Lita.

Oh yeaaaa, Lita is another one.

Howard nearly turned into a fiasco too. Stating he was about to sign then look like it maybe scuppered.

It's like buying a new house or a used car. If you are sensible you don't pay silly money for the first thing that comes along. You weigh up the options and try to get something that fits your budget - even though it may not quite 'tick all the boxes'.

Some might call that dithering. I call it commonsense.

In the end it is pretty hard to keep a deal quiet these days. As soon as we start to talk to a player their agent is going to leak the news to some sort of media form to check the market to see if there is any other interest. Especially as we are not the biggest payers anymore it is worth the agent fishing around. The more the player gets the more the agent gets.
Lita is a probably a good example of an agent who is fishing around for the best deal and in the end the player will go where themoney si best even if he has verbally told us that he will be signing.

Agreed Broomers, but does anyone genuinely care about what KB does in the press about signings. I think people micro-analyse things far too much.

No manager performs perfectly in the transfer market, unless they've got a sack of money like Mancini. Let's see what happens come the close of the window and then pass comment, no point working yourselves into a frenzy until then.

Or even then because nothing will change. Too many negative waves Moriarty
