Why aren't we playing tomorrow night?

Given the impending fixture pile-up which is set to possibly cost us automatic promotion:-

Why the hell aren't United doing everything possible to arrange the Brentford match for tomorrow night?
The main roads are clear. They've had since Saturday lunchtime to clear the stands, car park and surrounds.
Is the pitch not playable? I've not heard anything to suggest it can't be patched up in time.
There's nothing on the official site at all.
Playing the match tomorrow doesn't even seem to have been mooted as a possibility?
Surely we need to get this on while the players are fresh and with no other game until Friday?

P.S. Have the club ever explained why the Crawley match was arranged for mid-April when it was postponed in January?

I think the police have something to do with not being able to re-arrange at such short notice.

I don't think it would be fair on Brentford fans either. I wouldn't be happy if I'd have to travel to London tomorrow after a postponement at the weekend.

For FA Cup replays I seem to recall that the police need 10 days notice, so this match will presumably be the same.

hmm. who knows? maybe cos crawley dont have any fans? i dont think it really makes much difference though. on the other hand when we play tranmere we wont have played for two weeks so we should be insanely fit and win easily...yeah...doesnt really work like that though does it. though why we cant just switch the crawley game to fit in the brentford game ive no idea.

It was supposed to be a national rule. I remember the days when FA Cup replays were always played the Tuesday following the Saturday but the police complained that they didn't have time to organise sufficient cover. To be fair, it was aimed at clubs with bigger followings than either Crawley or Crewe but it's still not often that it happens.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and all, but I think this should be a lesson in when to re-schedule matches for. We've (seemingly) had ample opportunity to slot in the Crawley match since it was postponed which would have left us an extra slot at the back end of the season. Advice for the future - re-schedule matches for as early as possible!

What i do find a little disappointing is that we havent recieved any communication from SUFC regarding this.

I thought it was quite plausible that this game could have been either played tonight or tomorrow, it would have been nice to know officially from SUFC whether this would be the case or not.

Well I'm guessing the "no news" means it officially wasn't the case.

As far as I can see, the stakeholders involved are the Football League, the Police (got to arrange staffing), Brentford (who have to arrange travel for players and fans, hotels for players etc), the Referees Association (hotels, eligible refs who are free), United (did the pitch get worse? Can we get fully staffed up at short notice? Can we get deliveries in? Any more for anything else?

Do the council get involved with road closures? They might not want the roads around Bramall Lane closed off while other routes are dodgy in the snow and ice and they're trying to keep everything gritted.

Is isn't just a case of deciding we can have a match and then having one. It's a bloody nightmare.

All the above apply to Crawley v Crewe and they were able to rearrange the match for Tuesday and announce it on Saturday.

Your original post suggesting the match might be in danger was on Thursday afternoon, so there was plenty of time to put a contingency plan in place for Tuesday.

Did United even try to get the game rearranged for Tuesday?
Maybe the police have said no?
Maybe Brentford want us to have a fixture pile-up and have refused to play Tuesday?
Maybe the pitch is unplayable?
Maybe we'll never know?
Maybe we'll still be wondering "what if?" when our exhausted players drag themselves off the pitch at Wembley?

England play tomorrow night and I cannot remember the last time a football league match was being played at the same time as England playing

Well that can't be the reason. Crawley are playing Crewe tomorrow!!

I don't think we should bother playing the game. The league table always looks better when you have a game in hand. If we do need the points to wrap up the title at the end of the season then shoe horn it in then. ;)

I'm not sure about conditions in Sheffield, but the snow had cleared by Friday afternoon in Chester/Crewe, so I'm guessing there's no problems in that regard.

In terms of policing, I'm sure a 3500 crowd is easier to control than even a 15-16k one
