A number of our fans seem to be pissing their pants with excitement at the prospect of Miller coming back and I'm struggling to jump on the bandwagon. (Much like I was completely baffled by any euphoria surrounding Weir's appointment. On the contrary, I was disappointed we had gone for an untried coach when we needed almost guaranteed success due to the current dire situation.)

Miller did ok for us when he was in the team, but we are talking about yet another player that it is very unlikely will fit into our system. He played well up front with Porter, but he is not a lone striker. He isn't strong enough, skilful enough or quick enough for this role in my view. He is a goal poacher with decent positioning and finishing. A "box player" if you will. We don't create enough chances for this type of player as we rarely get the ball in the box (the opposition's box that is).

I am concerned it is another case of somebody getting a lot better in people's minds when they are absent. I would imagine Crewe fans would find our excitement and anticipation pertaining to his return slightly amusing as well. After all, his career goals per game ratio (from Soccerbase) is a measly 0.24 goals per game. This, to me, isn't saviour material.

Again, please Mr. Miller, feel free to prove me wrong.

It's probably a "grasping at straws" reaction as the other incoming "saviours" (Murphy, Taylor) have been a disappointment. We're all holding our breath for the new style passing football for Mr Weir to produce results - but meanwhile we're running out of wind!

It is just rather disconcerting that our perceived best goal threat is a 1 in 4 striker.

Although, having seen today's starting line-up, it isn't that difficult to see why. I just tweeted that it is probably one of the weakest starting XIs in my life time, and that includes league cup games.

I can't even fathom out what formation we must be playing.

Lampiao nailed it - we are grasping at straws.

Ironside on his own. jesus wept.

You can admire a man for sticking to his plans and principles, in the face of poor results if he really believes its about bedding a squad in to learn and work around how he envisages is the best way to play and one nailed on to make both him and the club a success.

However, going in to a game which, if we lose, could see us in the relegation places and sticking to said system but playing a RB who hasn't played for a few games at RM and IRONSIDE as a lone striker smacks of an equal mixture of pig-headed and down right fucking stupid.

Not convinced he is 'sticking to the said system'. In fact it looks like he's deliberately shaken up the line-up and formation.

The suggestion on Radio Sheffield is that it's 4-1-4-1. Who knows, maybe it's 3-4-2-1. Frankly, I don't care so long as we get a result.

I actually think its Wing Back time!

The answer to the OP. Joe Ironside up front by himself. We'd get excited if someone dug Ashley Ward up.

:-(

Westlake is on the wing, replacing Flyn. Nice to start with11 men even though Westlake is rubbish.

Yes, stick to your principles and plans and whatever, by all means, provided, that if you fail, you are the loser.
All of us have principles(I hope) but relegation is not in the mix. It is we, the supporters who may pay for, as puppet says, Weirs principles . If that should happen, Weir walks with his principles intact and we are left up the creek..

I'll make a predictionn: Joe Ironside will not have a future in League football. Myself and the bloke next to me at the game watched him warm up, and he was doing a drill where the coach crossed the ball and he had to shoot first time from 6-7 yards out against Howard. He repeated it about 8 times, and I kid you not he only got one. Most were either scooped over the bar/wide, or scuffed into the keepers hands.

If we are going to play a lone striker, which can work with a good midfield which I believe we have, that striker has to have excellent movement and be a constant goal threat. We do not have that player. Bring in at least one player like that and I think we'll be fine.

I'd prefer us to get Ebanks-Blake (unattached at the moment) and play 442:

Long
McMahon Collins Maguire Hill

Murphy Cuvelier Baxter McFadzean

Taylor Ebanks-Blake

That side would at LEAST make the playoffs.

Same opinion - what on earth is Miller going to bring to this party as he does not fit into any formation Weir has in mind.

James Shield should be asking the pointed question instead of trotting out all these lame excuses.

I am not surprised that Weir doesn't want to rush Miller into the side - he doesn't see any reason to use him as he is not a lone striker by any stretch of imagination and he will not, categorically ever, as stated from his own lips, set up his team to play 4-4-2

In fact - if you were a striker of any kind, other than a Marlon King type, why the hell would you even consider coming to Sheffield United knowing how the manager sets the team up?
Who on Earth would want to be one of a group of 4 or 5 knowing that only one will play the game with the rest sat on the bench for most of their contract if they are not the single first choice striker?
Who the hell would want to work their gnads off on their own without any service to score goals - you wouldn't get a win bonus, certainly not a goal bonus and when the time comes to move on you will be leaving on a free rather than for a big fee (with the % signining on fee) as your goal scoring record will be utter pants?

If it were me, I'd tell him to bollox and go and find a club where I would get game time, support and service and have a chance of making a living doing what I loved best - not some contrived bastardisation of what essentially is a simple fucking game.
