Who went to Rotherham in 02/03?

Millmoor often seemed to be a potential deathtrap looking back at the old days.

My Father was there the day Rotherham had their record attendance, against United in 1952-3 when we won the old Division 2. There were over 25,000 there and Lord knows how they all got in.

He says that he watched the game sitting right next to the pitch, along the touchline at one end. Loads of kids were lifted onto the pitch to escape the crush. Different times.

The attendance in 79 wasn't far short of that - there were United fans all over the ground as we prepared to bounce straight back to division two.
Can't remember how the rest of the season panned out.

i remember the Bob Atkins goal too, although i was'nt there to witness it, i was listening to Bob Jackson on Radio Sheffield, he used to play a lucky military march when all the games were coming to an end (no commentary in them days) in the hope that it would bring one of the local sides a late goal, and lo and behold when the music finished it had worked and the blades had scored a late winner, i seem to remember it working for Kevin Arnott too at Southend.

I was there, things I remember:

Not sure how late on in the season it was but I think we let a 2 goal lead slip. Anyone there at that game? I was a devastated kid that evening.

Not sure how late on in the season it was but I think we let a 2 goal lead slip. Anyone there at that game? I was a devastated kid that evening.

The match at Oxford in 1983-4 season was an absolute cracker. Oxford at the time were were a very good side. We were a bit all over the place early on and Oxford deservedly went 1-0 up. We then started to get a grip of the game and I think it was Edwards who equalised. I seem to remember Morris having a great game and we went 2-1 up in the second half (I think from a penalty) and looked set for a very good away win. I remember the United supporters singing "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to see United win away." Then very late on they scored with a shot from the edge of the box. Finished 2-2.

In the home game later in the season we went 1-0 up in the first half in front of the kop. Cue "Here we go, here we go, here we go", but unfortunately there we went and they equalised later in the half even though the linesman was clearly flagging for an infringement. Still, we had already had a let off as Oxford 'scored' a little while before that but had it ruled out for (I think) offside. Late in the second half Oxford got another and it finished 1-2.

I remember the Bob Atkins goal. I was sat in the Rovrum stand with a few others and we all went nuts, I lost a trainer in the celebration which was never ever seen again

I also remember the earlier game back in the days of a forward pairing of Jeff Bourne and Barry Butlin . There were so many Blades in the home end that the wall fell down behind that goal. I know it was the biggest attendance Millmoor had seen for years and I might be recalling it wrong, but I think we won 2-0. Cue Darren

I was also in that crowd and when the wendies went there the idiots deliberatly knocked down the wall - they love to copy the Blades
