It's just dawned on me that this is the first time the Blades have had a Manager younger than me. Not a pleasant thought. Who was your first?

No one yet - but it is getting too close for comfort. I am in the category of being old enough to be the dad of some of the players though.

This has been bugging me for a while. Players were always "MEN", always a lot older....and looked it. Now I'm 44 and some of these players could be my sons! They all look so bloody young!! I still picture some past stars as being much older than myself, wierd innit?

I love to know who the two posters are who were born before Joe Mercer - Aug 1914.

I'm afraid it was Nigel Spackman for me
UTB FTP

Me too, but I feel even older than that. I heard the name Tom Hately on the radio playing for Motherwell the other night. I just checked and it is indeed Mark Hateley's son, but the frightening bit is that I can remember his Dad, Tony Hateley, playing, which makes him young Tom's grandad.

Oh dear....

As for the question, I have no idea, but probably Spackman, though I'm not much younger than Kendall, with a slightly healthier liver.

If you're really not much younger than Kendall, yours could be Mcewan who was born in Jun 51, five years after Kendall in May 46. Other birth dates that I couldn't be arsed to look up earlier:-

Porterfield Feb 46
Mcewan Jun 51
Bassett Sep 44
Kendall May 46
Spackman Dec 60
Bruce Dec 60 (but 29 days younger than Spackman)
Heath Jan 61
Warnock Dec 48
Robson Jan 57
Blackwell Dec 58
Speed Sep 69

I think the Davison option might be redundant.... Got to be impressed with three posters who were younger than Joe Mercer though!

16th Manager for me, which when not counting Speed, that's one every four years, which is a resonably high average for any team.

Pity you youngsters' averages.

Well, four years was a high average at one time. These days to survive 4 years as a manager can be considered a monumental achievement...

I move onto my 10th manager with Speed - in 23 years of watching the Blades - one every 2.5 years excluding Speed.

Since Bassett the average tenure is only just over 2 years.
