I used this as an answer on the general sport section but thought it might be a good 'un to post on here
"My first wife and her family were Citeh fans and in the 70's I spent as much time at Maine Road as I did BDTBL
They lived close to The Quadrant pub in Stretford - I park near there when we put in an appearance at OT.
We were god parents to her best mates kids and she was married to a player who started of in Man U youth, moved on to Luton Town and then on to QPR, Birmingham City, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and then Neuchatel Xamax.
He played 56 times for his country scoring 19 goals and was his countries leading goalscorer for a time.
When he achieved that, he and Johnny Giles were summoned immediately after the match to go to the Eiran President, Eamon Devalera (sp?) to receive a memorial trophy which was a huge marble shamrock! He and Johnny Giles turned up in their sweaty kit , boots in hand.
He coached the juniors at Arsenal and was also the coach for Eiran youth team with a brief time when he managaed his national team.
I played golf with him many times and when he could, he brought the family to our hotel in Leeds and they stayed a few days - my wife and I often went to stay at their pad in the West Midlands and amongst the gliterazzi we met was Jasper Carrot who lived in the same village.
On one occasion, my father-in-law and I went to a match at BDTBL with the intention of meeting him after the match. We had birthday gifts for his children but we weren't allowed to meet him after the match as the players were kept in for about two hours after the match finished.
The next day he and his family had been having Sunday dinner and his wife and the kids went off into the garden leaving him to deal with the washing up. His wife, realising that it had all gone quiet in the kitchen went in to see the sink overflowing and he was sat at the dining table holding his head in his hands and crying saying "I've let Chris (me) and all those wonderful fans down."
Who was he?"
