I used this as an answer on the general sport section but thought it might be a good 'un to post on here

"My first wife and her family were Citeh fans and in the 70's I spent as much time at Maine Road as I did BDTBL

They lived close to The Quadrant pub in Stretford - I park near there when we put in an appearance at OT.

We were god parents to her best mates kids and she was married to a player who started of in Man U youth, moved on to Luton Town and then on to QPR, Birmingham City, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and then Neuchatel Xamax.

He played 56 times for his country scoring 19 goals and was his countries leading goalscorer for a time.

When he achieved that, he and Johnny Giles were summoned immediately after the match to go to the Eiran President, Eamon Devalera (sp?) to receive a memorial trophy which was a huge marble shamrock! He and Johnny Giles turned up in their sweaty kit , boots in hand.

He coached the juniors at Arsenal and was also the coach for Eiran youth team with a brief time when he managaed his national team.

I played golf with him many times and when he could, he brought the family to our hotel in Leeds and they stayed a few days - my wife and I often went to stay at their pad in the West Midlands and amongst the gliterazzi we met was Jasper Carrot who lived in the same village.

On one occasion, my father-in-law and I went to a match at BDTBL with the intention of meeting him after the match. We had birthday gifts for his children but we weren't allowed to meet him after the match as the players were kept in for about two hours after the match finished.

The next day he and his family had been having Sunday dinner and his wife and the kids went off into the garden leaving him to deal with the washing up. His wife, realising that it had all gone quiet in the kitchen went in to see the sink overflowing and he was sat at the dining table holding his head in his hands and crying saying "I've let Chris (me) and all those wonderful fans down."

Who was he?"

I have relatives in Switzerland and knew Don Givens had gone to Neuchatel Xamax after us but the last part confirmed it - a sad time all around.

UTB

I was at the Walsall game but the effect it must have had on the players as well. It put an end to any possible Martin Peters management career.

Agreed and also put the end to a future career Don Givens might have had on the recruitment of youth for us.

I know for a fact that he would have stayed with us and he would not only have scouted youngsters but would have nurtured them for us into top class players.

That's why I get angry when Blades call him the reason why we went into the 4th Division for the first time ever.

And he's a lovely bloke!

Not THE reason, but a reason. John Matthews was a a reason too, as was Martin Peters.
By far the lowest point of supporting the Blades - Losing 3 play-off finals and four cup semi finals in my lifetime doesn't come close

An epic failure such as that slide into division 4 is never the fault of just one person. Of course it falls (no wrong, he volunteered) on Don Givens as the one who committed the ultimate act that condemned us to our fate, but there was a far bigger catalogue of mistakes that led up to that moment, that go right back to negotiating the loan that built the South Stand. Worst moment of my time as a Blade, being at that Walsall match. Nothing since comes close to the feeling I had that day watching the aftermath on the kop. Blame the board, blame Harry Haslam, blame Martin Peters, blame Jon Matthews, blame a good many other players. At least on that day when no other twat would, Don Givens was prepared to take the responsibility. Not the villian in my eyes, will always have time for him for having the nads to take it on....but don't mention Martin Peters!

Thank you !

Yer've just reminded me what a well run club we are/have been.

Narthen SEB ...................behave thisen........ I have it from the horses mouth the freehold is safe.

Agree. Don's wife is a relative of mine and he is my eldest son's godfather. They're a lovely family. I know Don is still gutted about "that penalty".

Looking back, dropping down to the lowest tier was a springboard and those who witnessed the following season still say it was one of the most enjoyable as a Blades fan, me included. I was hoping that the drop last season could have had the same effect and to some extent it has, the fans have enjoyed the football and there's a feel good factor around the club again which has been missing since '07. Obviously the result on Saturday will have a major say on how much of a feel good factor but sometimes you have to sink low to get back up again.
