Whiteman

Notwithstanding semantics, I think our two CM's are expected to be more rounded, box to box really. Both are expected to defend and both to get forward into dangerous areas. Neither 'sit' in a Makalele style, because we play three at the back. I believe (from what my mate from Southend has said) Leonard is that type, strong in the tackle but with a good passing range and a shot on him. I know little about Lenihan but assume he'll be cover for the centre of defence and an option in CM when we want to shut up shop.

I think the truth for our CMs is somewhere between a 'sitting role' and 'box to box'. I think the fact we play with a number 10 behind 2 strikers and wing backs that arrive in the box at the back stick means that ours rarely get into the opposition box. Though I accept they have a role in creating things as much as defensively. I'm not sure exactly about Leonard. Some seem to describe him as being quite box to box and others refer to him as a DM. My impression is that he's similar to Basham. Combative, athletic and a worker in midfield who, whilst taking on a fair share of defensive responsibility, doesn't purely sit deep. I think that would suit our system quite well and would offer a more robust (but maybe less creative) option than Coutts or Fleck for certain games.

Another cracking game for him on Saturday apparently.

my mate is a Donny fan and he's raving about him. he'll probably join DCL at Everton and walk straight into the first team having been deemed not good enough for ours?

One positive of our transfer window is that the door is still very much open for Whiteman to return, having signed no midfielder.

2 incredibly cool finishes (plus pen) would he get that time in the Championship?
Ferguson already wants to make it a season long loan...

See Ryan Leonard played in that game today, might be different style of midfielders but I bet the Donny fans wouldn’t swap Whiteman for Leonard after todays performance.

When does his contract expire, they were negotiating one before he went to donny but was it signed?

Was at Rovers yesterday for some work experience. Interesting seeing how Whiteman and Leonard got on. First half Rovers midfield was bullied by Southend's a bit, clear to see why we were so interested in Leonard. All action, loves a tackle and had decent distribution on the ball, would clearly be an improvement on Lundstram.

Whiteman grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck second half. The early, relatively easy goal gave him the confidence and he kicked on. Ran the show, scored an incredible second and stepped up for the hat trick. Wasn't sure about him under Adkins but these loan spells prove we've got a real player on our hands. Hope we bring him back in January, not Leonard's best game but his abilities were clear to see, with his contract situation we might be able to pick him up. These could be real assets in the second half of the season.

but if we want an objective view of what Doncaster fans think of Whiteman shouldn't we be taking more notice of that excellent thread started by Roybg..whatever his name is? That is a broad cross section of opinions on the player from their fans, rather than just one of your mates? The general consensus on Whiteman in that thread from Roy was that he wasn't impressing many people. Of course, now he's scored a hat-trick the see-saw may have swung the other way, as it appears to be doing on here, and fans will start saying bring him back and put him in our first team.

To which I would say...no. Wilder wouldn't have let him go, or let him stay, at Donny if he thought he was anywhere near good enough to get in our first team. I think we need to add players who are at least as good as Fleck or Coutts, or better, to the existing squad and I'm sorry, but that isn't Ben Whiteman - not now, and maybe not even in the future.

I don’t think we’ve got a spare £10million lying around to bring in someone of Fleck and Coutts’ calibre or higher. Best bet is a player who could become as good/better than them. Whether Whiteman fits that mould? I’ll leave that as a matter for Tufty but I hope so as that would be a good thing for SUFC.

Good chance to have a look at him today, Donny v Rotherham is on Sky, kick off is 12:30.

Edit - he's only on the bench for some reason.

January return could be on the cards for this lad!

I think Wilder confirmed whilst on RS the other night he would leave him at Donny till the end of the season. I know he said he gave permission for him to play in the Cup last week.

I heard that too, would have been useful to review in January unless Wilder knows something else... ;)
(I'm saying I think we'll have a new midfielder in January and it'll be done quickly.)

I think we have many class midfield players available. The one who is best at the moment is Duffy although we missed Fleck against QPR.

On the bench for that horrific, grotesque festival of hoof? Mediocre nonentities selected ahead of him? Cancel that ten million a week contract?

Commentators said he was coming on at 75ish. They changed their minds and put Craig Alcock on instead. For that reason alone, the idiots deserved not to win.
