Notwithstanding semantics, I think our two CM's are expected to be more rounded, box to box really. Both are expected to defend and both to get forward into dangerous areas. Neither 'sit' in a Makalele style, because we play three at the back. I believe (from what my mate from Southend has said) Leonard is that type, strong in the tackle but with a good passing range and a shot on him. I know little about Lenihan but assume he'll be cover for the centre of defence and an option in CM when we want to shut up shop.
I think the truth for our CMs is somewhere between a 'sitting role' and 'box to box'. I think the fact we play with a number 10 behind 2 strikers and wing backs that arrive in the box at the back stick means that ours rarely get into the opposition box. Though I accept they have a role in creating things as much as defensively. I'm not sure exactly about Leonard. Some seem to describe him as being quite box to box and others refer to him as a DM. My impression is that he's similar to Basham. Combative, athletic and a worker in midfield who, whilst taking on a fair share of defensive responsibility, doesn't purely sit deep. I think that would suit our system quite well and would offer a more robust (but maybe less creative) option than Coutts or Fleck for certain games.
