It doesn’t matter what you think a club needs to spend in order to get promotion, it’s what Wilder thinks that counts and my overriding argument is that without knowing what Wilder has asked for you can’t argue whether he has been backed or not. As I’ve said, what has Wilder asked for? What if he hasn’t asked for £3-5m. If he hasn’t would you still be disappointed if we don’t spend it? Would you prefer the board to give it him anyway as force him to spend it, just to make you feel better?

You've used the key phrase there PW. "potential prize". We're in a better position than most expected but still 7th behind (and only just in front of) several clubs who have spent much more than us over a long period. If, say, we went for it and spent millions we'd still be outsiders to win this potential prize so the board simply have to judge that risk before taking the gamble. Given recent failings I can't see them doing that and, personally, I don't think I'd want them to because failure would set us back years.

The more of this thread i read, the more the argument appears to be that "some don't think wilder is being backed to buy the kind of players they want him to buy" rather than "wilder isnt getting the backing HE wants".
 
Ryan Leonard 4 goals at a rate of 1 per 562 minutes played - 48% of shots on target playing at a team currently in 17th place having lost 4 of the last 5 matches, Cost circa £700,000. Ben Whiteman 7 goals at an average of 1 every 304 minutes played 56% of shots on target playing in a team currently in 11th place 3 wins 2 draws in last 5, Cost, bugger all. Now I recognise there's clearly something CW really likes about Ryan Leonard but it seems a bit of a no-brainer to me especially when you add in that Whiteman is at least 3 years younger so has greater potential to improve.
 
I agree we have lost money, my figures equate to £30 million wasted as we wallowed in the first division.
The point I make is that prior to the start of the season I am sure McCabe promised investment to take us forward?

Income was 'eight figures' in 2016. It was £10,9m and we lost £ 7,8m
It was also 'eight figures' in 2017. It was £ 11.6m and we lost £ 5.7m.

So let;s say this years increase gets up to near £15m? Even at that we are still likely to lose £2-3m.

Can't you see that most of McCabe and the Princes investment has been spent on plugging these losses?

You and others might not like this, but the current economics of football wages mean that we will continue to lose money outside of the Premier League. So if you want Mccabe to 'invest' will you be offering to pick up this year's losses and those from future years that arise from the higher wages being paid to these new star players you want us to sign?

As I said mate, I very much doubt Wilder has asked, he surely would have to be told what the budget is but if you're right that Wilder has asked for X amount of money then I doubt one permanent and loan players would be his desire. I can as a fan make a judgement whether he is backed and in my view is that he hasn't as much as we should be.

With all due respect mate, I would be amazed if Wilder turned down extra money for team spending!?

HRH was supposed to increase it after promotion.

HRH has gone on record to say that he is prepared to back the manager in this transfer window. As stated previously McCabe is conspicuous by his absence and can only assume that he is required to match any HRH investment, that does not appear to be the case, although we have to wait until the end of the window for clarification.
I can understand no investment but cannot understand why our fan base has again been mislead. Either left hand does not know what right hand us doing or they sing off different hymn sheets.

I agree it’s common sense but please do not mislead the fan base

Can you supply a link to show when the owners made these claims which stated how much extra they promised to spend this season?

No but what Wilder would do is provide the names of the players he wants and the board would say whether or not it’s possible. Do you know of any players he’s been told he can’t have or are you just assuming it has happened?

Not turning down money and not being backed are two very different things. Wilder said he wouldn’t be spending loads, he hasn’t yet said that he’s not being backed.
 
They both promised investments at different times in articles in the Sheffield star, the latest of which was I believe November when the star ran four articles based around an interview with HRH.

You can of course assume that I make it all up?
 
This thread is absolutely mental, we don't know how much Wilder has to spend but it should be more but the money comes from an unknown source.
Even if £7,000,000 suddenly appeared in the transfer budget we would still only pursue the players we have been doing, why? Because Mitchell and his men in black haven't carried out their investigations into anybody else and they won't risk spending money on a great player that they haven't investigated, and rightly so (we can call this the 'H' factor - Horsefield, Hendrie, Hammond).

We could have £7m and we'd still struggle to sign players from other championship clubs because the ones in the top half won't want to sell to a rival and the ones in the bottom half won't want to weaken their team and risk relegation. We'd have to pay well over the odds.

So we'd still be shopping in L1.

When you talk about January transfer windows, it is at those times where perhaps those extra investors or investment can give you that ‘kick’ to take you from there to there.

The thing that I do not get, and if you refer to Alan Biggs latest article he does not either.
Why when we are so close to putting ourselves in a position to get back into the premiership do we stop investing?
Ok we lose ~ £5 million every year for the past six but this year that is offset by the £7 million sell on income, in fact this year we should make a profit.

I haven't heard Wilder saying he won't be spending lots but not saying he hasn't said that mate. He has said he always wants more - what manager wouldn't - and he'll squeeze the best out of the budget and loans are therefore likely over permanent deals.

You keep asking me questions that neither of us can answer but I'm looking from where I am as a fan that we have a small budget for player recruitment, the article below from Alan Biggs who has far more contacts than we do also states this.
