Which players have been our record signings?

But it wouldn't be if we hit the Premier league. Tell me why Fosun and their billions went to Wolverhampton, a fucking shit hole of a town with far less going for it as than the Blades. Why can't we attract that?
I can't tell you why. I asked the same question myself on a post yesterday.
According to a Wolves poster they did extensive research into which club was the best to buy and the research told them that Wolves were. So we can fantasise about what a great buy we'd be but the evidence suggests otherwise.

Derek Dooley talks about this transfer in his autobiography. We paid £400,000 for him and he took a big cut in wages to come to us.
We signed Brian Marwood at the same time, so I wasn't sure how much we paid for him. I think Jones was still our record signing.

Evidence is McCabe. He won't let it go.

He could well have been. I'm trying to cast my mind back to the 1980s and I can't think of any players that we paid more than £400,000 for.

We paid out quite a lot in transfers during Brealey's first few years in charge. But from memory, they were all in the £100,000 ballpark - Edwards, Morris, Curran, McHale, etc. A lot of money relative to our league position, but nowhere near what we paid for Jones.

I think he was our player, then left us (perhaps under a cloud), before being subsequently transferred between two other clubs (Sunderland and Middlesbrough?) for £1,000.

I’m sure someone can provide more accurate detail than that.
Alf Common - bought him from Sunderland for £325 in 1901, sold him back for £520:), then Sunderland sold him for £1000  Forum went mental.

Guthrie 1975 (£90-£100k), Sabella 1978 (£160k), Young 1982 (£160k), Mark Morris 1989 (£160k), Beesley (£375k), Vinny Jones (£700k), Hutchison 1995-6 (£1.2m)

Two centre halves were our record signing, that doesn't happen often now. Although just thought of Van Dijk as I type this!

The carrier pigeons were wore trainers hard that evening!

We only paid £400,00 for Jones. That figure must include his wages.
