It is currently Jamie Beattie and has been for eleven years since we bought him for £4 million in 2007.
I remember Vinnie Jones was when we bought him in 1990 (was he our first million pound player?). Also we bought Alan Young for a club record of about £175,000 from Brighton (?) in 1982.
Which other players have been our record signing?

Don Hutchison was when we got him in 1996 for £1.2m. Was Claude Davis when we got him for £3m in 2006? Would Akinbiyi earlier that year have also been the record at the time?

I seem to remember us paying £1.75m for Akinbiyi. Pretty sure that was our highest transfer of the time. Such a Warnock player, he really does love a big target man that bloke. Mind you that deal suddenly seems like a bargain compared to his most recent transfer dealing!

I know it’s not about spunking the money, but I’ve always been slightly embarrassed that our record signing is “only” 4 million quid. Any statistical guru able to list all the clubs, smaller than United, that have made bigger signings?

Didn't we have the first £1000 player, or did I dream that?

I think he was our player, then left us (perhaps under a cloud), before being subsequently transferred between two other clubs (Sunderland and Middlesbrough?) for £1,000.

I’m sure someone can provide more accurate detail than that.

Wonder when our next record signing will be? Probably about 2050.

If you want a job doing...

So far, I’ve got Norwich (9M), Wigan (7M), Burnley (15M), Coventry (6.5M), Portsmouth (11M), Blackburn (8M), Pigs (10M), Bristol City (5.3M), Cardiff (11M), Hull (13M), Ipswich (4.8M).

Many of them below us as things stand, so I guess it is pretty meaningless in truth. Can’t shake that feeling that four million is a bit ‘small time’ though.

Charlton have spent £4.7 million. On another note, Chesterfield haven't beaten their transfer record for twenty years, when they signed Jason Lee.

Why buy heinz baked beans at £1 a tin when you can buy cheap and nasty beans at Aldi for 25p? This is our owners philosophy and will be until some billionaire realises that this clubs fans have a venomous desire to succeed, will turn out in big numbers (which is growing) is the oldest professional stadium in the world and is generally the dogs bollocks compared to some of the plastic shite in the premier league. This club could be real force with the right owner.

Then he'll realise that if he puts the season tickets up no fucker will buy them and look at getting a London club instead.

Could have bought Nadine for 6 mill or spent like Wendy' rubbish and broke transfer record

Glad we didn't some right rubbish out there
Chris spends wisely doesn' get the best maybe.but look at Middlesbrough for example.RUBBISH

It's still a big chunk of our overall turnover. Ask the Chancer.

But it wouldn't be if we hit the Premier league. Tell me why Fosun and their billions went to Wolverhampton, a fucking shit hole of a town with far less going for it as than the Blades. Why can't we attract that?

Derek Dooley talks about this transfer in his autobiography. We paid £400,000 for him and he took a big cut in wages to come to us.
