Which player was you desperate to sign?

Michael Kightly at Wolves around the Blackwell era - if we had a pot to piss in etc…

Jason Koumas & Leroy Lita.
Also wanted Danny Shittu for some reason.

More recently, Matty Cash, Antonee Robinson, Neal Maupay, Eberechi Eze, Jarrod Bowen & Florian Grillitsch.
Agree with a lot of that

Cameron Jerome
John Swift
David Nugent
Eberechi Eze
Marcus Tudgay
Jason Koumas

Always wanted us to try and get Matt Lowton back, such a well rounded footballer and remember Gary Speed saying he might be the best finisher at the club (granted not too difficult at the time). Shame he’s ended up at a team that’s stifles his attacking talents but I’m sure his bank balance hasn’t suffered too much.

The one that sticks out as being a great signing that we realistically could've got was Jason Koumas.

He was immense in our promotion year in 2006 and would've been perfect for us but for some reason we didn't go for him.

Dean Glover but he’d have come into a team not destined to do anything at roughly the same time we were looking at Mark Bright (I know) but he scored plenty and that could have changed things.

Lewis Keane-Potter from Hull. Absolutely desperate for us to go in for him

Mine are those that I thought were/are realistically obtainable for United at some point in time whilst I've been watching:

Current: Lewis - Potter, Bowler.

Past: Huckerby, McSheffrey, Dean Ashton, Koumas, Iwan Roberts, Jason Roberts. Coady, Callum Wilson.

Kevin Phillips.

For me, he had Sheffield United written all over him. An absolute bagsman who we would've adored. He was a striker you looked forward to watching play. Thought we might have had a chance towards the end of his career but in reality we were nowhere near him. I'd have loved to see him in the red & white stripes.

Here you go mate, just for you...

For older viewers : Bruce Rioch - good loan spell in 1979 and we might have avoided relegation if he'd stayed.

There'll be lots more but off the top of my head, conor coady, Dean Henderson, MGW

Andre Gray when he was with Luton in the National League. Sadly Brentford bought him and as they generally do made a big profit not long after,

I remember being desperate to sign Steve Kabba after he put in an absolutely fantastic performance against us for Grimsby. We did sign him of course but he never quite hit the heights I’d hoped for - although he did score some key goals for us including the equaliser when we beat the pigs 3-1.

Steve Agnew during the Bassett days - would have been a huge upgrade on Gannon but he apparently didn't like Utd's style of play (understandable really!)
Tevez while at Boca and playing for Arg in the 2004 Olympics
Coloccini - spotted him while playing for Villareal v Barca and didn't give Ronaldinho a kick all game
Coady was a big miss especially as Clough went for James Wilson instead - a good player but made of biscuits
Duffy after he ran the show while playing for Scunthorpe
Matt Ritchie when as Swindon

I remember being quite excited by him signing.

He never quite reached the heady heights I had how’d he would.

Seem to remember he hit a purple patch at some point which coincided with his contract running out and some interest from ‘bigger clubs’ …. Didn’t it all end a bit sour?

I’ll show my age now for going with Ted McDougall from Bournemouth , John Harris had agreed a deal for £100000 but board pulled out last minute a month later he signed for manure, we would have won the title that year if it had gone through in my opinion with currie Woodward salmons ect, typical blades.
