We are too negative eh ?

4th top scorers.

Not scored in just 3 league games all season.

Ok I can accept we are conceding far too many.

Perception over reality ???????

This.

Definite perception obscuring reality.

Would love to know how many goals we've scored this season compared to same time last season.

I'll look it up for you then, you lazy sod.

This season 45 after 27 games, last season 36 ie 25% more.

People have very short memories on the turgid stuff churned out under Clough.

However, we've conceded 39 versus 31 last season at this stage.

Worst poll ever.

Nigel Adkins has made a career on his gung ho style of football.

His Scunthorpe sides scored an insane amount of goals.

Just think where we'd be if we'd had two centre halves back in July?

Think fundamentally Clough is the more negative. Adkins is having to put out 2 banks of 4 to protect the defence (which is a joke situation when we've now had 4 transfer windows to replace Maguire), while Clough was quite happy to play a cagey negative style. Either manager would have had a lot more success with a proper centre half.

What happened when we played expansive attacking football? We had a really bad run. Clough played negative tactics but then again, he bought the players and then played that way. Adkins didn't buy the players and it stuck with what he's got. I doubt he got Southampton promoted playing defensive football, infact I remember seeing 'the view from' and the fans said he did the exact opposite.
People should stop being so fickle and think about why some of the tactics that are being used, are used.

Sorry but about 5 shots all game last Saturday, that is negative!
Yeah we've done well to score at least a goal each home game but that doesn't justify United playing wretched football at times and we do have some of the best strikers in the league so it should surprise anyone that we can find the back of the net, but our attackers are not at fault.
Simply the rest of the squad are useless and need to be gone sooner rather then later baring the odd layer (Brayford for example)

You can't play fast, attacking, expansive football with out fast, attacking, expansive players. Been saying this for years. No manager can get these players to play that way successfully.

NA has made us more defensive due to frailties in certain players, despite that, we're still scoring goals. Given a replacement CB, and midfielder and we'd see a different story.

Cloughie was negative first and foremost.

I think its difficult to play fast attacking play in a flat 4-4-2 any way.

If he wants to go two up top then he has to play a diamond, in order to play a diamond he needs to get a defense that can for the most part look after its self.

We should remember that in terms of tactical approaches this has been a season of two halves, before and after Shrewsbury.

We've played 10 games since Shrewsbury, scoring 15, conceding 11. So our scoring record is just a bit worse, while we're conceding fewer.

Does a reasonable amount of goals scored mean we're playing attacking football?

Our goals since Shrewsbury:

  • Barnsley 1-1. Basham/own goal after corner
  • Oldham 1-0. Done open play, long pass from Collins
  • Coventry 1-0. Sharp from corner
  • Scunthorpe 1-0. Sharp from corner
  • Bradford 3-1. Sharp long shot. Sammon, break and cross from Coutts. Edgar, after regaining possession after corner.
  • Peterborough 2-3. Sharp pen. Own goal (after good move)
  • Man Utd 0-1
  • Wigan 3-3. Done, open play, cross from Sharp. Sharp, open play, header from McEveley cross. Done rebound from Sharp shot.
  • Colchester 2-1. Sharp, after long kick from Long. Own goal after corner.
  • Swindon 1-1. Sharp pen.

7 goals (46,7%) from set pieces is quite good. Does it suggest we're playing attacking football or the opposite? We hardly ever won a header from a corner under Clough. It is definitely something we've improved at.

Clough's inclination is to play a secure brand of passing, counter-attacking football. Adkins's inclination is to be more expansive & front-footed.

Clough was regularly criticised (unfairly?) for being single-minded & not willing to adapt. It seems that Adkins has bitten the bullet & adapted to a more negative style post-Shrewsbury, out of seeming necessity with the players at his command.

It's possible to admire the approach of both men, one for sticking to his guns, the other for being effective in altering the playing style against his natural inclinations.

Cloughies kept it tight at the back and played on the counter attack. Brays and Harris used to bomb on and actually get crosses in and Bash and Scougall used to get up into attacking positions. Unfortunately he fell out with McNulty and used Adams too sparingly.
Adkins team is too narrow, the way he uses his midfield is generally fucking up the whole team. They play much too deep and clutter up the defence thus making them and Edgar/Collin look a disorganised bunch of cunts. Also not enough speed to get up and support the strikers.

That’s not entirely true, even Danny Wilson had to play with 2 banks of 4 (even when Harry was here) to protect the defence and as someone mentioned earlier “If both recent managers had addressed the CB situation” the teams performances and results would be vastly improved.

Both Nigel’s had to revert to 2 banks of 4 (thus protecting the inadequacies of our CB’s) NC had started to address this by dropping Collo. We have since under NA gone backwards to 2 banks of 4 again. With this setup there is no way the midfield can bridge the gap between defence and our two forwards, especially as NA has chosen less mobile players without the ability to RUN/TACKLE/CRERATE for 90 minutes.

Also BEATLEBLADE Adkins hasn’t had to stick with the team/players that he has inherited. He has actually added his 5 signings who are now playing most games, with Sharp is the only one who merits his place. Although (just my opinion) McNullty would have got more goals from open play if given the chance, plus he cost less and may have become more of a prospect when we moved him on.

Not sure what the answer is but we are no further forward from the day we lost at Wembley to a goalkeepers penalty miss ………..

Totally agree!
