Which 5 would you keep?

I'd happily get rid of the lot and start again, so long as we got decent fees for some of them. Sharp included. I don't see many teams getting promoted with Sharp in the side. He needs 5 clear cut chances to score 1 goal. Sure he will always score goals, because he gets in the right positions, but unless you are a great attacking team creating chance after chance it's going to be difficult to win games with him. He's probably our best player, but only because the team is utter pish.

Yeah whatever.....:)

By the way, Exeter would be the 2011, 2012 season where Long played 2 league games. Won one (MK Dons), drew one (Exeter), clearly he cost us promotion..... lol.

He cost us 2 points and Simonsen was part of a solid team. Your love for Long baffles me despite his utterley terrible displays for us over the years. If I slag Long off in the woods with no-one around, mosbolad hears it :)

I predict we'll start pre season with the following...

Long
Howard
Brayford
Collins
McEveley
K Wallace
Basham
Reed
Cuvelier
Woolford
Done (possibly sell)
Adams
Calvert-Lewin
Sharp
McNulty (possibly sell)

Then inevitably sign Hammond on a lucrative three year contract.

So that's 16. That's probably the reality we're facing. And we'll be lucky to get rid of the likes of Freeman and Wallace too. We'll also be lucky if he doesn't decide to sign Edgar permanently.
That would be a very disappointing outcome but pretty realistic I would say. God how I hope you are wrong about Hammond: what does he do for Adkins?

If we were run properly the board wouldn't allow Adkins to sign Hammond. He doesn't represent the direction we need to take, he's past it, he's expensive and he'd want a two year contract.

Yes they will, 100%. I wouldn't be dead against that but ONLY on a one year contract and ONLY IF there's no way he'll be first choice. Same goes for Collins too. Both are decent enough professionals. Realistically we will need to keep some of those players most of us would rather see released. We can't go into the summer with only 6 or 7 players, it would give us far too much to do. We'll also need squad players. It makes sense to retain current players as squad players rather than recruit new ones. All signings should be first choice players, and if we're not unnecessarily spending money on squad players we should be able to sign first choice players of higher quality.

The reaction when we announe we have signed Collins and mceverley up for another year is going to be immense. As will the day we sign Hammond on a 3 year deal. The reaction when all 3 are in the team for the first game of the season is also going to be worth waiting for.

First game for next season

Long

Freeman
Mceverley
Collins
Old ex prem player

Coutts
Basham
Hammond
Woolford

Old ex Championship striker who had a good season 12 years ago
Sharp

Your dislike of Long baffles me despite his displays for us this season. (Leading the forum MOM awards with 8 this season). If you slag Long off in the woods with no-one around, no-one hears it Jehovah

Sarcasm aside, what really does baffle me is the amount of slack you cut Simonsen but you extend precisely none to Long who has been selected by every manager that has been here (and dropped by some) over the last few years? Now that is baffling?

I open another thread and there you are, defending him again. Its weird.

No jehovah what is weird is your irrational dislike for him. I accept he may not be your cup of tea for whatever reason, but your dislike knows no bounds. I do find that strange?

His contract is up at the end of the season so I imagine you fully expect him to be released. If he is given a contract I expect you will think that the manager has made a 'weird' decision also?

I would keep matt Done, because of his pace in a one paced team but also he gets scruffy goals. But I think he's a gonna based on the number if games he has played under Adkins. Also he got a few disapproving looks from sharp and Adams on Saturday when he tried to play them in. Not sure they rated his service, even though they seemed a bit static. For a young un, Adams doesn't seem to move around much off the ball.

I would be disappointed if his contact is renewed yes as I would be if most of our players remained here. His improvement from abysmal to average doesn't save him.

Sharp (for one more season)
Brayford

That's it

Perhaps a difficult call. Which 5 players would you keep to create next year's nucleus. Are there as many as 5?

Has any player this season earned his basic salary , appearance money , win bonus . All players are carrying some form of negative baggage from this and previous seasons. . There isn't one player who I would go out of the way to keep . Not one IMO has earned that privilege or indeed respect. . It's 11 blanks on a sheet of paper for me .

We sometimes are too kind hearted ( even with all the flack us fans get ) . To get out of this league you have to be ruthless and 100% focussed both as a player and manager . No excuses for next season is the only starter .

UTB

Aside from any of them under 21 (Adams, Reed, K Wallace etc.);

Cuvelier
Sharp
Brayford
Long
Done

Burton will not be able to afford Coutts or Brayford even if they go up ,Done will want to leave after yesterday (well done stoney wankers) . Which of the numerous offences is Baxter not guilty of and why the hell would we want him ?? No Basham ?
What about the manager ?

The thread was "which 5" and I pushed it to 7 and no for me Basham isn't in that list.

The Baxter mention was a joke.

What happened with Done at Rochdale?

Long
Sharp
Adams

Sorry, I can only name 3. Couldn't give a toss about any others.

I think keeping just 5 though is quite ruthless!!

In my list they are all kept for potential and the future, not what they've done this season and your point is a good one and sums up the conditions our manager has been toiling in.

Sharp has done well and is our club Player of the Season followed by Basham and then Long who both have blown hot and cold.

Long
Sharp
Adams

Agreed. Cuvelier will turn into one of those legendary 'if only' players, Basham only looks slightly-above-average compared to the shite he's surrounded by and Reed is either physically unable to last in the Third Division or maybe is a 'not a footballer as long as he's got a hole in his arse' types. Brayford is wasted at this level and his wages are too high.

Anyway, it's all supposition as we don't know what the new manager's ideas will be. (;)). Maybe he'll use the pitiful 'give everybody a chance' route and waste half a season discovering what everybody else already knows.

We've come to accept mediocrity now we are at this level.

Basham is a decent player but how often does he stand out? A handful of times a season perhaps but it isn't good enough. Is he anything like as good as McDonald, Williamson, Coady were? No.

Brayford may come good but for the money he is undoubtedly earning we can't wait to find that out. We need to try and sell him but I'm not sure who would take him. If Burton go up then Clough would love to have him, but unless he takes another big pay cut I doubt Burton could afford him. Plus, they are a well run club so I doubt their owners would allow Clough to throw away a ridiculous large sum of money on a fullback. Also Brayford is proving again that, Crewe aside, he struggles to perform for any one other than Clough.

Reed may come good, I have high hopes for him but he isn't ready yet. I'd be happy with him as a squad player or for him to be loaned out.

I really, really hope we don't change managers but a negative result tomorrow and all I can see is Adkins facing the chop.

He took dogs abuse at very close quarters ,unwarranted at that ,he just happened to be the poor bastard nearest the idiots ,and he was visibly shaken absolutely disgusting :(
Another point ,when Holt played his big man sketch and squared up to the Utd fans and caused trouble (I was scared he was going to eat me) the only Utd player who had the bottle to try and move him away was little Scougall. If Doyle had been playing he would have been over like a shot ,or the whole of Warnocks and Bassets teams would have ,this team have no backbone whatsoever.
Basham would be there for me as a defender not as a midfielder.

People under contract for next season that I would want to keep (ignoring new pros):

Brayford
K Wallace
Basham
Calvert-Lewin
Sharp
Adams
Done
McNulty (if he's under contract - not sure)

People under contract next year that I would be looking to sell/swap/loan:

Reed
Woolford
Coutts

People we have a one year option on 1 would not renew:

McGahey

People out of contract I would offer a new deal to:

Long

I would let everyone else go. All of them are easily replaceable, many of them with better players for less money.

"Dogs abuse" in front of your old home crowd is hard to bear.

We often talk about how great our fans are and yet a minority (often a significant minority) make S2 a tough place to be.

When times are good the sight of 6000 Blades fans on the road brings tears to my eyes literally.

When times are bad I feel like smacking some of them. I've never walked out during a game but I have moved seats. Bad blood amongst our own fans makes the whole occasion a trauma. I can't imagine how it feels to play in front of that minority and pay them respect. Done will never forget last Saturday and nor should he. He'll be well pleased to be on the bench tomorrow night.
