a long time ago ,on holiday in Fetiyhe ,Turkey getting my hair cut and the Turkish shave the barber suddenly states
eeh by gum I come from Hackenthorpe ,Up the Blades .

Oh, I didn't realise it is a holiday boast thread. I will ask in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns when I start my hols on Nov 8th! Oh,and I'll mention it also in Hong Kong on my stop off on the way back.

I will be coming back from Australia on the same day. Going to Brisbane to see the missus's family and then to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup. If I were wealthy I'd stay a few weeks longer for the Ashes (which I assume is why you are going to those places?)

True story. Flew to NY bout 10 years ago. Before boarding the plane at Heathrow the flight attendent noticed Sheffield on me and my brother's passports and asked us Blades or Owls? My little brother who isnt really into his footy piped up with 'Blades', and the guy said good answer and showed us the SUFC pin on his tie under his jumper. He then bumped us and my dad up to first class, we flew in style!

Na na na na...

in Burkina Faso the coming of age ritual is to recite GCB, holding an inflatable pig in a Wendy shirt above the head, whilst an elder kicks you in the meat an two veg.
another elder dances around you sprinkling holy Bovril water

Taxi driver who pick me up from JFK airport, strong Brooklyn accent asked where I was from, Sheffield, England and he said "Sheffield United", he also heard of the other shite from S6 but mentioned us first. Gave him a decent tip too.

I was swanning round the Florida Everglades when I bumped into a local fishing alone.
He asked where I was from and I, obviously, answered Sheffield, England.
"Ahh The Wednesday" he drawled.
Fortunately, due to their somewhat lax gun laws, I was packed to the teeth with weapons, so I blew the fucker away and fed him to an Alligator. One less pig that no-one will miss.

Just returned to our hotel from a beach bar in Rhodes where the owner asked me ( as he brought a free snack of cheese, salami, cucumber, celery and homemade breadsticks ' cos we'd had a couple of glasses of wine )

" Where are you from in England " ? When I replied Sheffield, he exclaimed " Ah, SHEFFIELD UNITED !!"

It prompted me to wonder where else in the world other Blades have had a similar reaction or recognition of our great club. Answers please ?

PS. I'm posting this after an arduous day at the beach with a temperature of 75 F, a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky and I hope that forum members will recognise the sacrifices I make on their behalf.

I watched the Derby in a pub called The King Arthur in Lyon, France. As our third goal went in, and I started to let my 'up to then controlled' emotions loose. A French guy piped up "well done, the biggest spenders don't win all the time, good for United, Wednesday have no heart" - helped make my day, after the 4th went in, he offered me a beer!

I spent a bit of time working in Portugal a few years ago and wore the red and white stripes regularly. Once the Portuguese saw red and white stripes and heard an English voice they immediately assumed I was a Blade - which at first seemed strange given that Sunderland and Soton were both in the Prem - until I was reminded about Jimmy Hagan. To all Portuguese who remember St Jimmy (thanks Green Day!) English Red and White will always be Sheffield!

And I once caught a connecting flight to Auckland with Quantas from LA onwards. I was just about to board - whilst wearing a Blades sweatshirt and the Aussie flight steward commented on Sheff (in a broad Aus accent). Naturally I asked him if he was a Blade too - but he told he he was a Piggy. Banter was exchanged - and just before we took off he reappeared from first class to us in cattle class and brought me a pint (lager - not bitter - but hey - it was an unexpected treat!) :)

In a previous life, I worked in India for a while training folk to work in call centres.

As part of their "cultural training", I taught em, And made em sing together, the greasy chip butty song, after going through the words, explaining the meaning.

I left a scarf in a bar in Bussana Vecchia Italy....it's one of the few public places there with wifi....so most visitors are bound to see it!

Not a far-flung destination but every now and again when I'm cycling to work in Leicester I will filter past a car with a Blades sticker in the back window. I cannot help myself but feel utterly compelled to tap on the window and shout "up the blades" and give a thumbs-up and sometimes have a quick chat.:)

Takes me back! I used to cycle to Uni from hall on Knighton Grange Road then from our house off Melton Road up and over the flyover. Only 30 years ago!

I've been to Poland a few times and when asked where I'm from the usual response is "ah Sheffield united"

Makes it even better because there's normally a few pigs who go that get the hump because they aren't as massive as they'd like to believe

That's good because when I first started going abroad in the 60's, the response was almost inevitably " Ah, Sheffield W.......y which pissed me off.

Fortunately, when I replied " are tha fuckin daft" they didn't understand.

Not in Sheffield, I'll go "I support Sheffield United" they'll reply "why not wednesday?"

went on a boat trip from Corfu to Albania and had on my old united shirt , one of the locals came up to me and said ah , full monty , that was all the conversation we had as he then said moostra , demastuk vilnyes, or something similar to that
