Where did it all go wrong?

Funny how many think Dooley was a real force for good at United.

Didn't say he was any good. Just an observation that it's gone steadily downhill since we lost him. He was probably the personable go between that every company needs.

Maybe so. I suspect it's gone downhill ever since we started selling all our best players.

May 2007. A kimono house in Northern Japan.

KM. "Well Tezza, now old Colin has ferked off, what shall we do to get us back into the top flight".
TR. "I know it's a long shot but I think I can persuade Captain Fantastic to come out of retirement and lead us back to the promised land. Nah then Tiger Lilly, not so rough with that loufer".
KM. "Is he retired? I thought he was a busted flush and no-one would touch him with a barge pole".
TR. "No, not a bit of it. He's just resting up due to excessive stress and lack of funds in his previous jobs".
KM. "I'm not sure. Isn't there a better candidate out there, you know young, hungry, ambitious?".
TR. "Might be, I haven't looked. I was thinking what doors he can open for us, no bigger name in British football!"
KM. "Go on then, have a word with him. What's the worst that can happen . . . . . . "

Later we got another team worth watching and we seemed to be going places, almost got into Europe one year. Don’t panic lads, we are Sheffield United and we don’t want our supporters getting lost in Spain or Holland so we’ll sell Currie to Leeds and let their supporters have the expense of European football. Not for the likes of us anyway.

I do agree with your central thrust, that we have been a club which, at several times in our history, has been on the verge or establishing (or re establishing) itself as a top club only to throw it away. Thats why I called the United history I did 'Triumph and Disaster'.

On this narrow point though, we were relegated with Currie in the team. That side of the 1970's, Woodward, Hemsley, Badger, Dearden, Colqhoun, had all got old together and the conveyor belt of local players that had produced Woodward and Badger as well as Birchenall and Jones in the 1960's had ground to a halt following the death of Archie Clark in (I think) 1968.

Walthy is absolutely on the money. We had a monopoly on local talent throughout South Yorkshire up to the point Archie died. As usual for SUFC, nobody had thought of giving Archie an assistant who could pick up the system when he moved on/retired/died, so when Archie went, the network went with him.

Mind you, had we invested in a quality forward to replace Bill Dearden instead of opting for Chris Guthrie (we had Francis Lee almost sorted but backed out), who knows what would've happened

Football??? My kind of football died years ago, this modern game just leaves me cold

couldn't agree more.. Let's get back to real football, muddy pitches, a few hard men, no diving , cheating overpaid nancy boys, and pidgeons shitting on you from the roof of the kop.

ROFL. Top post. I don't know if you were taking the piss, but that actually sounds appealing to me.

Bartley only wanted to leave because we were signing another player in his position (Collins)

Sorry I dont buy that pish.It may state thats the case on Wikipedia but the facts of the matter are simpler. Bartley had chance to join a very very big club, which he subsequently did, and can you blame him? wouldn't you? Its not like he thought" oh shit that thoroughbred Collins will keep me out of the side so I'll give Glasgow Rangers a buzz and leg it" is it? They asked, he went -simples ;)

The next manager is indeed in situ. Step forward the standard bearer for proper football - John Pemberton.

If we do go down he should be appointed the minute the season ends with one objective only: Rebuild this football club, Pembo. We know it'll take a few years but we might just enjoy getting there.
