When did we last let in a goal so quickly?

It must have been before 30 seconds Derby got their goal. We had only just finished singing the Greasy Chip Butty. In fact we were so shell shocked that in the second half it took us a minute into the half before we dared sing the song!

It was 19 seconds and I can't remember a goal against us, as quick as that. Can't be far off a record.

Think it took Stoke a couple of minutes to get the first though. Reading is a good shout, but I'm thinking it was about 30 seconds.
When was that Silent ?

I'm sure Peter Withe scored a quick goal for Birm against us and Barnsley getting a quick goal at Bramall Lane in the 80s.

I don't ever remember a quicker goal (either for or against us) than the 19 seconds that it took tonight. We hadn't even touched the ball and we were 1 down.

I reckon that there is every likelihood that its the quickest goal that we have ever conceded.

Quickest goal I remember going the way i wanted it, was Bryan Robson's goal for England v the Frogs in Bilbao in 82 (27 seconds).

I seem to remember going a goal down away at Ipswich really early once. Probably mid to late 90s, and we lost maybe 2-0?

I'll be honest, I'm not 100% on any of those details.

Didn’t Wednesday score after about 30 seconds against us at The Lane a few years back, when Blackwell was in charge?

To concede a goal as quickly as that at any level of football is poor, but is more worrying the higher the level. The previous 1hrs worth of physical and mental investment is tossed away and raises questions.

Tony Moore own goal at Exeter?

00.00 - 00.02 Whistle goes. Exeter centre-forward taps it to inside-forward who rolls it back to midfielder.

00.02 - 00.05 Midfielder takes a touch, sprays it out to right-winger (future Blade, Steve Neville).

00.05 - 00.10 Neville controls it, carries it a few yards down the wing and puts in a high cross towards far post. No Exeter player anywhere near it.

00.10 - 00.15 Cross swirls in the wind. Tony sodding Moore turns his back on it, thinking it’s going over his head, and runs towards where he thinks it’s going to land.

00.15 - 00.17 Ball hits Tony sodding Moore on back of head and trickles into net past a motionless Derek Richardson in front of open-mouthed United supporters gathered at that end.

00.17 Swearing starts.

I remember that, ran home from school to watch it.

It may have been against us but that San Marino goal against England after a few seconds was pretty funny.

I remember Ronnie Simpson scoring a goal for us after 8 seconds at Burnley in the early 1960`s.

Was that the Exeter game where we were also 3 nil down at half time and down to 10 men
Horrible cold day and a nice long coach journey to get there

Only one I remember was vs Reading at home in the Premier League 06/07
If memory serves, it was 16 seconds.

I also remember 2nd half in the crazy 5-3 versus Cardiff in 2004. Rob Earnshaw put them 1-0 up and we hadn't finished singing GCB from the kick off !

January 12, 1980. Crowd 6632.

We were two down after three minutes but my recollection is that it stayed that way until half time.

Second half, Jeff Bourne pulled one back but they scored again and that was it.

We did have a man sent off - John Matthews - but it was late in the game. As he trudged off, he channeled his inner Cantona, and had a confrontation with an Exeter fan who was making his views known on the front row of the stand. Police and stewards had to intervene.

It was, as you say, cold. It was certainly a long way to go for such a miserable experience.

Yep, remember that match although I'm pretty sure it was the season before when we were promoted with Reading and the game finished 1-1. Paddy saved a very late pen as well from memory.

You're confusing a few different matches/goals there. Withe scored our opener in a 3-1 win v Barnsley after 18 seconds. In a following season he scored 2 against us for Birmingham, despite being on loan to them from us, but I don't think an early goal was involved there.

Thanks, my memory playing tricks on me!

United did particularly well to score the goal against Barnsley so fast because Barnsley actually kicked off.

There has been one other 18 second goal for us since: Deano's goal at Oxford in 1997-8, which like yesterday's goal was scored before the opposition had touched the ball. We won 4-2.
