lows give us massive highs the following season we are going nowhere at the moment ! and yes I sat on the kop and cried after givens penalty but darlington away still got the hangover o_O
Yes you got it, after all those low points there was always a high waiting round the corner. But now I simply can't see what direction we're going in, we are stuck in fucking limbo. On one hand we are desperate to get out of a league that is slowly killing us as a club But we all know we can't keep on sacking managers and Adkins deserves his chance.
In all my years supporting the Blades they've got me fucking stumped.

I was present at the boxing day "massacre," I saw the Don Givens missed pen that sent us down to Division 4.
I was there when we used to average 12,000 crowds in the 80s, Mark Stein relegate us at Chelsea, ofcourse I witnessed United lose their premier league status after only needing only a point to survive, all the play off failures and countless star players sold just when we needed them most.
But after witnessing all this shit over the years.
Why do I feel so low now?
Hi hooooooooooooo

If all your hope is gone...

You must have already waited too long... ;)

Well as I've been going since 1966, I count four semi-finals as highlights, along with countless playoff finals, losing 2-0 at Man Utd in 1971 when we were top of the league, various victories over Sheffield Wednesday, winning promotion on several occasions, fantastic players, fantastic memories win, lose or draw. To me this is what being a supporter of the club means. And believe me, there have been worse bad patches than the one we are going through now.

There has been worse bad patch, singular.

Yeah, for real, we played in a League Cup semi final a year ago on Thursday and were one Louis Reed miss hit away from a sensational comeback and a Wembley final. The season before, we actually got to Wembley, breaking a club record for the amount of wins/clean sheets in a row, (Stats gents, do correct me if I'm wrong) scored in a big game for the first time in a generation and were fucking 2-1 up at half time, all this after Wavey-Davey Weir's reign of boredom left us rock bottom 6 months previous. We've contested 3 out of a possible 4 play-off campaigns since relegation and beaten the stuffing out of several top teams, one of them being Forest, a big, BIG rival. Byeah, fuck all happens.

Aaaand ... back in the room.

So, where are we now, remind me?

For all the 'highs', the sum of their parts don't even come to the abject disappointment that by now, you realise Sheffield United are destined to see next season in this division. The odds are stacked against us getting into the play offs, and thereby compounded by odds of success in the playoffs. Even if we beat those odds, I don't see much movement or ambition toward strengthening the squad for the campaign in the division above, so our odds of survival are seriously slim.

Yes, it was indeeed ace to be in two cup semis in two consecutive seasons but as playoffs come and go, so do semi finals. Since 1993 when we rolled over to our bitterest rivals we have had more than a handful of them and have never lifted the silverware.

This isn't 'being negative' by the way. There's being realistic and logical, and then there's being pragmatically optimistic. You learn that supporting this fucking club.

And as for 'there have been worse times', when we dropped to div 4, there was a very determined drive to bounce straight back up, and it happened. When we dropped out of Div 1 in the 70s, we arrested the fall. When we came out of the Premiership, we eventually came back up. SInce 2007 we have freefallen, hitting every branch on the eway down. This now ... is stagnation. It doesn't get any worse, because we know we are and we deserve better times. One factor stands in it's way and it has been there for fucking years whilst everyone blames anything else.

Pointing out all that's wrong and our decline and the reasons is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel, but that doesn't make you wrong...you're bang on..

True, NB there have. But we've usually bounced back quickly, like our one season in the 4th Division etc. The only time recently that we haven't bounced back was after the 2009 PO defeat v Burnley. Instead of keeping the core of an exceptional squad, adding to it and mounting another challenge the following year, the board decided to rip it up and start again. Bounce back? The following season, we finished 8th in the Championship and the season after, we got relegated - consigning us to Division 3 where we still reside.

And that's where 'all hope is (nearly) gone'. This isn't a blip, it's a pattern and one we show no signs of breaking out of.

You're right. It is piss easy pointing stuff out (as Barney loves to do)

We have changed the team entirely ... several iterations. Changed playing style. Changed the pitch. Built new bits of the ground. We have changed managers and backroon staff. Changed our kit. Two things remain the same. The supporters and the fucking chairman. Now I can't see one of those changing. No, actually, as it stands ... I can't see either of them changing.

So we stay where we are.

Nobody denies Bramall lane is very close Kevin McCabe's heart. But it's that inconvenient green rectangular bit in the middle that he could really do without.

Right. This is one thing I don't get. I understand that football fans are generally pessimistic, and that our fans may be more pessimistic than other sets because we're a tier too low, but good God, can you just get some perspective? You're just ignoring the facts. Like, statistical fact. Right now, currently, we are 2 (count them, 2!) points off 6th spot. If we win tonight (Likely against Blackpool who are having all kinds of problems, barring a random 5-0 the other week) and Peterborough don't (Likely, away at Burton is a tough prospect for any team in this division) we are 6th. No discussion. 6th by 1 point. With 18 games to spare, everything to play for and plenty of time to lose, and fuck up and drop and get back up there several times over. The season hasn't even begun yet, buddy. Hasn't even started warming up. To say things like "Sheffield United are destined to see next season in this division" is ludicrous at this point. You have no way of knowing that, and no way of being able to categorically state that we will be here next season.

I think we'll struggle to get promoted this season, for sure. I don't think anyone reasonable is denying that. But to say things with such finality as you and many others are is ridiculous. What other clubs' fans around us are writing off their promotion chances in January? Do you think Millwall, Peterborough, Southend etc are all bemoaning their position?

We've contested 3 play-off campaigns out of a possible 4 since relegation. We only haven't done 4 in 4 because of having literally the worst manager in our history during that time. The 1st play-off campaign we lost from a penalty shoot out that got so down to the wire we had to use our goalkeepers to decide it. I mean you're basically flipping a coin at that point. So unlucky. That's before you even get into the context of how we managed to capitulate an 8 point lead over 3rd in February. We all know how desperately unlucky we were that season. Championship level squad, 90 points, finished in 3rd and lost on penalties to a team way below our level that season? SO unlucky. I cannot emphasise how unlucky we were. I've said it so much, the word has lost meaning, hasn't it? U-N-L-U-C-K-Y. I bet Wilson still has nightmares about it. I know I do.

The 2nd, our wonderful board made a mental decision to sack the manager 5 games before the end of the season, so that's just down to the board swinging the banhammer isn't it? That decision basically cost us 2 seasons in a row, because after that we had the disastrous David Weir blip. The 3rd, we lost the semi final 7-6 on aggregate. I mean, how do you even complain about a 5-5 draw, eh?

It's nowhere near as bad as people are making out, and I think we've had a combo of awful luck and one insane board decision scuppering all 4 seasons. Any other club in this division would be ripping your arm off for a 1/4 of the chances we've enjoyed. There really needs to be some perspective here, because some of the wild speculation and unwarranted opinion is just madness.

This is before you count the cup runs which were amazing and - Hello! are not entitled to us. It is unbelievable that we started the season the way we did and got to Wembley and scored 3 goals. Absolutely insane. Where you there? You remember how that felt? When we beat Villa (best away day ever, BTW) my Mrs said "I'll go with you if you get to Wembley." I scoffed. No chance. No chance at all. 4 months later she sat next to me and we watched them go 2-1 up at half time. I went for a beer at the break. The atmosphere in the stand was indescribable.

Do you remember the last time we led at Wembley? Damn right you don't, because before that sunny day in 2014, it was 1925 the last time we took the lead at the national stadium. Nineteen Twenty-Five. You know how long ago that was? Mt. Rushmore didn't exist. Television didn't exist. Bruce Forsyth wasn't even born when that happened. That's how long ago it was. I'm pretty sure that no living Blade has ever seen that happen before. That's a huge moment in our history. Y'know what's even more insane? We did it again the next season! Another semi-final. How about that. All while we were in the 3rd tier, and apparently dogshit. But yeah you're right man, fuck all happens to this club.

Would you swap all of that to be a Wallsall fan? A Gillingham fan? A Peterborough fan? Come on.

All you naysayers crack me up, because if we do get promoted this season, you'll be the first ones outside Bramall Lane with the Champagne and plastic cups, won't you? Waxing lyrical about how much of a big Bladey-Blade you are and how much you love the club and never doubted it for a second. I'm sure you'll like to talk about how poor the team is then.

Back to my main point. Why do you think you can speak with definitive authority that we won't get promoted, in spite of the fact that we are 2 points off the minimum requirement for a play-off place 18 games before the end of the season?

Calm down, petal.

Right. This is one thing I don't get....

Being 2 points off playoffs isn't a 'statistical fact'. It's a 'fact'. But here's another. We aren't top. And another. We aren't in the playoffs. Here's another ... we managed to rescue a draw from a win last weekend. And the season may not be over by a long chalk, but the majority of the playing has been done and given the performances, can you really see a remarkable turnround and 54 points magicked out of thin air to cement our place in the top six and not allow our playoff opposition to think, "Ah, Sheff Utd. They always fuck it up in the playoffs." Because here IS a statistical fact, 'buddy'. We do exactly that. If you are confident we won't, then I'll have a pint of what you're on.

I think we'll struggle to get promoted this season, for sure ...quote]

No, I don't think they are. Because two of those three came to Bramall Lane t'other week and turned us over. So did Colchester United, who are currently helping prop the division up with a minus 29 goal difference. Had enough? Or d'you want some more?

We've contested 3 play-off campaigns out of a possible 4 since relegation. We only haven't done 4 in 4 because of having literally the worst manager in our history during that time.

What point is this making? Are you saying we should have been blessed with four failed playoff campaigns?

The 1st play-off campaign we lost from a penalty shoot out that got so down to the wire we had to use our goalkeepers to decide it. I mean you're basically flipping a coin at that point. So unlucky. That's before you even get into the context of how we managed to capitulate an 8 point lead over 3rd in February. We all know how desperately unlucky we were that season. I disagree. Luck had something to do with it, but then again so did lack of plan b after Evans and shocking performances in the run in with possibly the most bollockless performance at Wembley. That isn't U-N-L-U-C-K-Y. It's C-R-A-P.

The 2nd, our wonderful board made a mental decision to sack the manager ...

Busted. You are Jim Phipps and I claim my £5-00. Just have a look at what you have typed there and how contradictory it looks and sounds. You are saying that because we fucked up the last half hour at the Lane against Swindon, and drew 5-5 away thereby ending our hopes of being promoted, I should be pleased? Are you on whizz or something? Seriously.

This is before you count the cup runs which were amazing and - Hello! are not entitled to us. It is unbelievable that we started the season the way we did and got to Wembley and scored 3 goals.

... but we lost

... there then follows some kind of history of the world rant apropos of fuck all ...

Would you swap all of that to be a Wallsall fan? A Gillingham fan? A Peterborough fan? Come on.

No. I'd quite happily want my football team to be in their position

Can't be arsed with the rest. The bloke is either pissed, or on drugs.

Argh, I hate the formatting on this site, don't you? I don't think you answered my main bit. How can you categorically state that we will not get promoted this season? Also, that "mental decision by our wonderful board" was sarcastic. Wasn't that obvious? My point was that lots of crazy and wonderful goings on have happened here in the 5 years we've been 3rd tier, and that's pretty good, isn't it? There isn't a lack of ambition from the powers that be if we get into the play-offs every season is there? We aren't entitled to promotion. We are decidedly a 3rd tier side, therefore anything over mid table is actually good. You don't like that, do ya? Neither do I. We've got no choice but to suck it up tho, have we?

I don't know what you mean by "54 points." are you saying that because the top team in the division currently has that? I didn't mean we were gonna get automatic, I was on about play-offs I thought that was implicit because I never mentioned top 2 and did a big thing about play-offs. It doesn't make much sense anyway, as by the time we reach 54 points the teams above us will have more than that, leading to a higher total needed to top the league.

Do you mean 54 points by the end of the season? That's 3 wins and a draw out of 19 games, I don't think I'm being too hasty when I say yes, we will definitely reach that amount. Or do you mean 54 additional points? That would require us to win all but one of our remaining games. I'm gonna stick my neck out again and say that no, that will not happen.

So yeah isn't the average for 6th something like 75 points? That's 34 points away from what we have now. It's a tough order for sure, but we're certainly capable of achieving it. Also, I think it looks like we could probably top off 6th with around 70, as it's quite a low quality league this season. Chesterfield were 6th with 69 points last season. It's doable. Completely doable. We could be in the play-off spots in 6 hours' time, after all.

Smashing post. Just wanted to add the caveat that just because people are pessimistic about this season, disgruntled and writing off our chances, this doesn't mean they don't love the club. If they didn't then they probably wouldn't be so annoyed! We all want United to do well, whether optimist or pessimist.

The 3rd, we lost the semi final 7-6 on aggregate. I mean, how do you even complain about a 5-5 draw, eh?
I think being 3 down inside 20 minutes gave enough to moan about, although the writing was on the wall when Clough, in his infinite wisdom, picked McEveley and Alcock as centre backs. All it confirmed to me was that both sides couldn't defend and Preston would rip Swindon a new one in the final, which they did.

Yeah I was kind of relieved when we didn't get to contest that final, no way we would've won.

what is it with blades fans
we had played preston 3 times , won one drawn one and lost one
why were we certain to lose
last time we met preston in a play off we beat them

we ended up losing to swindon after brayford went off threw our plans first game
very nearly made it back

Decent-ish post but...

I, for one, cannot see us winning tonight. I'll get back to you on that...;)

What other clubs' fans around us are writing off their promotion chances in January? Do you think Millwall, Peterborough, Southend etc are all bemoaning their position?

Without coming over all 'massive', those teams (with the possible exception of Millwall) are 'where they belong' in the pecking order. For a club like United to drop into the Third Division is unfortunate. To spend five years at this level is unforgiveable.

Bruce Forsyth wasn't even born when that happened.

Incredibly, you're right. According to Wikipedia the old fraud was born in 1928. (It doesn't say when he died, though. :D)

yeah and like we all knew Burton, Walsall and Gillingham would be sat top of league 1 come the end of Jan. Who'd have thought it eh with our clubs supposed resources?
really , , our resources,
both liverpool and man utd have spent over 100m on players this season , neither are in the top 4
their resourses aint done much better than ours
pity its footballers in boots on a pitch and not bank statements

plus Id wager all those above us havent had as many players crocked for so long
