What would have happened if Blackwell had been allowed to continue?

Mid table and pissed off at best but I think under Blackwell we would be struggling.

I was surprised last season with the same injury and loan problem we didnt finish lower but perhaps Blackwell to his credit he did manage to grind out results from poor football.

I wonder what Blackwell is thinking now? (other than about his compo money). Why give him all summer then fuck him off after two games, to replace him with Speed (zero managerial experience). Given the fact they had given him the summer, they should have stood by him until December and reviewed the situation then. My preferred option would have been to have got shut at the end of last season (well the play off final defeat but that's ancient history now) and given a new manager the summer to prepare.

Sad but true, football is not sustainable when players and (to a lesser extent) managers are getting paid a small fortune (even the mediocre ones)
 
I honestly think we'd be about 10th right now. Blackwell was solid when it came to getting results even though a lot of people didn't like the way he did it.
 
Agree with Nuddy. Maybe not as high as 10th, it's an awful squad, but much higher than we are now. We'd have made tonight's lead stick, for instance.
 

The writing was on the wall in the last few months of last season when we were dropping out of the Play Off race. The form was settling to lower half form and Blackwell would have had the same problems to contend with. Don't think we'd be much better off.
 
We dug out results under Blackwell though. We might not be playing any better than we are now, but we'd have more points of the board I'd wager.
 
We got rid of Blackwell to try playing football, which we started doing until Scunny stuffed us, and we reverted to type again. Now we have panicked & appointed a manager for the short term, trying to keep us up. Prepare for the next knee jerk reaction.

Blame the man who extended his contract until 2012. If you sign a contract you expect to get paid up. End of.
 
Mid-table this, relegation next. The decline would have been slower and more painful. Football would have been pure shite and the players would have been moulded by the Hoofster to be just as useless to whoever followed him.

We've just Speeded up (see what I did there) what happened when he destroyed Leeds. They've recovered from his being there, how long before we do?

Agree with the above. I think he would have steered us to a lower mid table finish. They are his players and he would have got the best out of them, We would have stayed tight, ground teams down and fluked more wins than not. It would have been a god awful season, with people leaving the Lane in drones but we'd be safe.

With the wage bill being further cut and Blackwell having no idea I think we would have got gradually worse. If he'd have seen out his contract, we'd be in a similar position to now but in another year or so's time. I genuinly think that we needed to get worse before we get better. Unfortuantely it doesn't seem like Ale house Adams is the man to make us better. Still, I'd stick witth Hoofy for League One next year. Give him an opportunity to clear out the junk and start again. Bring in players from the lower leagues (which he knows) and use the academy. Voila: wage bill decreased and better team.
 
Personally I think Blackwell continuously made short term decisions which kept us in the play off contension until last season, but it was only a matter of time before it started going really downhill. I think the squad this season was so weak that I don't believe Blackwell could have made us perform much better. As the results would still have been considered disappointing (the club still spoke of promotion in the summer), Blackwell would probably have been sacked in October-November.

Only my guess of course, but if likely, the timing of the sacking wasn't necessarily the main problem this season. Clubs sack their managers all year, and giving Speed the job in October, rather than August, wouldn't have made much difference to us - maybe it would have been even worse. As I see it we went into this season with a poor squad, where we let the summer pass without carrying through the clear out we badly needed, and instead renewed the expensive contracts of players we should have replaced, which didn't leave enough cash to fill the other gaps in the squad. This made us go for more short term signings, i.e. loans. Again.
 
Blackwell made short term decisions because only Ferg, Wenger and Moyes are afforded the time to make long term ones. No different to any other manager and he was better at it than the bloke before him and the blokes after.

Look at the shit shower around McCabe now. The only thing different this time round to last is league position (we've just as many loans and have continued to offload anyone possesing something approaching ability) and KB's keeping us out of the cark kept the heat off him then. That was part of the deal.
 
I'd have to go for a similar situation as we're in now. It's largely the same players, similar system and the same transfer policy as was in place back then. Blackwell was not known for his motivational skills, so I don't know how he could have performed any better. I think we got 'lucky' finishing as high as we did last season, as on the occassions I saw us we were poor.

Spot on Bergers. If only you'd added "We needed a Ryan Shawcross type at the back".

As I eventually got out of the car park at Stanmore at about 7pm after the Mediocrity Bowl disaster against Team BNP, the one thing that had lifted me from my depression was the unconfirmed reports that Hoofy had resigned. Sadly when I awoke next day this had turned out to a false dawn and the bastard stayed around for another 18 months of havoc reeking.
Having missed one summer opportunity (oh how our recruitment suffered because we were in that game) we then compounded it last summer (sorry, can't remember the exact excuse for our transfer lethargy last summer) and now this coming summer we will be in even deeper shit.

Let's hope now Adams will be in his comfort zone of lower league we can act accordingly and put a team together who can halt the Hoofy Express to oblivion.

Even Blackwell's backers didn't like the way he did it. Somebody in another thread said Blackwell was a patsy. I agree with that entirely. I think it was only a case of "bottoming out" (:eek:) whilst maintaining Championship status but unfortunately McCabe didn't have the bottle to see it through.
 
whenever blackwell left we'd have been in this 'exact' position one year later..
when he took over the blades my mate who is a leeds fan said 'he'll do ok with the players he inherits but then as he adds his own signings (who he will contrive to fall out with on a regular basis) it will all start to unravel'.. that is exactly what happened at leeds and then at united

I'm guessing that we are now the footballing version of the Adams Family then?

Interesting stuff on Blackwell and what/where we would be. He was a kid in a sweet shop. He was never and will never get a bigger job than the one at nor so BDTBL. Blackwell was lucky enough to get the job, he never even asked about the wage or contract details because he beat anything else he was going to be offered. He signed the contract and McCabe was the happiest man of all because he knew Blackwell would do as he was told. He also knew Speed would do likewise and it was a nice little bonus when we got some cash for someone who was not a good manager. Now he has Adams who again will do as he is told and will take the flack.

Blackwell did a decent job to start with lets be honest however, by the end he had been stripped of anyone of value and fallen out with the only decent winger we had and sold him to get him off the wage bill. Blackwell was never a long term answer but he didn't half serve McCabe well. I am guessing McCabe must be very happy right now even though he is paying Blackwell because the amount of shit that man took for him is incredible.

I reiterate, we sacked Blackwell three months too late. We failed to get in the play offs last season so it was time to sack him. Who is to blame for not sacking him? McCabe. Who is to blame for sacking him 3 games into a new season? McCabe. Who is to blame for absolutely everything to do with the way the club is criminally mismanaged at this moment in time? McCabe. Leave Blackwell be, he is just a pawn in the game.

Absolutely spot on, Blackwell was just a pawn in McCabes macabre game (as is Grizzly Adams)
