What was there before Bramall Lane?

One for the historians this, but I've just been wondering - does anyone know what was there before the ground was built? As in before the original cricket ground too?

For such a vast area of land, I'm wondering what made way, if anything?

The correct but rather dull answer is it was just fields, land owned by the Duke of Norfolk.

This is taken from a map of Sheffield in 1851. You can just make out it says St Mary's Church in the green square. As you can see there is nothing beyond that. The full map shows that the majority of 'built up' Sheffield then was within what is loosely the inner ring road.

Up until the late 1800s much of the South side of the city was either part of the Duke of Norfolk's deer park (see Hyde Park, Manor Park, Park Hill etc) or just fields in Derbyshire. Meersbrook area 10 15 mins walk away from the Lane was largely part of Derbyshire until early 1900s when the terraced houses were built.

Whilst I am sure that’s true, that isn’t the end of this thread.

1851 isn’t as far back as we need to go, the reason that it was seemingly empty fields was because it was considered cursed by the people of the area.

This is due to the great incident of 526AD which is never spoken let alone written about. For hundreds of years after this it was left clear on maps and forgotten about.

Because Kozzy_is_my_Dad raised this issue I have spoken to the dead half and half makers of the time and got an exclusive seance set up on Zoom earlier which this was revealed.

Apparently the curse of the overpriced crocked strikers would not be lifted until Sir Billy lifts the Premier League trophy or FA Cup.

If Sir Billy or one of his sons doesn’t lift one of these trophy’s we will be forever under the Curse.

I understand that Hecky is a believer in this curse and part of the persuasion for getting the job was because of his plan to break the curse.

Empty fields? Not a chance it’s cursed I tell you.

Oh and they also said that Oak island was just a load of his mates pissing around to send a load of clueless yanks on a wild goose chase for years.

Its said when they came to create the cricket ground the field had very high grass and that the blades on the scythes were not very sharp and rusted/bent. So they had made some new blades at the local Smithy and to change the blunt ones on the scythes they needed to be held upright to change them hence the shout "Up the blades" came from.

There are some people with an alternate take in that the labourers clearing the field were not happy about the pay that day when clearing/cutting the grass and to show the Duke of Norfolk they would not do any more work they shouted "Up the blades" and walked off (as with scythes you dont "down tools" as they are already down when cutting to render them non operational the blade is upright and lent against or on the scythe bearers cart)

My 4/5 x grandmother (I think) was born in The White House which used to stand on Bramall Lane and was owned by the Bramall family.

So despite not being born in Sheffield, or having never lived there, I was clearly destined to be a Blade!

Indeed, Derbyshire boundary on Chesterfield Road was between Valley Road and Albert Road. Boundary was formed by Meers Brook and by the River Sheaf. Hard to imagine it these days.
