What formation did United play tonight?

It was very strange watching the game tonight! we didn’t seem to have the cohesive CW way of playing?

What I’m saying is the players didn’t seem to know how WE play, so if they are asked to come into the side in the future for whatever reason makes me wonder if some of them would know their roll?

For instance we had a scattering of midfields player across the middle with Kieron Freeman on the right only occasionally getting forward as a wing back with no overlapping support, Kieron constantly had to turn back or pass inside. and with not much going down the left unfortunately forced us to try and play through the middle which was so congested.
The 3 across the back (if it was 3 across the back) never brought the ball out and looked very unsure what they should be doing?
Freeman8, Morrison and Osborne all seemed to be dragged back to try and get some ball but then not being in any position to feed Robinson or The Mouse who both had to drop deep to try and get some service, and when Sunderland had the ball at the back we did not, or where to far back to press up the field.

Not knocking any of the players tonight but think the reason we lost was that the team looked like a bit of a mish-mash, in fact that is what it was, looked like not everyone was on the same page, which is a bit strange for a CW team and how he wants us to play.

So what formation did we ‘try’ to play tonight?

Tbf we have integrated players into the first team and they have done fine. It’s very different integrating one or two and changing the 11 completely. It’s been proven time and again for our system to work they have to be regularly playing together.

Simple fact is we don’t care about the cup, again.

So what formation did we ‘try’ to play tonight?

I'd say we started with the usual 1st team formation but the problems were as follows

1 none of the centre backs stepped into midfield at any point so we looked short of forward thinking players
2 the midfield didn't come and get the ball so we went long often
3 no -one (Ravel and L Freeman excused to some degree) was brave and forward thinking on the ball
4 We didn't work hard enough off the ball all night

All this left the CFs looking very isolated

After half time we changed to 4 at the back and a diamond in midfield, but if you don't do 2, 3 and 4 , then the result will be the same.

It was fucking awful

I thought we started 3-5-2 and then went to a 4-3-1-2 in the 2nd half, when KB got subbed. The 3 was fleck, Besic & Freeman. The 1 being ravel. What made the second formation look odd was that both Clarke and McB seemed to pull wide. The switch certainly confused the players because there was a moment in the 2nd half when we had a corner and both Freeman’s were on the byline seeking clarification from our coaching staff as the ball got put in.

1st half quite often saw Besic pick the ball up and then both Freemans, Osborne and Ravel push on forwards to be in line with Mousset and Robinson, trying to overload their defence? But then meant Besic had no one to pass into or anyone around him. Second half could clearly see Ravel had been told to drop deeper to pick the ball up deep and bring it out, regardless, still didn't work much!

Too many players not understanding what roll they had.Wilder also changing things around constantly to find the right formula.
Classic example was Morrison who played deep and also in attacking rolls,Wilder in my opinion trying to find the best position to get the best out of him which is at present hard to find as he seems to be lacking confidence.
We were making bad decisions all match compounding a poor performance against a team who were up for it and played well.
I'm sure Wilder & Knill will be noting what limitations some of these players have which helps when playing in the first eleven.

The 'treat it like a training session tonight lads, let's make sure we exit the cup' system?

But we are told (and it seems to be true) that training sessions are hell-for-leather no-holds-barred sessions, with the intensity of real game situations. So why don't we even match the intensity of a practice match when the cup games come round? Baffling. Can we fix it for all cup games to be away matches, preferably at least 100 miles away?
