What position will we finish in next season?

For me position is immaterial first season back.

The continued increasing strength of the top 6 means 40 points seems to be enough to stay in the division and that should be our ultimate aim.

That means we need to aim for:

1) W:11 D:7 L:20
2) W:10 D:10 L:18
3) W:9 D:13 L:16

For me, I can see option 1 - were going to catch teams out how we play, so can see wins and losses more than draws.

We will get stuffed by the elite sides, but do well, especially at home against many of the rest. 15th spot.

I totally agree with this. We will get some right batterings by the top 6 home and away but should pick up enough points from the others especially at home.

Apparently 38 points required for survival?

Target:
9 wins and 3 draws at home = 30
5 wins and 3 draws away = 18

48 points it is then :D

16th.

We won't invest much in the playing staff. And will be priced out of most markets.

But Wilder & Knill will have us playing for each other and we'll survive the drop, but narrowly.

It's way too early for this sort of thing given that we don't know who else is up or down yet and no signings have been made. This is where mockery from the snory beasts gets it's ammunition from, no offence.

That said, I'd settle for the position we'll likely start in before a ball is kicked.

To quote a Geordie friends quote.. "17th will do" I'd happily take 17th spot now. Build and consolidate. Make steady progress. Even if we went down. I'd be tremendously proud of the boys and the team.

When you think about it, it’s bad that Newcastle are happy to settle for that every season.

I’m hoping we can ‘do a Bournemouth’. Still, I voted for the 1st place finish.

Apart from the Jokers that have us in Europe and finishing as champions, there is a sensible consensus on our chances next year.

Lower mid table finish is where we should be targeting. This early poll will close in 5 days and it will be interesting to see another at the beginning of August.

Thanks to everyone for playing along :p

Several fans said this after winning League 1 - were you one of them?
I was. And I was right. It would have been. The fact that we’ve done amazingly well, so well that Wilder is manager of the year, doesn’t mean that simply staying up and consolidating wouldn’t have been satisfactory. That’s why we say ‘settle for’, it’s a minimum target, not the extent of ambition.

Try selling that line to Chris Wilder - but don't expect him to interview you for Sports Psychologist anytime soon down at BDTBL!!
I’m not responsible for the teams’ performance though. I’m just a supporter. I’ll happily tell Chris that whilst I suspect we’ll do quite well I’d be more than happy if he just keeps us up.
Or should I set unrealistic targets for my expectations and then berate Wilder and the players if they don’t achieve it?

I wouldn’t apply for a sports psychologist job as I’m not qualified in psychology and have no experience in it.

It's worth studying, and can lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle, just as long as you are prepared to approach it with a positive attitude. Chris Wilder is a winner, schooled in that Dave Bassett "shit or bust" approach to playing football and that's the attitude he insists on from his players. He would have no time for mardy-arse, sour-faced cheats like Bamford, but I suspect he would have had time for players like Nick Montgomery who was mercillesly treated by many on this forum. He raises a wry smile at those who underestimate him and his squad, and that includes some fans.

I plumped for 14th - think we'll spring some surprises and bloody one or two noses along the way :)

I suspect any new signings will be British or Irish. Seems to be an esprit de corps at the lane imbibed with a touch of laddishness and any foreign fancy dans coming in wouldn't " get it".. if you get my meaning.

I reckon we could get a few Germans in. They like a beverage and a sing song.

On Porktalk, one of them confidently predicted we would finish lower in the Prem than they will in the Championship as though that was an outrageous improbability.
Quite happy with this given their prediction form over the last 2 seasons!

A very good United side got promoted playing good football with a great manager and no money in 1960/61 and shook the then league one to finish 5th,

A very good United seventies side got promoted playing good football with a good manager and no money playing good football and shook the then league one to hold top spot after the first eleven games and finished 10th

This season a different very good United side got promoted with an awesome manager playing good football with money could well shock the Premier League one things for sure we won’t go there and defend
